In 2006, The L.S. Starrett Company acquired Tru-Stone Technologiesin Waite Park, MN. With this acquisition, a broad variety of newcapabilities are now available to Starrett customers.
OEM CapabilitiesOur Tru-Stone Technologies Division continues to provide solutionsto customers in precision granite, carbon fiber, ceramic, highprecision vacuum chucks and other materials. We offer granitemachine bases and surface plates to meet your requirements up to55 feet long and weighing 72 tions
Whether your application requires a simple standard surface plateor a large OEM assembly, the Tru-Stone Technologies Division willwork with you to fulfill those requirements.
Every linear measurement depends on an accurate referencesurface from which final dimensions are taken. Starrett PrecisionGranite Surface Plates provide this reference plane for workinspection and for work layout. Their high degree of flatness, overallquality and workmanship also make them ideal bases for mountingsophisticated mechanical, electronic and optical gaging systems.
MaterialThe granite for Starrett surface plates has been selected for thebest balance of physical properties, maximum resistance to wearand for deflection under load. Each plate has been lapped to a finemicroinch finish to minimize tool wear and drag.
The most important element in the performance and life of granitesurface plates is the percentage of quartz that is present in thestone. Quartz is more than twice as resistant to wear as the otherminerals in granite. It provides bearing points that are of a hard, highly polished, smooth character which protect the accuracy andfinish of both the surface plate and the tools and instruments usedon it.
Starrett Crystal Pink Granite has the highest percentage of quartz ofany granite. Our Charcoal Black Granite also contains quartz, thougha slightly lower content than our Crystal Pink, but higher than otherplates produced with black granite. Higher quartz content meansgreater wear resistance. The longer a surface plate holds itsaccuracy, the less often it will require resurfacing, ultimatelyproviding better value.
Selection Accuracy Under LoadStarrett Crystal Pink and Charcoal Black Granite plates have athickness capable of supporting a total normal load equal to 50 lb.for each square foot (24kg for each 1,000 sq. cm) of surface arealoaded in the center of the plate – without deflecting the plate alonga diagonal of more than one-half the flatness tolerance. This is theaccepted rating in the U.S. Federal Specification GGG-P-463c.
In the situations where abnormal loading conditions are anticipated,Starrett can engineer and modify surface plate thickness to meetvirtually any requirement.
Ledges and ClampingSurface plates without work clamping ledges are recommended forsustained accuracy and reliability. Ledges are for work clampingpurposes only. If excessive torque is used when applying clamps toledges, it can adversely affect measurements taken near the plateedges. If clamping is important, T-slots and threaded metal insertsmay be installed in the surface.
AccuracySpecificationsStarrett Granite Surface Plates meet or exceed U.S. FederalSpecification GGG-P-463c.

Certified AccuracyBefore shipment, each surface plate must pass a critical finalinspection to prove that its entire surface is within the specifiedtolerance. The final inspection is done with an autocollimator in a controlled atmosphere. This instrument is checked and certifiedagainst standards traceable to the U.S. National Institute ofStandards and Technology (NIST). The instrument’s certification is on file at the Starrett Tru-Stone Technologies Division in WaitePark, MN.
All shipments of Starrett precision granite products include aCertificate of Inspection which verifies traceability to NIST as wellas certifying that the inspection requirements of U.S. MIL-I-45208Aand Federal Spec. GGG-P-463c have been met.
Periodic InspectionEvery surface plate in use should be frequently inspected, especially under shop conditions where abrasion is common. Aneffective inspection program should include regular checks with anautocollimator. If tolerance variations are excessive, the plate canbe transferred to work involving less accuracy or it can beresurfaced to restore its original level of accuracy.
Resurfacing ServicesResurfacing facilities for Starrett and other makes of granitesurface plates are available in our plant or yours. For details, referto the last page of this section.
Design AssistanceStarrett Tru-Stone Technologies Division engineers will provideprompt assistance on any problem related to surface plate design, installation or use. Our staff is available to assist in your design oflarger OEM projects.

Technical Information
AccuracyStarrett Granite Surface Plates are manufactured in three grades of accuracy:
◆ Grade AA - Laboratory GradeThis is typically specified for precision operations in constanttemperature gaging rooms and metrology departments.
◆ Grade A – Inspection GradeThis is typically specified for general work in quality control.
◆ Grade B – Toolroom GradeThis is typically specified for production checking workthroughout the shop.
Unilateral Flatness ToleranceOverall flatness tolerance is based on unilateral measurement. All points on the work surface shall be contained between twoparallel planes separated at a distance no greater than the amount specified for each particular grade and size as shown in our listings.
Repeat Reading ToleranceRepeat reading tolerance is easily checked with Repeat ReadingGage. This gage detects local areas, not overall flatness
In addition to the overall flatness tolerance referred to above,Starrett provides repeat reading tolerances as follows:

For Oversize Parts and AssemblingStarrett has unparalleled experience and expertise in building special,extra-large granite surface plates and custom products from graniteto meet specific requirements.
All Starrett special surface plates are made from single, solid slabs ofgranite quarried in one piece, machined in one piece and finished toyour specified dimensions and tolerances.
Above: Starrett offers unparalleled design expertise and experience towork with your engineers to create the ideal custom solution for yourapplication.
Special plates are usually requested in two different categories:
Inspecting oversize parts: The first category is for inspectingoversize parts and assemblies such as diesel engine blocks andcrankshafts, vehicle frames, missile components and ground supportequipment.
Inquiries for granite surface plates to accommodateoversize parts and assemblies should indicate:
1. Type of part to be staged
2. Distribution of weight
3. Degree of inspection accuracy required
4. Work holding requirements
5. Footing requirements, ceiling height andavailability of heavy-duty work-handling equipment
Modifying standard plates: The second general categoryrelates to modifying standard plates or building special surfaceplates for work-holding attachments of many different types.

Surface FinishEven distribution of large quartz crystalsprovides a smooth finish, whichsignificantly reduces wear on the surfaceplate and the instruments used on it. Thisfine micro-finish, combined with the naturalvoids in thesurface, prevents wringing and provides avelvety-smooth tool action.
Wear LifeOur experience with surface plateperformance in customers’ plants showsthat non-quartz-bearing granite in averagedaily use requires resurfacing about once ayear. Crystal Pink plates used in thesesame plants have required resurfacing onlyonce every three to five years, on average.

Three-Face Granite Tri-Squares provide an excellent, economicalway for accurately checking the X-Y-Z axes on CNC machine toolsand coordinate measuring machines.
Lying in the horizontal position, with an indicator in the spindle, the X and Y axes can be checked for 90º squareness. With the square in
the vertical position, tracing along the vertical edge of the squarecan check the perpendicularity of the Z axis.
Granite tri-squares may also be used in the same manner that steelsquares would be used for the direct checking of squareness andstraightness.
Toolmakers’ FlatsThese handy flats are small precisionsurface plates that are ideal for manyinspection and checking uses throughout theplant.
They are especially well suited for layout workand offer an easy, portable reference for gagingsmall parts.
