Great is Thy Faithfulness

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassion's never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 At this halfway point of our final year of Carver Christian High School, it is good to pause and remember the many special moments of God’s truly faithful provision to us as a school and community. God has blessed us with faithful, skilled and Christian staff who daily support and challenge one another towards excellence. It is a joy to see how each staff member has grown professionally and personally. As a community, we have enjoyed the security of this rented location for 13 years: the “Marion Campus” has served us well. In big-picture terms, the leadership of School Board members at all three campuses has provided shared wisdom to guide us into the establishment of two new Christian high schools! There has been consistency in the administrative leadership, enabled through the ongoing close relationship of VCS, JKCS and Carver - a stool with three strong legs. We have watched more than 500 students learning, stretching and developing through Carver, emerging young men and women who contributed to the special culture we enjoy at Carver today. Each of those teenagers blessed our school community with their unique character. We are profoundly blessed by Carver parents who serve here in many capacities - committee work, transportation for athletics, volunteers for many events and speakers sharing their expertise in classrooms. Generous, investing parents and extended community members enable us to purchase items for learning year after year – band, athletic, art equipment, books, technology and much more. Truly, great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto us. Merry Christmas, Carver!

Hey, Honey!

At Britannia Mines, our science class had the opportunity to not only learn about pollution and resource exploitation in a classroom, but also to explore the causes and see the mines themselves. Our guide gave us a brief explanation of earth theories before giving us a detailed orientation of the mines and showing us how some of the old mining devices worked. Our class rode the train in the mine and saw the refinery (which was 20 stories high!) We also learned about the problems that mining copper created in the ecosystem. Copper can be incredibly toxic to certain organisms; therefore, if the amount is not reduced, life ceases to exist around the mine. Our guide explained the technology and processes that scientists and researchers are using to restore the ecosystem, including a water treatment facility. I learned and saw a lot of things that I didn’t expect. All in all, it was a very hands-on experience.

On Wednesday, December 6, the Art 10-12 class visited the Vancouver Art Gallery to see a contemporary Canadian Painting exhibition and learn about current local artwork. A number of Carver alumni are successful, working artists!

As part of the Children’s Literature unit, Carver’s English Honours 11 students recently headed over to the JKCS campus to read stories and facilitate planned activities for their K-3 students. It was a wonderful experience for these seniors to read fun books like Llama Llama Red Pajama, Emma’s Rug and The Gruffalo. The children responded with rapt attention and enthusiastic participation.

Vancouver Christian School K-12 Update

We want to thank all parents and students who attended our Information Night in mid November and appreciate the feedback we received as a result. Every parent comment and question is important to us and we will do our best to answer them in a variety of ways. Some recent updates:

We are now able to walk though a good portion of the school getting a better sense of room locations and space; excitement is building (if you will pardon the pun).

Furniture and equipment planning is well underway. We are committed to ensuring that next year is seen as a transition year for our Grade 8s; our students have had to make

a lot of adjustments over the past two years and we hope for a smooth flow into High School. Our Capital Campaign sits slightly above $3, 850, 000. We would love to hit the $4 million mark by the end of the year. We are looking forward to student input in redesigning the Phoenix, uniform design and sustainability planning. Significant support for bussing is coming from the south and west side of Vancouver; currently, there is not enough interest

to support a pick up area on the more westerly side of Burnaby (ex. Brentwood Mall). High school students living closer to Brentwood and Metrotown can easily take the Skytrain to VCS.

Please stay tuned for more information in upcoming newsletters; our most recent “Hope. And a Future,” is coming out shortly.

We are excited to present the VCS Winter Wish Book! If you are interested in taking a peek, please click on the link below. vancs.org/giftbook
