Day 6: Cusco City Tour

Early pick up from hotel to start a city tour visiting Cusco’s historical Inca and Spanish colonial monuments, such as the

Main Square, known in Inca times as Huacaypata or the Warrior’s Square, where many key events in Cusco’s history took

place. The Cathedral, originally built on the site of the old temple of Suntur Wasi (House of God), is now the church of El

Triunfo. Of particular interest are the choir cloisters, the pulpit, the engravings on the altar and the furniture. Go on to visit

the Church and Convent of Santo Domingo, a Spanish construction belonging to the Dominican Order built on the

foundations of the Inca temple of Koricancha or Temple of the Sun. Koricancha (place of gold in Quechua) was the main

religious building of the Incas. Dedicated to the worship of the sun, the walls of the temple were once covered with sheets

of gold. Magnificent blocks of finely carved stone were used in its construction.

After the city tour visit the ruins outside the city of Cusco, Sacsayhuaman, a huge Inca fortress built on three 360 m long

overlapping platforms. Continue on to Tambomachay, known as the Inca baths. Apparently it was a site dedicated to the

worship of water and a resting place for the Inca monarch.

Visit Kenko with a huge 5.9 m-high stone block that looks like a puma, and passages, canals and stairways with stone

engravings representing animals. Finally see Puca Pucará, which was an administrative and military centre formed by

terraces, stairways, passages, turrets and vaulted niches.

ROSARIO DEL LAGO

La Casona Hotel Boutique, located in the historic center of the city of La Paz, is a building that is anarchitectural legacy of colonial style, built in the seventeenth century. It is linked to the FranciscanOrder, who built the Convent and the Lesser Basilica of San Francisco and it was established thatduring Colonial times the Franciscan Order owned the surrounding land. But during the long building process of the San Francisco Convent, the Franciscans sold part of theland adjoining the convent for its construction and completion and it is believed that one of thedirectors of the project was given the ground where La Casona Hotel Boutique now sits as payment.During the eight years of restoration the same architectural and construction elements that exist inthe San Francisco Convent were found, among them, the foundation stone, Gambote brick floors, adobe walls, “cañahueca“ arches and ceilings, tiered fountains, hand-carved stone doors and windowscarved in walnut wood, original features of colonial architecture. During the restoration of La CasonaHotel Boutique a “tapado” was found so named for hidden treasures which during colonial times inthis region people used to store their valuables in secret locations; often at death the owner of the"tapado" would take the secret of its location with him to the grave. The Maldonado Family haspreserved these historic colonial spaces as modern hotel attractions.Visitors of La Casona Hotel Boutique will have the feeling of stepping back in time exploring differentenvironments, stone patios, terraces, towers, stables, the belfry and viewpoints that have beencleverly situated so that they can have an unforgettable experience. La Casona Hotel Boutique istestimony to the colonial architecture and local history that partly defines the city of La Paz and iswitness to its enduring identity, essence and overwhelming spirit.

I began my career in the travel industry 20 years agospecialising in the lesser visited areas of Central America.Forever the adventurer the vast continent south of theisthmus beckoned me down to Patagonia where I workedat the edge of the Torres del Paine National Park ensuringtravellers were matched to suitable steeds, had packedenough dry socks for a week out in the wilderness and thatthe guides had brought the Chilean vino and Cerveza!

Memories abound over the years, from cruising around theGalapagos with my intrepid 70 something mother to whitewater rafting on river rapids in Peru with my 6 year olddaughter.

We are the official travel partner of ArBolivia Project, an initiative founded by The Cochabamba Project, in conjunctionwith approximately 1,000 smallholder families, that focuses on reforestation and sustainable land use within thetropical regions of Bolivia. The ArBolivia Project takes a business approach and splits the profits from timber revenues equally with farmers, ratherthan paying local people a salary and exporting most of the profit overseas. This way, the project is far more likely to besustainable, and ultimately successful, by addressing social and environmental problems with a business solution. It takes 25 years and more than £60 for a typical tree to reach sufficient maturity to be felled and exported, which iswhere ArBolivia relies on donations. Our project sponsorship programme guarantees a £60 donation for every persontravelling with HighLives. 100% of donations go directly to the ArBolivia Project to ensure that farmers are paid andsupported to enable their trees to grow and avoid slash and burn farming. We also encourage our customers to matchthis donation, which we facilitate on their behalf. The ArBolivia Project has been structured so that it can be replicated more widely, both within Bolivia and elsewhereand we look forward to supporting its expansion across Latin America in the future.
