For 2013 Grays launch our new range of sticks encouraged, that once again our sticks were the leading choice of theinternational players that took part in the recent London Olympics. These players joined in a longstanding tradition of topplayers seen using our easily recognizable orange flash symbol during the games, which has contributed to us now beingable to formally register the symbol as being special to the Grays brand.

We have raised the bar even higher and have really focused on improving several technical aspects of the stickperformance. These improvements include the introduction of new cutting edge Tri – Tec composite fibres to the range,extending the range of rear blade profiles as well as now offering an unrivalled choice of new skill enhancing headshapes.We have also increased the range of our energy absorbing handle constructions.

Grays Stick Technology

Leading the way where it matters most ... in the hands of playersGrays continue to invest in our research programme into both the playing characteristics of our composite and wooden sticks. This involves both laboratoryand field testing of all our sticks to assess their playing characteristics. Grays have developed extensive expertise and technical data thus enabling us tocreate our range of composite and wooden sticks. This year we are introducing the latest Tri-Tec carbon fibre weave.

The research programmeGrays research laboratory testing programme was done in conjunction with one of England's foremost universities. By using players of both internationaland club level we also conduct hitting tests using each model within our collection of sticks.

Reinforcement levelsThe research process involved hitting balls with each of our sticks whilst being filmed using special high speed cameras that had also been used extensivelyin ball speed tests. By filming each hit using 400 frames per second each individual swing speed and impact ball deflection speed was accurately measuredand from this data the stick’s rigidity was established. By drawing together the data of the tests, Grays have been able to accurately assess the matrixformulae required in our composites and our wooden stick models.

The ‘Feel’ factorThis part of the testing is conducted in the laboratory in a controlled environment to establish the feel factor of receiving skills. This involved firing a hockeyball at each model of stick to establish how much rebound occurs when the ball makes its initial contact with the stick head. This process is an accuratesimulation of ball receiving skills.

The Grays Energy ReductionHandle is designed to reduce theimpact energy transmitted from thehead of the stick through the blade andhands wrists and forearms. The thermo rubbersleeve around the handle helps to improve the playerscontrol and feel when both hitting and receiving, leading toimproving a players first touch on the ball.

IMPROVED FEEL AREAThe IFA absorbs the initial ball contact with thesurface of the stick head and provides a softerfeel. Our special combination of shockabsorbing aramid and fibreglass fibresimproves first touch control and creates abetter feel. The textured finish helps givemore grip and control of the ball, particularlyon water based surfaces.

“TRI-TEC”THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FROM GRAYS

Tri-Tec is the latest development in carbon fibre technology from Grays and takes hockey stick technology to a new level.

The new Tri-Tec tri-axial carbon fibre weave increases the carbon fibre consistency that helps generate improved performance - particularly in the energy transfer qualities when hitting the ball. The new three directional layering process also improves the energy absorption qualities of the sticks performance in that it improves the sticks’ handle and feel as each inter-connected carbon fibre strand is more efficient and consistent than uni - directional carbon fibre weaves.

JUMBOW...The "Jumbow" blade profile is the ultimate shape and design with the curve positioned down the blade to help generate "drag flick" momentum. MID-BOW...New for 2013 the new "Mid-Bow" blade profile shape has been repositioned more in the mid section of the blade at 30cmfrom the base of the head. The curve height is 24.75mm. The uniform bow is shaped and contoured continuously alongthe handle to the head and is especially contoured to improve the angle at which the stick head comes into contactwith the ball - it will help give players the technical edge in performing today's 3D hockey skills. Easily identifiable byits own unique new graphical design, the Mid - Bow blade profile continues to become increasingly popularamongst a new generation of players who have learned their skills exclusively on synthetic pitches.

NANO CARBON TUBE TECHNOLOGY

Carbon Nano Tubes are molecular scale graphitic tubes that are amongst thestrongest of known fibres. We have now included “Carbon Nano Tubes” aspart of our resin mixture formulae. This process has involved carefully addingthese nano molecule particles into the resin mix as part of the all important layup process. The Grays formulae is so important in creating the all importantstick performance qualities of increased strength and feel.

When integrated within the formulae mix of the resin, these minute sizedCarbon NanoTubes allowgreaterimpregnation ofthe resin into thesurface of thereinforcing fibresthemselves,resulting ingreater tensilestrength in thebond of the resinitself on thesurface of thereinforcing fibres.

It is the combination and integration of the use of these Carbon Nano Tubeswithin the resin mix combined with our Grays special composite fibre matrix

constructions on these Nano models that increases the energy transferqualities of the nano sticks performance.

For 2013 we have updated the Dynabowmodels with a new updated pinstripedesign look.The Dynabow blade profile shape has a precise curve positioned mid - lower blade to give players thecombination for high level technical skills, excellent energy transfer when hitting and good responsewhen using drag flick techniques.

With the blade curve point positioned at 250 mm between the new Mid -Bow and Jumbow bladeprofile shapes, it has been introduced at the request of our top international players, who werelooking for that little extra control and stick handling. For 2013 Grays have re-launched the latest cutting edge GT Turbo range.The new rear spine profile has been increased to two parallel beamspositioned down the rear spine of the blade increasing both the stickscore stability and energy transfer when hitting. The sectional powerveinsare positioned diagonally down the rear of the blade to give even greaterstability against the torsional stresses. This powerful combination createsgreat hitting sticks with exceptional feel.

Our hockey stick research programme has revealed that all sticksexperience some rotational flex forces when hitting the hockey ball. Theserotational forces are referred to as "Torque". Very simply torque flex isresponsible for the loss of energy transfer through the impact zone.

Grays “twin beam technology“ combines three important componentfeatures set out to give the model greater performance.

1. The Twin beam technology down the rear of blade profile gives central "core stability" to the rear of the stick and improves energy transfer.

2. The two-directional powerveins structure creates improved stability along the back of the blade of the stick and works against these rotational flex forces.

3. The special composite fibre matrix construction on these models have been realigned to take these forces into consideration.

Junior Stick Height Guide...Selecting the right length of stick is vitally important if all the skills of hockeyare to be developed and performed well. In general, your height determineswhat length of stick you should use. However there are some benefits inselecting the longest stick that you can control. The more skillful player maywant the benefits of extra reach and better vision that longer sticks can offer.

The main points are:• Does the stick feel comfortable?

• Is it pressing into my tummy or am I having to bend too low and damage myback?

• Can my hands control the head of the stick when I swing to hit the ball or is thehead of the stick dominating my hands?

One method to find the correct length of stick is to stand up straight, place thehead of the stick under your armpit and find a stick that reaches to the bottom ofyour kneecap.
