FROM THE VICARDear Friends,As I write this, the leaves are still falling fromthe trees and the weather is still relativelymild, but by the time you read it, Christmaswill be our main focus, with all the joys andsorrows that go with it.

The time between Christmas and the NewYear is so short that we hardly have time totake stock either of the previous year or whatthe year ahead may hold. What we do know isthat we live in uncertain times; how will ourworld look post Brexit? What will happen inNorth Korea and what indeed will DonaldTrump be up to? How might the ever-presentthreat of terrorism rear its ugly head?

In times of uncertainty and crisis, we naturallywant to hang on tight to the people and thingswhich are precious to us and perhaps becometoo inward looking. We should guard againstthat, because the problems beyond our imme-diate horizon will not go away; there will stillbe people without homes, food, water or anysense of security – and that’s not just abroad, but on our own doorstep too. Sadly, wars willcontinue to rage and innocent people’s livesdestroyed.

Despite what many people may think, moneyand material wealth do not necessarily guaran-tee an easy, calm or peaceful life; fears andtroubles do not miraculously vanish, if wehave money. It is worth considering that wewho have much, could afford to give more tothose who do not, without radically alteringour own lives. Without doubt, small amountsin our eyes can have a huge effect on the livesof others. With this in mind, I draw yourattention to the work of our local charityDENS, which does so much to help those indesperate need in Hemel Hempstead – dohave a look at their website.

So let’s try to keep one eye on the bigger pic-ture, unlike a former British Ambassador toWashington, where, a TV reporter was work-

ing on an assignment called 'The spirit ofChristmas'. He called the British embassy andasked to speak to the ambassador. When hewas put through, the reporter asked,'Ambassador, you have been very cooperativewith our TV station this year; we would liketo include you in a Christmas news item we'regoing to run. Tell me, what would you likefor Christmas?' 'Oh, no,' replied the ambassador, 'I reallymust decline any gift.' 'Oh, please,' said thereporter, 'please tell me what you would espe-cially like for Christmas. Again, theAmbassador refused; but the reporter persist-ed. 'All right then, if you insist, said theAmbassador, ‘this Christmas, I would like asmall box of cigars.’

Forgetting all about the conversation, theAmbassador was very surprised when a weeklater he turned on the evening TV news tohear the reporter introduce a piece on 'Thespirit of Christmas’ ‘We recently interviewedthree ambassadors of the major powers andasked each of them what they would like forChristmas. These diplomats gave revealinganswers; during this season of Christmasgoodwill. The Russian ambassador said that hewould like to see a year of world peace andprosperity for all the world's citizens. TheChinese Ambassador's wish was for an end topoverty in the developing nations. When weasked the British Ambassador, he said he’dlike a box of cigars.'

I wish you all a very happy, joyful and peace-ful Christmas, as you welcome once again thebirth of the Prince of Peace, Our Lord JesusChrist into your hearts and minds and I askyou to pray not only for your loved ones, butthe whole the world.

I leave you with these words from the book ofthe prophet Micah chapter 4:In days to come the mountain of the Lord’shouse shall be established as the highest of themountains, and shall be raised up above thehills.

Peoples shall stream to it, and many nationsshall come and say:‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of theLord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that hemay teach us his way and that we may walkin his paths.’For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, andthe word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shalljudge between many peoples, and shall arbi-trate between strong nations far away; theyshall beat their swords into ploughshares, andtheir spears into pruning-hooks; nation shallnot lift up sword against nation, neither shallthey learn war anymore; but they shall all situnder their own vines and under their own figtrees, and no one shall make them afraid; for

the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken. Forall the peoples walk, each in the name of itsgod, but we will walk in the name of the Lordour God for ever and ever.

I am yours in Christ,

Great Gaddesden Bellringers - Sue Collyer

As the nights draw in and winter approach-es, ringing in the evenings means parking

in the dark, navigating the churchyard intorchlight, climbing the tower steps with thewind whistling round the tower and enteringthe ringing chamber desperately hoping some-one remembered to leave the timer for theheater switched on!

In the past month we have welcomed a lot ofvisitors to the tower. A young lad from

Gaddesden Row was keen to celebrate his 6thbirthday by a visit to the tower. He loves thesound of bells and even at his young age hewas really interested in the bells, the ropes andthe clock workings. He went up to see thebells in the bell chamber and asked some quitechallenging questions! We do love showingpeople what happens in the tower and all aboutthe bells, and it's never too early (or too late)to start to learn - as I can confirm!

Then, on Saturday the 21st October, we had11 ringers from St Martins in Epsom on a

ringing outing. They were followed on theSunday by a couple from Ripon Cathedral inNorth Yorkshire who were in the area and fan-cied a ring, so they swelled our numbers ring-ing for the morning service.

