England is one of the countries of the United Kingdom, and has a separate identity from Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

Great Britain is the island consisting of England, Scotland and Wales.

The United Kingdom is the political entity consisting of England, Scotland and Wales, plus Northern Ireland

The most famous place of England is Stratford-upon-Avon. It is a small town in

the centre of England. The town was founded about 800 years ago. Stratford-

upon-Avon has become famous as the birth place of William Shakespeare. He died there on his birthday in 1616 and was buried in the church of Stratford-upon-Avon. Stratford-upon-Avon also

attracts people from all over the world by its Royal Shakespeare Theatre –

“Globe Theater”. In this theatre only Shakespeare's plays are performed.

Westminster Abbey is a historical building and a

holy place. It was founded in 1050 as a monastery. Then it

was rebuilt. Almost every English king has been crowned in this

place and buried in the church since 1308.

Westminster CathedralIt was built between

1895 and 1903.This is the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop and the leading Roman Catholic Church in England. Its bell tower is 84 metres high.

Parliament House is known around the world

as a business card in London. This is the

famous Big Ben with antique clock and a huge

bell.

St. Paul’s CathedralSt.Paul’s Cathedral is a

famous building too.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana married here in 1981.

Over the dark waters of the Thames stretched famous Tower Bridge, recognizable throughout the world.Tower Bridge

is a bascule-bridge. The bascules will open to let ships pass through.

The River Thames is 338 km long.

British Museum - the main historical and archaeological museum of the UK and one of the largest museums in the world. The museum was founded in 1753.

Hyde Park is quite popular both among the inhabitants of London, and among the curious tourists.

Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the British monarch (Queen Elizabeth II). It was built in 1703. There is a great collection of paintings.

Located across the street of Pall Mall and Green Park to the white marble with gilded monument to Queen Victoria. When the king is in the palace, on the roof of the palace flies the Royal Standard. Standard - a special kind of banner flag.
