Our products are built to last.

Dear Customer,

Welcome to the Glass Reinforced Concrete Product Guide.

Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) is a composite of sand, cement and glass fibre reinforcement. The glass fibres reinforce the concrete, much as steel reinforcing does in conventional concrete. GRC is a durable and lightweight alternative, in some cases weighing only 20% of a comparative product. As most products are designed to be lifted by one or two people, installation is easier and achievable in hard to reach locations, including those inaccessible by machinery. As GRC products are manufactured without steel reinforcement, it is also ideal for installation in areas normally prone to corrosion.

GRC pit systems are most suitable for use as stormwater, communications and electrical pits. They are commonly used in areas such as inter-allotment, basements of existing buildings, gardens, landscaped or light vehicle areas. The products have been rated to load classification B, typically used in light duty suburban roads, footpaths or walkways.

As an Australian owned and operated business, with a manufacturing network across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, our commitment to customer satisfaction is as long lasting as our products. Contact your local Civilmart Specialist today to discuss the benefits of GRC. They’ll guide you through the range, product applications, installation and delivery.

J-Bolt for Lock-down Requirements1. Mark and drill a 12mm hole 95mm down from the edge of the rebate2. Bolt the bracket as shown3. Pull the J-Bolt up and over the load bar to lock down the grate

Installation Notes

GRC Pit Installation Procedure1. During installation of GRC components, appropriate safety wear must be worn e.g. gloves, protective glasses, hearing protection, dust

mask.

2. Prior to placement of the pit, determine and set-out the exact position of the inlet and outlet services and mark out on the external surface of the GRC pit walls. Take care to ensure the pit is installed in accordance with the design levels and details provided on the project drawings.

3. Neatly excavate the foundation material to suit the external dimensions of the GRC pit and risers. Ensure the excavation is slightly deeper to allow for bedding material to be placed under the pit base. It is essential that the base of the pit is founded on bedding material with adequate bearing strength to prevent settlement or deflection of the pit during service.

4. Before placing the pit, ensure you have completed the appropriate penetrations in the pit walls for the services required. (Please refer to the GRC Pit Penetration Procedure for creating penetrations into GRC pits).

5. After placing the bedding material, lower the pit into position ensuring the correct alignment of the service penetrations.

6. Complete all service connections to the pit and ensure services are secured and the penetrations rendered using a suitable mortar to provide a water tight joint.

7. Backfill evenly around all sides of the pit to a level of 200mm above the pit base.

8. Fit the extension risers and seal the riser joints using a suitable mortar.

9. Complete the backfill evenly around all sides of the pit and risers up to ground level using compacted granular material.

10. Place the Civilmart grate or cover into the rebate to complete the installation.

11www.civilmart.com.au

Pipe Entry Installation

GRC Pit Penetration ProcedureMark the outline of the penetration on the outside of the wall of the GRC pit.Penetrations can be formed in GRC pits by several methods:

Ball Pein HammerUsing the ball peen end of the hammer, locate the centre of the penetration and start tapping until the material disintegrates and a small hole is made. Keep “tapping” around the hole until it opens up to match the outline of the penetration required. (CivilMart do not recommend this method when making multiple pipe entries into a single pit)

Hammer & Pointed Masonry ChiselUse the pointed chisel and hammer to start the initial hole and then proceed as above using the hammer to open out the hole to the required size. Tidy up using a 1/2 round file.

Drill & Masonry bitUsing a drill and 5-10mm masonry bit drill a series of holes approx. 50mm apart around the marked-out circumference of the required penetration. Knock out the unwanted material with a ball peen hammer and tidy up edges if required using a 1/2 round file.

Cutting MethodUsing either an Angle Grinder with masonry cutting disk or a hammer drill with a masonry hole saw , cut out the penetration as required, removing as little material as possible to reduce the amount of epoxy mortar required to seal the pipe in place. (If using an angle grinder consider making a hexagonal or octagonal cut).

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS1. Ensure appropriate PPE is used when

carrying out the above tasks, including Safety Glasses, Gloves and Hearing protection.

2. Drilling and cutting techniques will also require appropriate dust masks and methods to reduce the creation of dust.

3. Installers need to consider the manual handling methods to be used, whilst GRC is lightweight, handling may require mechanical assistance.
