GRAPES  of  Ghana,  Mali  &  Songhai  of  Medieval  Africa  Poster      On  construction  paper  you  will  demonstrate  your  knowledge  of  G.R.A.P.E.S.  for  the  three  largest  empires  of  medieval  Africa.  The  following  outline  will  provide  you  with  specific  requirements  for  each  category.    

 1) General  Layout  

•  Each  poster  must  include  a  title  (Ghana,  Mali  &  Songhai),  each  letter    (G.R.A.P.E.S),  information  about  the  medieval  African  empires  that  fits  each  category  &  a  picture  that  represents  the  information.      

2)  Information    • G.  (Geography)    

o The  Niger  River  and  the  relationship  of  vegetation  zones  (forest,  savannah,  and  desert)  

• R.(Religion)  o  The  influence  of  Islamic  beliefs,  customs,  and  laws.    

• A.  (Achievements)    o Written  and  oral  traditions  of  African  history  and  culture    

• P.  (Politics)  o Arabic  language  in  government  o The  political  growth  Ghana,  Mali  &  Songhai  empires    

• E  (Economics)    o Trade  in  gold,  salt,  food,  and  slaves  o  Labor  specialization  and  economic  profit    o The  role  of  the  trans-­‐Saharan  caravan  trade    

• S.  (Social  Structure)    o The  importance  of  family  o Labor  specialization    

3) Pictures    • The  pictures  for  each  category  must  support  the  information.    •  They  must  be  related  to  medieval  African  empires
