Mr. Butler's Party The Leader, Oxford, Granville Co.
September 28, 1875
The party at Mr. E. G. BUTLER's on Friday evening last was the occasion of great joy and hilarity among all who had the exquisite good fortune of attending it. We might fill columns of our paper and still not do justice to the festive and interesting events of the ever memorable entertainment.
Scarcely less than one hundred guests were present, and had the number been twice as large Mr. BUTLER's hospitality would have been equal to the demand on it, and yet mirabi/e dictu; or in plain english wonderful to tell he is an - there now we like to have said an old batchelor, but we ( forbear as we propose to confine ourself strictly to the truth; he is not an old bachelor, but he is a ~ bachelor and our word for it he has no excuse for being one.
We do not think, however, he will remain in a state of single blessedness much longer; for he is not a misanthrop and no one but a misanthrop can withstand the bright galaxy of beauty collected at his party. There were gathered under his hospitable roof every description of beauty reflected by the human face divine and it would have been romantic and interesting if Mr. BUTLER had captured one to his fancy and have kept her there as a help mate to minister to his wants in sickness and to double his joy in his health. The Oxford ladies are distinguished for beauty and accomplishments and they never exhibited their charms more lovingly than on last Friday evening. The edibles were in the greatest abundance prepared in a style truly recherche and elicited universal and unstinted commendation.
Lack of space forbids further comment.

The Chronicles of the Class of 1910
It came to pass in those days that Professor Franklin HOBGOOD established a Seminary wherein the daughters of the land might learn of all knowledge and wisdom. And he made a decree, saying, ''Hear, 0 people! The kingdom of the Oxfordites is a land flourishing with the sciences, both Trivium and Quadrivium, and the people that dwell therein are very learned. Ye daughters of the earth, drink at the fountain of truth!"
Now it happened that there had dwelt in that land for many years Mamie ROYSTER, the granddaughter of the king, and she was of the Freshman tribe. And it came to pass that after the king had made the decree there came others, Kent HODNETT, Mary Louise PEED, Lucy Lambeth GREEN, John BASS and Lydia YA TES. Howbeit, John joined the tribe of Sophomores, and Lydia the tribe of Juniors. The Freshmen were a peaceful tribe and scarce were seen or heard for the king and chief rulers had commanded them to keep all the commandments which they had commanded them. They must obey the rulers at all times; they must not borrow garments or ornaments or anything from their neighbors; they must not laugh aloud; they must not look at men; for if they did they would surely receive demerits.
But in the second year of their sojourn they waxed more bold. In that year came Ruby PULLIAM, Mary Lee LYLES and Ruth WHARTON. Now Ruby joined the tribe of Freshmen, Mary Lee the tribe of Sophomores, but Ruth would join only the tribe of Juniors. Nevertheless, Mamie showed to all the people that the tribe of Sophomores was worthy, inasmuch as she made I 00 on Latin examination. And many other valiant deeds did the Sophomores do.
When the worthy pilgrims had become Juniors great was their fame. Other damsels - Ruby FAGGE, Sallie Mae SNIDER and Myrtle RENN -heard and came to see. And when they came they found the half had not been told them. Therefore they began work to do honor to themselves and to the tribe. Moreover, Ruby PULLIAM did such wonderful things that the chief rulers did marvel, and the king did write her father concerning her noble deeds. Then it came to the minds of the Juniors to try their prowess in other ways. On the twenty and second day of the second month they put on the robes of people of former times, yea, even of the time of the Father of the Country, and came before all the people and mocked their ways insomuch that all were amazed and cried, "What manner of maidens are these that bring before our very eyes another generation!"
Notwithstanding the great deeds of the Juniors, these Oxfordites became restless in their territory and longed for new lands to conquer. So they came to the border-land of the Seniors. Now, the Senior tribe is the most powerful and most honored in all the land, so the Captain, Mamie ROYSTER, sent Lucy GREEN (because she was trustworthy) to spy out the land of the Senior, saying, "See thou whether the land be productive or barren, and people therein be strong or weak, and the cities be walled or no." And Lucy returned from the search and said, "The land surely floweth with milk and honey and is good to look upon, but in it there be many strongholds and man)'. giants; nevertheless we are able to overcome all these things." And all the Oxfordites
93 GCGS 1746, Inc. '98
cried, "Let us go up and possess the land." So, on the first day of the ninth month, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and nine, they banded together - twelve strong - as one man and chose Kent HODNETT as captain and marched against the enemy, to put them to confusion.
