From Katherine
From Jenny Looking forward to another year of wonderful reads. I have just started reading ‘Crossing To Safety’ by Wallace Stegner and I’m so excited, I just know I’m going to love this book with its beautiful gentle writing. I found this treasure after watching some older ABC Tuesday Book Club shows. Some other recommendations from this show I hope to read this year are: ‘We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves’ by Karen Joy Fowler, and ‘Dinner at the Homesick
Restaurant’ by Anne Tyler.

From Katherine
I have read ‘Serena’ by Ron Rash and ‘Still Alice’ by Lisa Genova recently. These two novels are totally different in style and content but both are equally engrossing.
‘Still Alice’ is the story of a Linguistics Professor who is diagnosed with early onset dementia. Beautifully written and terrifying at the same time. Alice and her family come to the realisation that human worth cannot be measured in terms of achievement and academic accolades but instead by the intrinsic nature of the person. Unforgettable and poignant, will appeal to people who loved ‘A Beautiful Mind’.
‘Serena’ is a New York Times bestseller and PEN/Faulkner finalist. Ron Rash has written a compelling story of greed, corruption and violence, revenge and obsessive love. Set in the early 1900’s in the American Wilderness, it charts the history of the timber felling industry and the destruction of the forests of North Carolina. Serena is a compelling central character both fascinating and morally repellent. If you like Cormac McCarthy’s novels and the powerful narrative style of John Steinbeck, you will love this.
