THE TRIPLE LINDY News about swimming, diving, & water polo!!!
Volume 2, Issue 1
Aug/Sept 2010 ISSUE
Welcome back to another addi-
tion of The Triple Lindy. I am
extremely excited and ready for the 2010-11 season. We have a
lot of events and new things
coming up.
I have seen a lot of swimmers
compete this summer through
USA swimming and summer league swimming and I am
proud to say that we are com-
ing into this season in much better shape and conditioning
than in the past.
As you may of heard, every two years, UIL athletics realigns the
districts and regions. We have
lost the teams from Keller ISD and Northwest, but gained a
handful of teams from Irving
and the Richland/Haltom area.
First of all, I want all swimmers
and families to attend our an-
nual Pasta Party at Cross Tim-bers Middle School on Sept 2.
At this event, parents will join
the booster club, sign up for
volunteer positions, purchase
swim apparel, and order team
pictures.
Our first meet of the season is
our Inter Squad August on
September 25th.
Our fundraiser this year will be the Sprint Pentathlon on Oct
16th. I expect about 500 swim-
mers at this meet. This meet
will generate funds for the booster club. We need a lot of
help from the parents!
The Varsity will be going on a
team trip to Alief, TX on Dec
10th-11th. I am very excited that our team was invited to
this prestigious swim meet.
It will be our first travel meet in
my tenure at GCISD.
We will be starting varsity water
polo in the spring after regions.
We will be holding tryouts in
December.
The season will begin at the conclusion of Region Champi-
onships.
Finally, we will be hosting the
District 5-5A Championships at our pool. We will need parent
help to make the meet run
smoothly.
I would like to thank all the
parents for being instrumental
in making this program suc-cessful. A big thank you to
Cheril Rios and Debbie Mon-
teiro for being the booster rep-resentatives, the booster club
members for volunteering their
time, and the Green family for donating waters to the swim
team.

Mistakes and omissions may happen. I will do my best to acknowledge mistakes and omissions in the next issue. Please contact me if you have any suggestions. I would like to keep the newsletter to 5 pages or less. The Triple Lindy is planned to be monthly newsletter. The Triple Lindy is in-tended to provide information about GCISD Aquatic Programs, GCISD ath-letes, and alumni.
The varsity swimmers and divers will be competing at the 2010 Alief Varsity Invite on Dec 10-11. Alief is a community in Harris County (Houston). We will be competing against 16 of the finest teams in South Texas. I plan to take approxi-mately 40 varsity swimmers and divers to the competition. Time standards and factors such as work ethic, attendance, and attitude will be considered for travel.
“This is a great invitational
against the top teams in south
texas for our swimmers and
divers.”

RELAY STARTS RELAY STARTS
WITH COACH DAVID ELLINGHAUS OF THE BEGNW MARLINS
BY KELSEY SAVAGE HAYS
Starts set the pace for any race, but in a relay, there are three other people depending on you to nail it successfully. The pressure causes some swimmers to hesitate and others to spring ahead, with splits significantly faster than their individual events. Here’s some advice from coach David Ellinghaus of the BEGNW Marlins for swimmers looking to improve their relay starts: The Arms “It’s important that the starter is confident getting momentum from his arms,” says Ellinghaus. The swimmer should keep his hands out front of his body and use them to track the finisher in the water. When it’s time, the starter swings his arms up and over his head, and follows their movement into a dive. Once you’ve started swinging your arms, focus on producing a fast dive. The Legs In a top-notch relay start, the racer takes a full step forward, all the way from the back of the block to the front with both feet. This step propels the body and is a big part of what makes the relay start faster than a flat start. Novice relay racers might try building up to the full step by keeping one foot at the front of the block and the other at the back. With one foot or two, the step is taken just as the arms come down and forward—the whole body moves in one fluid motion towards the water. Putting It Together To perform a relay start effectively, the swimmer initiates his arms before the finisher touches the wall. The time when the athlete on the block begins circling their arms depends on the speed of the incoming swimmer and how long it takes the athlete on the block to complete the relay start. Judging the timing of when to begin the relay start is why it is very important to practice it.” Ellinghaus makes sure his swimmers practice off all their teammates to prevent error, even if the relay order changes during a meet. And don’t neglect the finishes. Ellinghaus says, “nine times out of ten, a poor start is the fault of the swimmer in the water.” An extra stroke or long glide can cause a false start. To prevent that, Ellinghaus practices finishes as much as starts—helping his swimmers perform the best relays possible.