Now when the tribe saw that the land was their's, they determined to have a great feast to commemorate their victory. So, on the fifteenth day of the tenth month they sent word to all the chief rulers of the Seminary, saying: "Whereas, we have gained this fair land we have proposed to have a night of feasting to celebrate our victory." And all the chief rulers came robed in fine garments, and both the rulers and the Seniors drank and were merry until the night was far spent.
Then the Seniors gave themselves up to their tasks. Louise PEED and Mary Lee LYLES did sit day after day at the musical instruments and did bring forth from them such sounds that it seemed as distant thunder; then softer and sweeter they grew until all the people were filled with rapture. Moreover, Ruth WHARTON and Mamie ROYSTER did lift up their voices in song and it seemed to the other Oxfordites as if they did hear angels' voices. John BASS, also, did a wonderful thing in that she portrayed images, and moreover did imitate nature so well that one almost thought himself walking among the fair scenes which she did draw.
The Seniors proved themselves in other ways also. It had come to their ears that the tribe of Freshmen were making preparation for war; nevertheless the Seniors had no fear. Now, when the great feast day of Thanksgiving had come, the Freshmen marched to the valley of the athletic field and drew up their forces. The Seniors also marched to meet them and there the 'two mightiest armies of the land strove together in the sight of all the tribes of the land and of the Q neighboring peoples not a few. Howbeit, victory fell to the tribe of the Seniors. Then the Seniors shouted for joy.
But the Freshmen cried with a loud voice "because they wanted their Ma-mas." And it came to pass that in this battle the soul of the Seniors was knit with the soul of the Sophomores because they were loyal.
Now there were walled strongholds in the land, to-wit: English, Science, Latin, Mathematics, and many others that must needs be entered, and against these the tribe fell with great force. Before the English citadel could be overcome many difficult passports must be written, and these put the tribe to their wit's end, for if they knew nothing, they must learn something and write. The Science fortress was with difficulty attacked; and before the Mathematics stronghold the loyal workers quailed, but at length the walls began to totter and then they fell . Thus with the others, one after the other. But in each of these high towers was a monster terrible to behold; he was strong and fierce; out of his mouth proceeded a flame and he went about seeking whom he might bind with his strong chain and devour. But the Seniors were strong and although some were wounded, they succeeded in putting under their feet this hideous monster whose name was Examination.
Now it came to pass in those days that the Seniors determined further to show their valor. On the fourth day of the third month, when the grass was green and the earth was bringing forth flowers, they gathered up bugles and swords and armor and again came before all the people to subjugate Q that illustrious Princess who had established an institute for maidens and had fenced it around with biting laws. Again the people marvelled at the deeds of the Seniors.
94 GCGS 1746, Inc. '98
And there are also many other things that the Seniors did which are not told here, for are they not all written in the great black record book? We are confident, however, that no trial or responsibility can daunt the spirit of the tribe of Seniors, and their power and might shall increase more and more until the fame thereof shall fill the whole land.

Historical Sketch
3rd in a series of 4
It is truly said that Father Time is the final judge of good literature; he sifts the writings of the ages and preserves the precious ideas of a Homer, a Dante, a Shakespeare, or a Goethe. In like manner, Father Time is a final judge of schools, and those that rise up in adversity and advance in prosperity from year to year, must have abiding elements of real worth and longevity. The Homer School has stood this test for sixty-four years. It was founded in 1851 when the storm clouds of Civil War were rising, and, after weathering that terrific conflict, it has ever since been in successful operation.
The founder, James H. HORNER, M.A., LL.D., father of the present principal, was an extraordinary man. One might call him a physical, intellectual, and moral giant, for he possessed all the sterling qualities of real manhood. And he was a teacher of unusual ability and success. Thus he is described by those who knew him best. He graduated with the highest honors from the University of North Carolina in 1844. After teaching a few years in Florida and eastern North Carolina, he established the Homer School at Oxford in 1851, and very soon made his school a potent factor in the educational life of the old North State. Through the perils of war and the uncertainties of reconstruction, the school continued its career of usefulness in making men who became governors, judges, preachers, captains of industry, and loyal citizens.
