Trumpeter Swan Marsh Project and the
Conservation Research Center of Teton Science Schools
Habitat alteration and unregulated harvest brought trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) to near extinction across North America by 1900. By the 1940’s, the only nesting group of trumpeter swans to avoid extinction in the lower 48 states was the Greater Yellowstone population. Here, the last 100 trumpeter swans from western Canada wintered side-by-side with the remnant Greater Yellowstone populations at high elevations in the region. Trumpeter swans are now a species of special concern in Wyoming. Teton Science Schools have partnered with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Ducks Unlimited, the Intermountain West Joint Venture, Earth Friends Wildlife Foundation and private donors to develop 11 acres of shallow marsh habitat for trumpeter swans, other waterfowl and shorebirds.
Key Components of Teton Science Schools’ Swan Marshes • Large, shallow marshes provide extensive feeding habitat • Undulating, vegetated shorelines allow swans to hide from
predators and protect their young • Submergent aquatic plants and associated wetland vegetation
provide high-nutrition forage • Nesting and loafing islands provide safety from predators such as
coyotes and foxes • Site is distant from power lines and other flight obstructions
Thanks to generous donations by Clark and Andy MacKenzie, Ralph and Louise Haberfeld, Jim and Becky Broderick, Earth Friends Wildlife Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Intermountain West Joint Venture, construction costs are covered for the Teton Science Schools’ trumpeter swan marsh project. Construction of the marshes began December 2006.
Critical aspects of the project still need financial support. Donations are needed to:
• Purchase and plant critical wetland plants • Plant willows along shorelines to provide security
cover • Purchase and install two swan nesting islands
For more information, or to make a donation, please contact Brenda Younkin or Doug Wachob at 307.734.8725 at the Conservation Research Center of Teton Science Schools.