On the 28th October, 22 towers in the localarea opened their doors for an hour each

to hold an Open Day as a fundraising event.Starting at 9.30 in the morning and finishing at6.40 in the evening, visitors from near and farwent from tower to tower ringing in each oneand adding these towers to their accumulatingtotal of towers rung in the UK. We had 42 vis-itors ringing in Great Gaddesden, some ofthem very experienced, others just beginningand including several members of the CountyYouth group. A total of somewhere near £630was raised which will go towards the CountyBell fund which is used for bell restoration, tosupport young ringers and other deservingcauses. One of the visiting ringers who cameto St John the Baptist placed a sound recorder

in the churchyard and recorded our bells as herang them, so he not only has a written recordof all the bells he has rung, but also has arecording of the sound of him ringing them.True dedication!

This month has been a busy one with theDistrict Quiz on the 11th November. We

fielded a team of 6 and managed to share firstprize in an intelligence test, much to ouramazement. A fun time was had by all, and agood sum was raised for the Flamstead StLeonard’s Church restoration fund where thechurch is threatened with closure due to dampand death watch beetle which have affected theroof timbers, and the windows and walls arenot weatherproof. In the last year or so a com-plete new band of ringers has been recruited atFlamstead and they have been taught and sup-ported by experienced ringing teachers fromthe District. They are now just at the point ofbeing able to ring independently as a band andit would be very sad if the church building hasto close because of its poor state of repair inwhich case the bells could no longer be rung.

Finally in our busy month, last week wasour Quarter Peal weekend, where 20

Quarter Peals were attempted throughout theWestern District, involving 47 participatingringers, 10 towers and 13 different methods. AQuarter Peal involves ringing a method contin-uously for about ¾ hour, to a specific compo-sition and pattern which is memorised by eachof the ringers. From our tower Jan and I wereboth successful in our attempts, Jan ringing thetreble to Grandsire Doubles at GreatGaddesden, and I rang inside to mixed doublesof Grandsire and Plain Bob at Aldbury, andcovered behind on the Tenor to StedmanDoubles at Great Gaddesden.

Time for a rest I think…………So from allof us in the Tower we wish you a Happy

Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful NewYear.

It is with regret that the Parish Council notes the sad demise of local residentJim Parks who for many years was very active in maintaining Gaddesden

Jim also played a key role in the creation of the communal orchard andproduction of apple juice each autumn.

As we head towards the end of term, itseems that activity within the school isspeeding up rather than slowing down asthere is so much happening! The childrenare loving their new playground equip-ment in our revamped Bark Area thanksto the hard work of FOGGS and fundsraised from the School Community.

Children in Year Six took part in a penal-ty shoot-out at a recent Watford game atVicarage Road and had a chance to watchthe match, a fabulous experience - espe-cially for some of our football-madpupils! With this year’s focus on the arts andwriting, we have been finding opportuni-ties for our pupils to experience amazingexperiences to complement their learning. This month, years Three and Four took atrip to see “Awful Auntie” in MiltonKeynes and had a thoroughly lovely timeseeing the story written by DavidWalliams come to life.

As part of their Natural Disasters Topic,Years Five and Six got to visit Sky Studiosin London… more on that later.

This month the school also had a fire!!However, luckily it was a controlled, thoroughly risk assessed, re-enactment ofthe Great Fire of London which tookplace on the playground. Led by olderchildren, the younger children witnessed acardboard town being set alight todemonstrate how easy it was for the greatfire to spread. As well as their practicalwork, older pupils also learnt more andwrote about the Great Fire of London.

At the end of November we held“Writing Week” with a focus on different

aspects of writing. Here is Miss Ayres, subject leader for Literacy, sharing moreabout writing week: “The 20th – 24th November was WritingWeek at Great Gaddesden and all theclasses went off-timetable to engage in arange of exciting activities to inspire writ-ing.

Years 5 and 6 were focusing on naturaldisasters and they began the week with anexciting trip to Sky Studios. Childrenlearnt new skills in reporting, producing, directing and operating cameras andworked together to create a news reporton natural disasters. Maxwell, Year 5,said, "It was fun and I learnt how to usenew pieces of technology." Grace, Year 5,said, "It was really good because they letyou come up with your own ideas."

Years 3 and 4 focused on the Romansduring writing week. They wrote newspa-per reports, created a moving book andre-enacted the story of Boudica!

Years 1 and 2 began their space-themedweek by dressing as astronauts, aliens andeven a solar system! They were engagingin lots of space-related activities includingcreating and writing about their ownplanets and writing letters from space.