For fourteen years the present principal, Col. J.C. HORNER, a B.A. and M.A. graduate of Davidson College, was associated with his father, who died in 1892.
Bishop J.M. HORNER also devoted a considerable part of his early manhood to the school. After graduating from the University of Virginia and the General Theological Seminary in New York, he became associated with his brother Col. J. C. HORNER and remained steadfast in the development of boys into Christian manhood until he was made bishop in 1898.
Since then Col. J.C. HORNER has been in direct charge of the school. The military feature was introduced in 1880. Year by year the Homer Military School has sent forth its students, strong and soldierly in body, with disciplined minds, and high ideals oflife.
In September 1913, the Homer Military School opened with prospects of a large attendance and a successful year. But in October, the barracks, a large building erected in 1891 , was totally destroyed by fire, with great loss to Col. HORNER, the teachers and cadets. Temporary quarters, however, were secured, and the school continued. Soon afterwards, numerous attractive offers were made by Virginia and Carolina cities to secure the school. In a strong contest with able competitors, Charlotte finally won, and forthwith the rebuilding of the school was begun in Myers Park at Charlotte.

n Session 1914 - 1915
Because of various delays due to financial conditions on account of the European war, the buildings were not altogether ready for occupancy when the Fall term opened in September 1914, and the session started under many unexpected disadvantages One after another these handicaps have been met and overcome. Hard work, perseverance, and a generous outlay of money have done wonders in transforming a bare stubble field into a fully equipped, model institution of learning.
Nothing has been done on a cheap or small scale. The buildings were constructed upon plans for adding to them as fast as the school grows~ and they are of such durable construction that they will remain as monuments for many and many generations. The grounds are ample in area for all purposes, and they too were laid out with discerning care and much forethought for their future beauty.
As soon as the public understood that the school had been formally opened, and that it was under the same high class management which had attended its sixty-four years of past successes, a fuller enrollment of students was quickly obtained. The school term of 1914-1915 closed with brightest prospects for the coming year.
This, indeed, has been another foundation year in the history of the Homer Military School. There has been more serious work in the classroom, greater activity on the athletic field, a stronger unification of school spirit, a more pliable moulding of character, and a higher conception of the true value of discipline.

New Academy The Leader, Oxford, Granville Co.
September 28, 1875
It is with feelings of unfeigned pleasure that we are enabled to state that the Trustees of the Oxford Male Academy have determined to erect a new Academy to be occupied by Prof F. A. FETTER We look upon this step as a compliment to Prof F. and as an indication of his popularity and efficiency as a teacher. Indeed the interest and ability this gentleman has exhibited in the management of the Oxford High School is proverbial.
We learn that he will soon open a night school for the convenience of young men whose opportunities do not admit of their attending school during the day. This is a new enterprise here and will we trust be fiuitful of much good. We learn that quite a number of industrious young men will avail themselves of the opportunity of thus acquiring the rudiments of an education which otherwise would be beyond their reach.
()
()
Just here, however we beg to say in conclusion that as the Trustees have determined to build an Academy we hope they will build one that will be an ornament to the town and that will reflect credit on their good taste. Let them also see to getting good desks and other furniture such as necessary in the appointment of a well-regulated Academy. U

Some Old Oxford Families Oxford Public Ledger, Oct. 13, 1953
With a Few Historical and Genealogical Notes Concerning a Number of Their Members, Including Several References to the Youngest Generation
By Francis B. Hayes
Benjamin Hays TALTON's house on Hays Street is built on land which has been owned and occupied by members of his family for five generations. The TALTON children are of the sixth generation that have lived on this land. This fact is believed to be without parallel in the annals of Oxford.
Dr. Samuel DUTY owned and occupied the old HAYS place a hundred years ago. His daughter, Sally, old DUTY house as did her son, Dr. Benjamin Kinsey HAYS. Mrs. Kate Hays FLEMING owned a part of the old DUTY-HAYS land as does her daughter, Mrs. Isabel Fleming TALTON, towit, the TALTON home on Broad Street, which was the home of Benjamin Hays TALTON prior to his marriage, when he built on another part of the old DUTYHA YS land and now occupies the premises with his family.
