NATURALMENTE FLAMENCO

EN Artistic expression is part of human nature. It has existed since the dawn of our species. Consequently, it is the result of a process of natural evolution, as well as of our own evolution as individuals. Music and dance are a universal language, a way of expressing and conveying emotions and feelings, and for the region of Andalusia flamenco is its most meaningful expression, its innermost soul—the cultural manifestation of an entire people, born of their roots and nourished by their unique, intrinsic history. Flamenco is a strong voice in that riotous inner chorus, welling up from the storehouse of experi-ences that define us as individual members of a single species. That is why it thrills us and stirs our emotions, for no one is impervious to feeling. It penetrates the very core of those who experience it, moving and speaking directly to the heart, without frills or fanfare. It has no need of them. Flamen-co is natural. All this is made patent in Naturally Flamenco, a production that presents this intangible world heritage in a sincere, authentic way. It is the natural consequence of the combined enthusiasm, knowledge and re-markable sensibility of the members of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, professionals with an abiding passion for flamenco who have much to tell us about this art. With the choreographic input of Rubén Olmo – former director of the Andalusian Flamenco Ballet and winner of the National Dance Prize –, the artistic guidance of Úrsula López, – who has a long history with the company – and the active contributions of the cast, this show clearly proves that learning is a lifelong process in the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía. By this point in time, flamenco dance has become part of nature and life itself, free and unfettered by anything but the discipline that teaches its practitioners the art of being simply natural. And so the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía seeks and strives for freedom, naturally.

FR Poursuivant l’exploration de différents vocabulaires, styles chorégra-phiques et cultures tout au long de leur saison de danse, les Théâtres de la Ville sont heureux de présenter la première compagnie de flamenco d’Espagne, le Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía. Cette compagnie s’est produite dans le monde entier et certain.e.s des meilleur.e.s danseurs.ses espagnol.e.s ont étudié et se sont produit.e.s avec elle, notamment Israel Galván, Isabel Bayón, Rafael Campallo, Belén Maya, Rafaela Carrasco, Fernando Romero, Mercedes Ruiz et María José Franco. Naturally Flamenco est une production qui présente ce patri-moine mondial intangible de manière sincère et authentique. Avec onze danseurs.ses, trois musicien.ne.s et deux chanteurs.ses, cette soirée exubé-rante, pleine d’émotions, de performances en direct et de savoir-faire est la conséquence naturelle de l’enthousiasme, des connaissances et de la re-marquable sensibilité des membres hautement professionnels du Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía. Avec l’apport chorégraphique de Rubén Olmo – ancien directeur du Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía et lauréat du Prix national de la danse – et sous la direction artistique d’Úrsula López, qui a une longue expérience de la compagnie, et la collaboration active de la troupe, ce spec-tacle prouve que l’apprentissage est un processus qui dure toute la vie dans l’art du flamenco.

DE Die Théâtres de la Ville setzen ihre Erkundung verschiedener choreo-graphischer Stile und Kulturen während der gesamten Tanzsaison fort und freuen sich, Ihnen Spaniens Flamenco-Kompanie Nr. 1, das Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, zu präsentieren. Diese Kompanie ist in der ganzen Welt auf-getreten; einige der besten spanischen TänzerInnen haben bei ihr studiert und mit ihr getanzt, allen voran Israel Galván, Isabel Bayón, Rafael Campallo, Belén Maya, Rafaela Carrasco, Fernando Romero, Mercedes Ruiz und María José Franco. Musik und Tanz bilden eine universelle Sprache, eine Art, Emo-tionen und Gefühle auszudrücken und zu vermitteln. Der Flamenco ist die bedeutendste Ausdrucksform der Region Andalusien, ihre tiefste Seele. Er stellt die kulturelle Manifestation eines ganzen Volkes dar, das aus seinen Wurzeln geboren wurde und durch seine einzigartige und organische Ge-schichte genährt wird. Selbstverständlich handelt es sich bei Naturally Flamenco um einen Abend, der dieses immaterielle Welterbe ehrlich und authentisch präsentiert. Mit elf TänzerInnen, drei MusikerInnen und zwei SängerInnen ist dieser ausgelassene Abend voller Emotionen, Live-Perfor-mance und Virtuosität die natürliche Folge der Begeisterung, des Wissens und der bemerkenswerten Sensibilität der hoch-professionellen Mitglieder des Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía. Mit einer Choreographie von Rubén Olmo – ehemaliger Direktor des Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía und Gewinner des Nationalen Tanzpreises – und der künstlerischen Leitung von Úrsula López, die über eine langjährige Erfahrung mit der Kompanie verfügt, und der aktiven Mitarbeit der Truppe beweist dieses Programm, dass das Lernen in der Kunst des Flamencos ein lebenslanger Prozess ist.

BIOGRAPHIES

ÚRSULA LÓPEZArtistic Director, Choreographer & Soloist

Flamenco dancer Úrsula López (Montilla, Córdoba, 1976) earned her degree in Spanish dance and classical dance. In Seville she studied flamenco under legendary teachers like Manolete and Manolo Marín. In 1996 she joined the Andalusian Dance Company (now the Andalusian Flamenco Ballet), and for more than eight years she appeared as a soloist in all the company’s shows, performing at the most important festivals and theatres in the world.

With her own company, she has participated in the leading flamenco festi-vals in Spain and abroad (including those of Jerez and Seville) and worked with artists such as Rafael Campallo, Dorantes, Javier Ruibal and Andrés Marín. She also appeared as a guest performer with the Spanish National Ballet, directed by José Antonio Ruiz. In addition to creating several land-mark productions in contemporary flamenco, Úrsula López is also a respect-ed educator, having taught almost continuously throughout her career as a flamenco dancer.

RUBÉN OLMOAssistant Choreographer

After enrolling at the Conservatory of Seville at the age of nine, he graduat-ed with a degree in Spanish and classical dance, and today Rubén Olmo is widely regarded as an up-and-coming choreographer and performer of Spanish dance. He already has an impressive track record as a dancer. Olmo has earned several major distinctions in his career, including the Pilar López Prize for Best Performer, Giraldillo for Best Choreography (for Tranquilo alboroto, 2010), Giraldillo for Best Director (for Bailando una vida, 2016), and the 2015 National Dance Prize in the performance category. He cur-rently combines his teaching work at the Andalusian Dance Centre with professional collaborations, such as El amor brujo with Ballet Víctor Ullate- Comunidad de Madrid and El público at the Teatro Real. “I have very fond memories of my time as director of this company. It’s a great satisfaction to return now at the invitation of Úrsula López, with whom I share the Spanish dance aesthetic. Sharing the flamenco that runs through my veins with the young talents of this company is a privilege.”
