The real star of the Masters will be Mother Nature with her aza- leas, rhododendron and dogwood lining the course in full splen- dor. Every green and fairway beautifully carved from the Georgian hill country designed to add color and texture to a stunning backdrop. If you’ve never watched the Masters, it’s worth seeing just for its beauty. Plant a little piece of the Masters in your backyard using aza- leas. Spring owering, azaleas are shade loving plants that will do well in many Kan- sas City landscapes. Best as foundation plantings on the north or east side of your home or under any shade canopy. Uncle’s Masterpiece Azaleas that perform the best include Fuch- sia, Rose and Moth- er’s Day. These com- pact evergreen aza- leas will reach a mature height of 3-4 feet under ideal conditions. Hino- Crimson is a smaller bright red variety that is always popular. Purple Spectacular ReBloom™ azaleas have been popular in just the last few years. Single purple owers are blooming in spring, with sporadic summer owers and then a mass reblooming in early fall. Treat them right: Just like Uncle, azaleas and rhododendrons are acid soil lovers. Amend your soil with a combination of Uncle’s Pro- fessional Max Mix organic blend for drainage and peat compost for acid content. Mulch with pine bark mulch, a naturally acidic mulch. Fertilize established aza- leas with Milorganite to give them the iron they need. Keep a soil test kit handy to check your soil ph. With a little extra effort up front, you can bring color and class to your shady spot. MASTERPIECE AZALEAS April showers bring dandelion owers. April also brings henbit, chickweed, clover and an occasional thistle with their bright white, yellow and purple ow- ers. Wherever there was a winter barespot, now there is a Spring weed surprise. No mat- ter how good your lawn looked last fall. It now looks like the salad bar at Price Chopper. These winter broa- dleaf weeds are not controlled by Step #1 Prevent. In early April when nights and soils are cold and the weeds are small, liquid weed killers such as Speed Zone or Trimec will work the best. Uncle says make sure to use Uncle’s Stikit Spread- er Sticker to help the spray stick to the small waxy leaves and use the stronger mixing for- mula. Also, be patient. At cold soil tempera- tures these plants die more slowly, and you may need a second application after seven to ten days. Once warm weather and warm nightime soils become the norm, a traditional Step #2 Loveland Weed and Feed gives a good weed kill and helps ll in bare spots. Granular weed killers work their best on large leafed weeds. If you apply Loveland Weed & Feed when the lawn is damp with a morning or evening dew, your dandelions will be curl- ing the next day. Damp leaf, warm night and no rain for 24 hours and Dandy Dandelion will curl up and die. DANDY DANDELION WOW! Where did they all come from? Spring lawns have started to green up and the remaining bare spots look worse than ever. Whether the damage is from the dog, ice melt, crabgrass or winter weather, it is now clear. You need a little more. More seed: In a ne bladed lawn choose Blue Wave or one of the Grass Pad Estate Blends. For fescue lawns choose Macho Mix or Heat Wave More water: Water your grass seed ev- ery day. Sometimes, Mother Nature needs little help. Keep seed consistently moist. Topdress: Cover your seed with a thin layer of PrimeraFC grass seed dressing or sphagnum peat. This will hold moisture close to the seed and speed ger- mination. Do not use bagged top soils, be- cause they carry weed seeds. Golf Course Starter: New grass plants need to be fed if they are go- ing to mature before hot summer weather. Feed the seed…easy does it…once now and again in four weeks. Patience: Cold spring soils will not sprout grass seed as quickly as in the fall. It simply takes longer. Take a handful of grass seed and start it in a small Styrofoam cup on the kitchen windowsill. It will sprout more quickly and preview the future. BARE SPOTS Covering Seed Speeds Germination. Now is the time to stop the ugly summer weeds that plan to ambush your lawn as soon as summer soil temperatures heat up. Crabgrass, foxtail, gooseg- rass, barnyard grass and all the other ugly annual summer weed grasses lie dormant in the soil waiting to sprout and ruin your well tended Kansas City lawn. This nasty weed grass in- vasion takes place every year when lawn soil tem- peratures reach above 50°. These alien seeds will sprout sooner in bare spots that are open to the sun, usually in open areas on the west and south. The warm cracks around your driveway, patio and sidewalk will be crabgrass heaven. Depending on the year, this ugly grassy weed hatch usually takes place during mid-April. In lawns with well estab- lished turf, in the shade or on the north side of the house soil temperatures stay cooler. In these areas you may not see ugly weed grasses species until May. In any event it is not nice to procrastinate with Mother Nature. Once these ugly summer grasses sprout, they are hard to kill. Ben Franklin said it best: “Pre- vent Crabgrass Now” or you will really feel silly. The best way to control these ugly summer weed grasses is with two appli- cations of PREVENT! plus fertilizer, once now and again in eight weeks. The PREVENT! formula gives 98% control of crabgrass, foxtail, goosegrass, barn- yard grass and all other summer annual weed grasses. Your “Idiot Proof” summer lawn care pro- gram begins now with the PREVENT! formula. PREVENT! NOW! You’ll Be Sorry If You Don’t.
