Writing Winning GrantsDo not make assumptions about grantor’s knowledge of your program.

Be concise and pack a punch – use expressive language.

Use forceful rather than wishy-washy verbs, for example; use ‘will’ rather than ‘could’.

Use statistics to state needs if possible.

Use perfect grammar - Dot every ‘I’ and cross every ‘T’.

Complete all required sections and submit on time. Get required signatures.

Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite!

Make it memorable!

Writing Winning Grants

Grantors have special interests that you need to consider before you apply - understand their point of view and pattern of giving

Grantors often give to programs in their geographic area

Grantors want to feel that the money they give is needed - be specific about your target population and the project’s results

Contact the grantor whenever possible through a phone call or inquiry letter
