DESCRIPTION
Among the pinsapos woods, a species of prehistoric fir tree that can only be found in this area, near the Sierra del Pinar –the highest point in the province of Cádiz (1653 metres) and surrounded by valuable scenery of great ecological value, including the banks of the river Gaidovar, Grazalema has the distinction of being the rainiest town in the whole peninsula, which contributes to the beauty and wealth of its natural surroundings.

Grazalema Grazalema
The municipality of Grazalema isdivided into three areas,Grazalema in the centre, the villageof Benamahoma and the Gaidovarriverside. The municipality ofGrazalema conserves its narrowstreets filled with the flavour of theSierra de Cadiz. This attractive mu-nicipality and its villages are a cle-ar example of how to take advanta-ge of its own natural and culturalresources in favour of environmen-tally friendly tourism, whilst main-taining its traditional charm.
Among the pinsapos woods, a spe-cies of prehistoric fir tree that canonly be found in this area, near theSierra del Pinar –the highest pointin the province of Cádiz (1653 me-tres) and surrounded by valuablescenery of great ecological value, including the banks of the riverGaidovar, Grazalema has the dis-tinction of being the rainiest townin the whole peninsula, which con-tributes to the beauty and wealth ofits natural surroundings. It is ofArab origins - its name comes fromthe words Gran Zulema- but is lo-cated on towns once populated bythe Romans. This town was recon-quered from the Muslims by theDuke of Arcos in 1485. It wentthrough its period of most rapideconomic growth in the 17th cen-tury, thanks to the textile industryand especially the production ofthe famous Grazalema blankets. The Museum of Textile Handcraftsin the city shows examples of thedifferent equipment and materials
used, together with samples of thegarments made.
Nowadays, Grazalema’s hand-crafts continue to be highly pri-zed, and you can buy baskets, es-parto grass items and of courseblankets, scarves and jacketshand woven using very high qua-lity sheep's wool. Also sought af-ter and available in any shop areproducts made in the traditionalway, such as goat's cheese, ho-ney and prepared meats.
Grazalema soup, golden thistleand asparagus omelette, game, rabbit, asparagus soup, roast lambor confectionary such as sugar andalmond marzipan (amarguillos),
blackberry gateaux (cubiletes), ci-der pasties, acorn pie orBenamahoma bread make up thecuisine of this village in the Sierrade Cádiz.
The architectural heritage of theareas dependent on the maincentre is extremely interesting, such as: the Parroquial Church ofSan Antonio de Padua inBenamahoma, the bull ring in thesame village and the Chapel of
Nuestra Señora del Rosario onthe River Gaidovar.
Situated on the Route of the WhiteVillages, Grazalema guards withinits walls an interesting architecturaland artistic heritage, made up ofauthentic architectural treasures. The Nuestra Sra. de La Aurorachurch, built in the 18th centurywith an octagonal base and a cylin-drical dome, the San José church, the old Carmelite Convent from the17th century, whose dome still haspaintings done by a disciple ofMurillo, the San Juan church, builtin the 18th century on the site of anancient mosque, or the Ntra. Sra. deLa Encarnación Parish Church, whe-re you will find a host of valuable ar-tistic sculptures.
It is worth visiting the ruins ofLacilbula, a 2nd century Roman vi-lla where you can still see the re-mains of roads and towers, and thevillage of Benamahoma, which isoutstanding for its beautiful, per-fectly preserved streets, fast-flo-wing El Nacimiento spring and theMoors and Christians festivals ce-lebrated there in honour of SanAntonio de Padua during the firstweekend in August. There are manyroutes and itineraries available fordiscovering all the splendours ofthe Sierra de Grazalema NaturePark, a UNESCO BiosphereReserve housing a large number ofanimal and plant species. LaGarganta Verde, la Presa delFresnillo, El Pinsapar, the riverMajaceite forest, the Republicanoand Líbar plains are some of themost important spots in the parkfor participating in activities likehiking, horse riding, climbing, po-tholing, canoeingland paragliding.

The official protection given to Grazalema and its district, Benamahoma, havemeant that during recent decades they have become exceptionally good spotsfor enjoying the countryside festivals that take place during the year, as well asreligious traditions popular in the south of Andalusia and other historical cus-toms and rites. The pilgrimages are worth seeing and include San IsidroLabrador in the unique Ribera del Gaidovar, San Antonio, in Benamahoma andthe procession of the Virgen de los Ángeles to the Hermitage in Grazalema. InBenamahoma the Moors and Christians fiestas are a vital part of the towns he-ritage. Grazalema and Benamahoma continue celebrating the festive bull-run-ning ritual - the Toro de Cuerda - held on Easter Sunday in Benamahoma andduring the Festival of El Carmen in July in Grazalema.
Vestiges of the oldest cultures to inhabit this place can be viewed in privilegedplaces such as the megalithic Dolmen of the Giganta, the Roman villa ofLacílbula and the Calzada Road that crosses la Manga. This aside, the urbancentre of Grazalema is ideal for appreciating the historical and social develop-ment of a mountain town. The rural habitat is intact and adapted to the inten-se rain and mountainous terrain, added to a series of noble houses in perfectcondition that speak to us of the economic splendour enjoyed by this place du-ring the 18th century, when the textile business led to this town being knownas "Cádiz chico" or "Little Cádiz". From the same period there is a sizeablegroup of religious buildings of great value: churches and hermitages conser-ved or rebuilt with great care. Interest in the rich heritage of the area makes avisit to the Water Eco-Museum and the Headquarters of the Moors andChristians Cultural Association in Benamahoma a must.
Grazalema is located in the centre of the Sierra de Grazalema naturepark that gives it its name, and the natural environment is a para-digm of the wealth and possibilities for environmental tourism offe-red by the Sierra de Cádiz. The Nature Park, declared a BiophereReser ve by UNESCO, evidence of the great environmental value of itspinsapos, prehistoric fir trees kept alive by the natural conditions ofthis place. The numerous mountains surrounding this place(Endrinal, Zafalgar, Castillo, Líbar, Ubrique and Pinar) are the hig-hest in the province and boast splendid gorges, gullies and depres-sions. In this varied landscape you can do hiking, climbing, potho-ling, canoeing, paragliding as well as enjoy other sporting activities.
Grazalema has been painstakingly careful with its ethnographical
heritage over recent decades, meaning it is a wonderful place for
tasting the most traditional, representative cuisine of the Sierra de
Cádiz. Its cheeses are famous, as are its basic traditionally preserved
pork products and sausages, large and small game of the highest
quality and wild vegetables such as asparagus and thistles. These
ingredients are used to make so many high-quality recipes that it is
hard to choose: sopas tostadas, lamb or venison, roasted or in sauce,
almond balls, larded cakes and pasties.
