Dear Friends,
What a wonderful anniversary year 2016 was! We honored the remarkable accomplishments of the Abby’s House community over the past 40 years, while also moving forward together into the future.
On the pages of this report, you will read about significant milestones over 40 years and about six individuals and families that we honored for their longtime contributions to our mission.
You will also read about important milestones in 2016, including the expansion of our advocacy team and our plans to renovate and sustain 54 units of supportive housing at 52 High Street. Through these efforts, we have positioned ourselves to better serve the women and children in our community, both now and in the future.
After 40 years, the journey still continues, one day at a time. There is work still to be done to meet the needs of women who come through our doors, and we hope you will continue to move forward together with us.
Thank you for all your contributions over the past year - or the past 40 years - to help women and children at Abby’s House. You have made a difference.
Dear Friends of Abby’s House,
My neighbor, Connor McNamara, when a 6th grade student at Midland St. School was asked to write an original poem, acrostic-style. This was the result:
Abby’s House
A place for women and children Beds, food and help Believe in a better day You are strong Stay for a while Hospitality every day Open doors to everyone Understanding workers Safety from abuse Extraordinary place
The teacher remarked on his paper: “Well done.” I, on the other hand, was astounded by the depth of his understanding of Abby’s mission. What a remarkable, succinct description of our history – a
glorious past of shaping something meaningful for then, for now, and for the future. It highlighted not only the lasting values of our organization, but the dedication of the staff and the inner strength of those who come and will continue to come through our doors. The poem tells all of us why we exist – to be the comfort, the decent place for those seeking shelter, housing, and advocacy and much needed resources.
May Abby’s continue to be “extraordinary” in every way as we move into an exciting future of growth and expansion!
Thanks to all.
Sincerely,
Stephanie and Annette at the Holiday Bazaar
Connor and Annette

Moving Forward TogetherTo everyone who supported us last year and through the years, thank you! You have kept the doors open for
women and children in need in our community, ensuring they have a place to call home and the support they need to regroup and get back on their feet.
It was through the sheer determination of compassionate and concerned individuals that Abby’s House came to be forty years ago. And each year since, the Abby’s House community has expanded. We are grateful to
everyone who has given of their time, made a donation, and shared our mission with others. It is that continuous support that has sustained us and allowed us to grow and begin the next chapter in our history.
Opening Doors, Transforming Lives.Building for the Future of Abby’s House
You, our family of supporters, are among the first to hear details about the exciting plans to preserve our essential housing at 52 High Street long into the future. We plan to make a formal, public announcement of our capital campaign to support this project later in the year.
The Opening Doors, Transforming Lives Campaign enables us to add one unit to expand to 55 Single Room Occupancy units and addresses these capital needs:
• Update all of the major systems including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, life safety, and security systems. • Reconfigure and enhance building entrance (seen above) as well as install an elevator allowing full
accessibility to all areas of the building for elderly and handicapped residents.• Add accessible resident kitchens and laundry rooms on each floor of the building.
Renovations to the building also allows for new programmatic opportunities as well as providing a more effective social support system to a wider demographic of women.
The total cost of the project is $14,263,149 of which we are raising $2,000,000 from a capital campaign comprised of corporate, foundation, and individual gifts. We are so proud to report that 100% of our Board has pledged over $100,000 and all together we raised $747,600 by December 31, 2016.
You will be hearing more from us about this critically important project moving forward; however, please feel free to reach out to Justina Lachapelle, Director of Development, at 508-756-5486 Ext. 14
if you’d like to discuss your involvement and investment now.

Helping Women and Children Find a Place to Call Home for 40 Years
1973-1974 1975
1976 1986
Annette Rafferty leads a task force to study the need for a shelter for homeless women with or without children in Worcester.
A collective of concerned citizens forms and takes up the task of creating a safe place for women and their children.
Some of the Women From the Founding Collective
A 9 bed overnight shelter is opened at 23 Crown Street and is named Abby’s House after Abby Kelley Foster, Worcester’s most famous abolitionist and women’s rights activist. Abby’s House is formed!
What is now known as the Women’s Center is formed.
21-23 Crown St. - Shelter
Tess Sneesby Welcomes A Shelter Guest
Since 1976, you have answered the call for help. You saw the need for a safe place for homeless women and children, and you stepped up, volunteering to raise money, furnish the shelter, cook meals, do the laundry, and staff the shelter.
When more women began arriving on our doorstep, it became clear that more affordable housing was the solution to homelessness. Again, you came to our aid, and with your support, we opened 3 more houses, providing 77 units of affordable supportive housing.

Our SupportersAt our 40th Anniversary Celebration on November 4th, we honored six individuals and families for their
significant contributions and support for our mission over the last 40 years. They are an inspiration to us all.
The Stephen S. Foster Award was presented in memory of three business leaders - Bob Shepherd, Ben Masterman, and Dan Harrington - and in honor of their families’ commitment to Abby’s House.
Ben Masterman – Masterman FamilyMasterman’s
Daniel Harrington – Harrington FamilySunnyside Ford
Robert Shepherd – Shepherd FamilyShepherd Engineering, Inc.
Ben Masterman always made sure that Abby’s need for supplies was met. He would also often call and inquire if there
was anything he could supply to make life more comfortable for our shelter guests and residents.
He embraced our mission; he knew what it meant for thousands of women and their children to have a safe place, and today his
legacy of giving continues with the Masterman family.Tod and Linda Masterman
Without fail, Daniel Harrington would always contribute a brand new Sunnyside Ford to anyone lucky enough to make a hole-in-one at the many Abby’s House golf tournaments!
Then, Abby’s became a family affair, with his wife, daughters, and daughter-in-law giving 40 years of volunteer service in the women’s center, on the Board of Directors, in the Thrift
Shop, and in generous gifts to support the mission of Abby’s.Daniel J. Harrington III, Ann Harrington, Mary Ann McGrain, and Susan DiNoia
For nearly 40 years, Shepherd Engineering, Inc. has been a generous donor to Abby’s House.
Through the continued generosity characteristic of Bob, his wife, Ellen, a longtime shelter volunteer, and their daughter,
Mary Fritz, herself a supporter of Abby’s, Shepherd Engineering, Inc. is donating the electrical engineering services
needed during the renovation of 52 High Street. John Shepherd, Mary Fritz, and Ellen Shepherd

Our WomenAt Abby’s House, Daisy Found Herself Again
Daisy is a survivor of domestic violence. Forced to leave her job and flee her home to escape her husband’s abuse, Daisy came to Abby’s broken and with little hope.
An accomplished artist, her husband had also destroyed her paintings and her will to paint.
Then, she found Abby’s, and everything changed. At Abby’s, she found hope and support. As Daisy describes, “Abby’s became my village. ”
Given a safe place, she was able to work while looking for affordable housing. She began to paint again and found a new job and an apartment of her own. She found herself again.
“I felt like everyone here was looking at me for me,” Daisy says, “I got me back. I got treated like a person. I was Daisy.”
At our 40th Anniversary Celebration on November 4th, we honored Daisy with the Liberty Farm Award, which is given to a woman who has demonstrated extraordinary strength and courage to survive and thrive.
For us, Daisy symbolizes the struggle and recovery of all of the more than 13,000 women who have come through one of our four doors during these 40 years, and has left with dignity and confidence restored.

Sketch of the new entrance!
