THE CITY #THECITY#

The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritagesite, but Graz, Austria’s second largest cityand capital of the Styria region, is nomuseum piece. Innovative modernarchitecture slips seamlessly into itsmedieval fabric. The extra-terrestrial-likeKunsthaus, and the shell-shaped Island inthe Mur, both opened to celebrate Graz’syear as European Capital of Culture in2003, reflect this university city’sforward-looking attitude.

Narrow passageways lead to arcaded innercourtyards – there are around 50 of them.A spectacular one, the Generalihof, hostsopen air jazz concerts. While Graz is billedas Austria’s jazz capital, it’s famed too forits opera, theatre and festivals.

Traditional coffee houses are still the placeto relax, write postcards and read thepaper. Don’t miss the splendid ImperialCourt Bakery, Edegger-Tax on Hofgasse, with its magnificent wood-carved exteriorthat’s crowned by a double-headed eagle.

Meet locals at the two daily farmers’markets, take a riverside walk, explore thewooded slopes of the Schlossberg, and bea culture-vulture in the countlessmuseums. Graz is a great place formeandering, eating well at traditional innsand stylish modern restaurants – and forshopping, from the individuality ofboutiques to Austria’s biggest departmentstore.