Many Cooper Descendants In seeking a parallel to this case one's mind turns to several families in Oxford of which Mrs. Ann Downey COOPER was an ancestor.
Col. Leonidas Compton EDWARDS was the owner and occupant of the present Ellis CANNADY place. The first Mrs. EDWARDS' mother, Mrs. Anrie Downey COOPER, was at times a member of the EDWARDS household. The second Mrs. EDWARDS, the former Mrs. Nathanial Boardman CANNADY, was a niece of the first and a granddaughter of Mrs. COOPER· Her son, Ellis CANNADY, is of the fourth generation to occupy the former EDWARDS premises, and his children, who were brought up there, one of the fifth generation from Mrs. COOPER These children's children who sometimes sojourn on the place, are of the sixth generation.
The Ellis CANNADY grandchildren are of the fifth generation from Dr. Peter Wesley YOUNG, · who was a Confederate army surgeon and for long a leading practitioner of medicine in Oxford.
Mrs. YOUNG, mother of Mrs. N. B. CANNADY, was a daughter of Mrs. Ann Downey COOPER
Mrs. COOPER was also the mother of and sometimes an occupant of the residence of James Crawford COOPER This residence is the one now known as the John A. WILLIAMS place. James Crawford COOPER was the father of Mrs. William H. WHITE, who was the mother of Mrs John A. WILLIAMS. The WILLIAMSes now live on part of the old COOPER place, and they have a daughter, Mrs. Wilson S. COMER, who also lives on a part of the place. The COMER children are of the sixth generation from Mrs. Ann Downey COOPER
John A. WILLIAMS' mother Mrs. Sue Bryan WILLIAMS, was a daughter of Harry BRYAN, who with the COMER children make five generations.
99 GCGS 1746, Inc. '98
Alexander COOPER another son of Mrs. Ann Downey COOPER, lived in the present Mrs. James P. FLOYD house on College Street. He opened Alexander Avenue through his property. n He left several sons, two of whom, David Y. COOPER and John D. COOPER, moved to Henderson and took a leading part in building up that city's industries. Many of their descendants are carrying on in the footsteps of their elders.
Again, Mrs. COOPER is an ancestor, six generations back, of the children of Thomas Moore EVINS. The grandchildren of Charles Alexander GREGORY, children of his daughter, Mrs. Cabell Mayo TABB are also of the sixth generation from Mrs. COOPER
Hickses Among Earliest Granville Settlers Thomas IDCKS was a large holder ofreal estate just outside Oxford's northern limits, much of which real estate is now within the enlarged limits of the town. His son, Col. Thomas Iverson HICKS, and his grandson, Edward Hubbell HICKS, lived on the old HICKS estate. Later Edward Hubbell HICKS' son Thomas Edward HICKS, and Thomas Edward HICKS' daughter, Roberta ("Sunny"), who married Royal Hobgood ROYSTER, lived on part of the property. The ROYSTER children are of the sixth generation from Thomas HICKS.
Edward Hubbell HICKS, with his family, lived in what later was known as the DELACROIX residence which was burned to the ground February 19, 1915.
In 1890 Thomas Edward HICKS built a summer residence, Brantwood, on a part of his greatgrandfather's old holding, and this residence became Brantwood Hospital in 1920. When the present Granville Hospital, on May 12, 1938, was formally opened on the old Brantwood ( ·) premises, the former HICKS summer residence became the home of some of the hospital nurses. The Royal Hobgood ROYSTERs lived in the present Sterling CARRINGTON house, built by Edward Hubbell HICKS on his own land, and now much enlarged and modernized.
Col. Thomas Iverson HICKS had a daughter Caroline, who married William SKINNER. They were the parents of William SKINNER, Jr., who married Cynthia, daughter of Augustine LANDIS. This couple were the parents of several children, among them Caroline H. and Frances Burton SKINNER.
Caroline H. SKINNER married Cameron Herndon EASTON. A grandson, also named Cameron Herndon EASTON, is of the seventh generation from Thomas HICKS.
