Monarchy
One person (king/emperor) has power to make all political decisions
Oligarchy
A few people have the power to make all political decisions
Tyranny
One person seizes power by force and rules single-handedly
Democracy
People vote to make political decisions

Power is inherited (usually father to son)
Lost power because:• Depended on aristocrats during war• Aristocrats wanted more power• Overthrew king

…a few people
Aristocrats who overthrew monarchy
Lost power because:• Ignored needs of the people• Unpopular laws• Enforced with the army• Rich got richer• Eventually the poor turned to army leaders

…one person who is not a lawful ruler.
Seized power illegally, usually by force.
Lost power because:• Ruled harshly• Ignored the needs of the people• People forced the tyrant out