Nursery and Reception began their'super' week by dressing as superheroes. They wrote about their superpowers andengaged in lots of rescue missions!Throughout the week they were makingpower-boosting potions, answering callsfor help and creating exciting storiesabout superheroes!

Gaddesden Estate NewsGaddesden Estate NewsFarmAll the autumn work on the Home Farm hasnow been completed. We have two areas leftfor spring cropping, the area aroundGlennisters field overlooking Gade Valleyand the Highbush/Farthings block overlook-ing the “Red Lion”. We have not yet made adecision about what to plant. The SpringOats did well for us in the 2017 harvest sosome of the area will probably go down tooats.

Brexit and farmingAgriculture will be dramatically affected bywithdrawal from the Common AgriculturalPolicy, the “CAP”. As yet we do not knowwhat new policies will come into force toreplace those from Europe, nor exactly whenthey will be implemented, though our ownlong-term goals already include continuallyseeking ways to improve efficiency in theproduction, while prioritising long-term sus-tainability. Among other things, this meansexperimenting with techniques such as no-till, a low-impact sowing method which bothreduces diesel consumption and helps pre-serve soil health. The last change as momen-tous as this, apart from our entry into thethen Common Market, was the AgricultureAct 1947, and while it might present someexciting and much-needed changes, we musthope that the UK industry remains healthyenough to maintain its position as a globalleader in terms of quality of produce togeth-er with environmental stewardship. In aworst-case scenario, if the UK cannot feeditself, then we are not only at the mercy ofexternal market forces, which will dictateprices, but we lose control over how ourfood is produced.

WoodlandsA few years ago we had strong winds in thewinter following some thinning of a 1970

plantation, Compartment 7k in Big Wood.About 1.5 acres was damaged with sometrees being completely blown over and somesnapped off at about 8 feet. Thanks to PeterHall and his machinery we have been able toclear the site of broken tree trunks andstumps and plan in early spring to re-plant.This is not classified as “Ancient Woodland”as it was farmland until the early 19thCentury. We are planning to experimentwith a number of species, predominantlyconifers which are recommended as beingresilient to climate change. The mixture willcertainly include Douglas Fir with probablysome Coast Redwood, Western Hemlockand Western Red Cedar.

Internet and websiteOver the past few months we have beenbusy in the Estate Office upgrading our IT,which involves not only improving ouroperating system and email but also com-pletely rewriting our website, commissioningnew photographs, and making it tablet andtelephone compatible. All being well wehope to go live in the new year (www.gad-desdenestate.co.uk).

EventsWe have had a few small events this year, themost recent being an autumn foraging day,run by a firm called “Woodland Ways”. Wehosted two days this year, one in spring andone in autumn, and both proved very popu-lar, with participants being introduced toedible (and poisonous!) plants and fungi. They are shown how to make a camp fireand then cook what they have foraged. Datesfor 2018 will be announced on Facebook indue course. The Cloth of Gold Archery club continue tohold their field archery events in StableWood

Filming Many will have noticed the high-vis filmdirection signs around the parish whichsprout up from time to time. They showthat we have had a busy season with vari-ous aspects of the film industry.Gaddesden Place has been a popular loca-tion since the 1960s. In recent years theUnit Base for films there has been based onthe estate, usually in the Home Farm yard.Filming around the estate has taken placeas well, including “The Child in Time”with Benedict Cumberbatch. Two majorproductions are going out on the BBC andAmazon next year.

Kath GraysonWe sadly have to report that Kath Graysonof Mill Hill Farm passed away in lateSeptember. Kath was Irish and had livedwith her late husband, Mike, at Mill Hillfor 30 years or so, from where they ran the“Loch Creran” Clydesdale working horses. They participated with great success inmany shows, including the Royal Showand the Dacorum Steam Fair, horse drawnploughing competitions and in conjunctionwith Nick Sutton used these great horsesfor forestry work.

Residential PropertyWe continue the regular round of repairsand maintenance and have welcomed sev-eral new families to live on the estate overthe past few months.

Commercial PropertySince I last reported new businesses joiningthe estate have included Tandem Creative,a TV Film and Video production company,Shire Homecare Services and DesignCorse, a specialised motor cycle parts busi-ness.

Estate RideChantal McDouall has joined us to helpwith our various horse enterprises, the liv-ery yard, grazing paddocks Gaddesdenestate Ride and “Park and Rides”.The Ride itself goes from strength tostrength. Lots of people, horses and poniestook part in the monthly Park and RideEvents, in association with the BritishHorse Society, as well as becoming regularmembers of the ride. The Charity Ride inSeptember raised £2,000 for the GaddesdenPlace Riding for the Disabled Association, and £500 for the BHS. The RDA held theirown ride the same day for which BruceClaridge raised another £2,000.