Frances Burton SKINNER married William Thomas CREWS and they were the parents of Mary Lane CREWS, who married Charles Lamar BANISTER. The BANISTER children are of the seventh generation from Thomas HICKS.
Thomas HICKS' son, Col. Thomas Iverson HICKS, had a son, Thomas C. HICKS, whose daughter Annie became the third wife of Capt. Augustus LANDIS. Their son, Arthur LANDIS, married Janie Outlaw HUNT and they had a daughter, Janie Outlaw HUNT, who married Harry Lee HALL, mother of Miss Mary HALL, the school supervisor, and grandmother of the children of Henry P . HALL and Fritz HALL. This makes the HALL children of the sixth generation from Thomas Blount LITTLEJOHN.

Mr. Littlejohn Owned All Oxford Land The man who in 1811 sold to Granville County fifty acres adjoining the court house on which to build the town of Oxford was Thomas Blount LITTLEJOHN. He lived in, and may have built, the old Dr. Leonidas C. TAYLOR house on Williamsboro Street, now the home of the Veterans ofForeign Wars.
Mr. LITTLEJOHN had a son, James Thomas LITTLEJOHN, a lawyer, who remained in Oxford while his brothers and sisters scattered. One daughter of Thomas Blount LITTLEJOHN, Lucinda Jane, married Alexander Strachan JONES. This couple were the parents of Alice Mutter JONES, who married Col. William H. CHEEK. A daughter of the CHEEKs is the present Mrs. Augustus Steele RIDDLE. The RIDDLE children are of the seventh generation from Thomas HICKS, and of the fifth generation from both Augustine LANDIS and David Alexander HUNT.

Oxford Just After the War Between the States Oxford Public Ledger, Nov. 2, 1956
By Francis B. Hayes
Part 1 of2
When the Confederate soldier returned to his home at the close of the war he found conditions vastly different from those he had left. He had to begin life anew and according to a pattern that was strange to him. His Confederate money, if any, was only so many scraps of paper. United States greenbacks were almost as scarce as the proverbial hen's teeth, and hard money was a rarity.
United States paper currency in 10-cent, 25-cent, and 50-cent denominations were in circulation.
About the only things left for the returned soldiers were the land and such houses as had not been burned by Sherman's army, plus a goodly portion of good old American grit, and plenty of those around that felt as he did. I believe Sherman burned no homes in this part of North Carolina, but the houses had suffered for lack of proper care.
Most of the slaves that had tended the land had an idea that now that they were free they did not have to work. They soon found out differently. They hired out for such wages as the whites could pay, which compared with today's wages were ridiculously small. Negro cooks received $3 or $4 a month and some of them helped themselves to enough food to keep their families from starving. A wood-cutter or gardener received 50 cents a day and dinner or 75 cents with no meals, and a day was a day.
An Uphill Job Old soldiers and others worked the land as best they could with such equipment as they could gather. There was no such thing for them as pensions, social security payments, GI loans or any other form of government assistance. To use a rather inelegant expression, it was "root hog or die".
Miss Lewis Sums Up the Situation After this paper had been written I saw some pronouncements by Miss Nell Battle LEWIS in her column in the News and Observer that seemed so appropriate for use in this connection that I made room for them. In enumerating many things in North Carolina's heritage of which we all should be proud, she said: "It is the exhausted, desolate, but spiritually undefeated Confederate soldier returning after Appomattox to his impoverished home.
''It is the wife of that soldier, valiantly struggling with him through the hardships and indignities and dangers of Reconstruction.
"I declare that whenever I read about Reconstruction, the South's survival of it and subsequent progress seem to me more and more one of the major miracles of history."
The returned soldier, as well as the old men, boys and others who for one reason or another had remained at home, faced the situation with courage. Be it said also that no one showed more of
103 GCGS 1746, Inc. '98
this commendable quality than the women. They did their part and more and thought nothing of it. They were really the helpmates of their husbands and filled the role heroically.
Shin Plasters Were Good The earlier post-bellum days were before my time. Not until they had changed a good deal am I able to give first-hand information about them. I remember the old fractional paper money. I recall that as a school boy when we chipped in I 0 cents each to buy a ball and bat one boy contributed his I 0 cents in greenback. He was admonished that if it did not pass he would have to make it good. It passed, and I have no doubt that the specimens I have would be accepted at the bank at face value but they are worth more than that to me as souvenirs.
The purpose of the present paper is to recall the parts done by the men I remember as among those who pulled Oxford out of its wartime dilapidation and started it on its way to what we now see it.
The Granville Grays The first captain of the Granville Grays was George WORTHAM. He soon was promoted to a colonelcy and was succeeded as captain by Augustus LANDIS. Captain LANDIS was partially disabled by a wound at Cold Harbor, and then did some recruiting work, while Alex F. SPENCER led the Granville Grays until the end of the war.
Col. George WORTHAM (1823-1883) was a lawyer. He was of the family ofWORTHAMs that lived in the Berea section and were among the mainstays of Geneva Church. He practiced
()
his profession in Oxford for a considerable period of time and died here at the comparatively () early age of 60 years.
Captain Augustus LANDIS (1833-1892) had been a merchant before the war. After the war he was connected for a while with the firm of GRANDY Brothers, merchants, but was too ambitious and too good a salesman long to remain in a junior position. In the early 1870's he branched out for himself and in course oftime became Oxford's leading merchant, a position he maintained for many years. His store was where the Firestone and the Carolina Theatre now do business. Many descendants of the LANDIS name and other names are now among the prominent citizens of Oxford.
Captain LANDIS had three brothers and a brother-in-law who were Confederate soldiers. One brother was Dr. George LANDIS, a sergeant major. After the war he practiced medicine in Oxford for some years, and then moved to Williamsboro, where he continued to practice his profession until his death in 1908, survived by a large family .
James Y. LANDIS (1842-1918), another brother, was a traveling salesman who lived in Oxford for some years and then moved to Henderson. He also left a family . The third brother was Charles E. LANDIS (c. 1832-1912), who engaged in the tobacco business in Oxford so long as his health permitted and then spent the remainder of his years in the Old Soldiers Home at Raleigh. The brother-in-law, Capt. Lunsford A. PASCHALL II, was killed a short time before the shooting stopped.
Captain Alexander Farrar SPENCER for a considerable period after the war conducted a hack business between Oxford and Henderson. He carried the mail and such passengers

as had occasion to make the trip. When railroad connection for Oxford was made in 1881 he lost his hack route. He was then too old to re-engage in his trade as a master brick mason. He lived with his daughter, Mrs. William Shields HUNDLEY in the home in which he was born on McClanahan Street, opposite the Community House. A short time before his death he went to the Old Soldiers' Home in Raleigh, where the end came in 1905 when he was about 80 years old.
Building Up Begins Many more men went into the war than ever came out. Those who returned home to Oxford and helped to revitalize the town were businessmen, professional men, mechanics, merchants and men in all walks of life. Together they faced the future with grim determination and worked to restore a disrupted economy. Others of them I remember are mentioned below.
Dr. Peter Wesley YOUNG (1829-1884), who went out with the Granville Grays, was promoted to the office of surgeon. After his return to Oxford he, together with his partner, Dr. Zebulon Montgomery PASCHALL, did the leading medical practice in Oxford and vicinity for many years. His son, James Richard YOUNG, was long North Carolina's insurance commissioner and the father of Dr. David YOUNG, former head of the state's public hospitals. Ellis CANNADY is a grandson of Dr. P. W. YOUNG. A daughter is the wife of Banker W. A. HUNT of Henderson.
Charles F. KINGSBURY came home and was one of the town's leaders in building up a leaftobacco sales market. He erected a warehouse on the northeast comer of Gilliam and Spring Streets, a large one and the second to be built in Oxford. In his old age he retired to Baltimore where he died in an old soldiers' home in 1911.
Isaac Henderson STEAGALL (1838-1919), returned from the war to Oxford and followed his ·trade as a painter and was at times a merchant. He was the father of Capt. James I. STEAGALL, of World War I, and grandfather of the present Col. Gordon STEAGALL.
Balthrop SMITH, as a vidette, followed Lee throughout the war. At its close he returned to Oxford and engaged in his trade as a painter. He died in the Old Soldiers' Home in Raleigh in 1913.
Many Oxford men went into the war with units other than the Granville Grays.
Some Colonels Tazwell Lee HARGROVE (1830-1889) came out of the war as a lieutenant colonel. He distinguished himself as the defender of South Anna Bridge on June 26, 1863. He was an outstanding politician and was North Carolina's attorney general in 1873-76. For many years he did a good law practice in Oxford. He left no descendants but was related to the BAKERs of Oxford, John A. and others.
Alexander Smith PEACE (1840-1905) was an officer with Colonel HARGROVE at South Anna Bridge, where he was severely wounded (supposed at the time to have been fatally wounded). After the war he practiced law in Oxford for some years and was for several terms solicitor in the Granville Inferior Court. He retired from the bar to become
105 GCGS 1746, Inc. '98
a successful farmer. He was the father of Alexander S. PEACE and the grandfather of Mrs. Arch KEELS.
Rush Johnson MITCHELL (1820-1897) had been a soldier in the Mexican War and rose to a lieutenant colonelcy in the Confederate Army. He owned one of Oxford's oldest drug stores, which stood where the upper two Rose stores now stand, and had many interests outside of drugs. He did much to keep Oxford on a fairly even keel during the days it was finding itself after the war. With his family he lived in the house now occupied by the Woman's Club, before it was moved from the comer to make room for Mrs. A. S. HALL's residence. He was the grandson of Mrs. George W. HOBBS.
Thomas Brown VENABLE (1825-1894) was a lieutenant colonel in the army and was prominent at the Granville bar for a generation. His residence stood where the Oxford High School building now stands. He was the father of the late Mrs. Bessie SOUTHERLAND and of Abram Watkins VENABLE II who in 1887, with E. E. PASCHALL, established the News of Oxford which became the Oxford Public Ledger after John Theodore BRITT had acquired it several months later.

In 1900, they had been married 29 years having 8 children and all were living. I need information and proof of the parents of Isreal M. BAILEY and Annie (PHANNY) BYRD and any other information. Can anyone share information on the GRIGGS, LONGMIRES and Emily, William and John BLOUNT after 1860.

I am descended from Reuben MOSS/MORSE of Granville County. His son, Turner MOSS, left NC about 1821 - 1825 with 4 sons and came to Texas. I found some information that mentioned that Turner's land was sold for debt. Reuben's will is worded such that I wonder if Turner may not have had a good relationship with the rest of the family. Does anyone know about Turner's oldest son, Thomas. He did not come to Texas. I think he may have died before the others left. Also looking for any information about Turner's wife Sally (Sarah) REVIS (REA VIS) who was probably from Granville County, too.

Legendary Greens
The ritual of garnishing our homes with evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands has existed for centuries. But why do we do it? Here are some hints at the history behind the greens that revive a bleak winter with a fresh breath of life.
Mistletoe No winter plant carries quite the mystique - or fun - of mistletoe. Druid priests in ancient Britain noted this parasite plant's ability to wind around a tree as it grows, never planting roots in the ground. Their conclusion: Mistletoe must be sacred. White-robed Druid high priests observed winter solstice in late December by climbing an oak tree and cutting down mistletoe. Crowds caught the mistletoe with outspread robes. Should even a single spring touch the earth, it signified extreme bad luck. Catching the mistletoe meant fertility for animals.
The current custom of kissing beneath mistletoe got its start in Scandinavian mythology. Blader, son of the Norse goddess oflove, Frigga, was killed by an arrow of mistletoe. Frigga's tears fell onto the mistletoe and turned into white berries. Frigga swore that mistletoe would never again be a source of death, but instead, should promote love: Anyone caught standing beneath the plant should receive a kiss.
Flowering Branches As an emblem of nature's transformation, flowering branches hold special meaning in the gloom of winter, when the promise of spring' s renewal keeps spirits hopeful. One story suggests that at the birth of Jesus, rivers ran with wine and previously bare trees blossomed, despite the icy cold.
In Sweden, the idea that blossoms are the fulfillment of the ultimate Christmas promise has been honed into an annual custom. On St. Lucia's Day, December 13, girls plant a cherry branch in wet sand. If the branch blooms before Christmas, it means all their holiday wishes will be fulfilled.
