Joshua Bell will be the one remembered in 50 years’ time. – THE STRAD

As one of the world’s preeminent musicians, virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell makes his GTMF debut in the annual Gala Concert with the Festival Orchestra and Maestro Donald Runnicles. In this must-see event, Mr. Bell performs Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3, Piazzolla’s “Buenos Aires Summer” from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and one of the most beloved classical works ever—“Summer” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. A violinist for the ages, Joshua Bell’s gala performance will certainly be one of the season’s best.

2 BEETHOVEN’S SYMPHONY NO. 9 FRIDAY, JULY 8 | 8PM SATURDAY, JULY 9 | 6PM

The National [Collegiate Chorale] of Scotland was thrilling … Runnicles conducted much of the work at a cracking pace, and the choral attack was electrifying … we went home with their glorious sound ringing in our ears. – THE SCOTSMAN

The highlight of opening week, Maestro Runnicles, the National Collegiate Chorale of Scotland, several star soloists, and the Festival Orchestra join in an exciting and powerful performance of Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9. Experience the symphony’s riveting final movement “Ode to Joy” live, an unforgettable musical measure and one of classical music’s most exhilarating combinations of orchestra and chorus. 3 CLASSICAL CROSSOVER TRIO TIME FOR THREE WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 | 8PM

Simply put, they’re a knockout! I would recommend them not only for entertainment value, but also for anyone looking to see how all types of American music can develop, when life and passion such as this are breathed into it.

– SIR SIMON RATTLE

There is no better musical group to appear as the Festival’s first performance at the Pink Garter Theatre. This summer, experience classical music and cocktails in a club setting and hear what the rest of the country has been talking about! Classically trained trio Time for Three joyously defies musical genres. Mixing virtuosity and showmanship, violinists Nick Kendall and Nikki Chooi and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer perform music from Bach to Brahms and beyond, leaving audiences to savor every minute. This summer, the trio performs works from Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, as well as ingenious arrangements of popular artists such as the Beatles, Kanye West, Katy Perry, and Justin Timberlake.

Please note—admission to this concert is limited to adults, age 21 and older.

4 MASTERFUL VIOLINIST NICOLA BENEDETTI THURSDAY, JULY 21 | 8PM FRIDAY, JULY 22 | 8PM SATURDAY, JULY 23 | 6PM

Ms. Benedetti’s sound in the stratosphere of her register is almost improbably pure and gleaming; at times it resembled the supernatural song of a Theremin.

– THE NEW YORK TIMES

As one of classical music’s most transcendent and sought-after violinists, Nicola Benedetti will perform three times during her weeklong residency. With Donald Runnicles at the piano, Ms. Benedetti will perform Beethoven’s ethereal and final Violin Sonata on July 21. Ms. Benedetti concludes her residency in concert with the Festival Orchestra on July 22 and 23, performing a virtuosic Violin Concerto by the notable Hollywood film composer, Erich Korngold.

The American pianist Jonathan Biss is the most consistently interesting Beethovenist of his thirty-something generation; nobody else interrogates the score with such intensity, or infuses it with such electricity in performance. – INDEPENDENT

Amidst his comprehensive nine-year cycle of performing and recording Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas, master pianist Jonathan Biss joins the Festival in a weeklong residency. On August 10, Mr. Biss will perform a solo piano recital comprised of Beethoven sonatas before joining the Festival Orchestra and conductor James Conlon in Beethoven’s melodic Piano Concerto No. 2 (August 12 & 13). 6 CELLIST JOHANNES MOSER THURSDAY, JULY 14 | 8PM FRIDAY, JULY 15 | 8PM SATURDAY, JULY 16 | 6PM

Johannes Moser’s tone was big and warm where needed, and he proved himself capable of some Rostropovich-like wild abandon … he was consistently eloquent.

– THE TELEGRAPH

Amidst appearances in the world’s most elite venues, German-Canadian powerhouse cellist Johannes Moser takes the Walk Festival Hall stage for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme (July 15 & 16), a piece which awarded him the top prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Prior to his Festival Orchestra feature, Mr. Moser lends his rich and impassioned artistry to a chamber music performance of Mendelssohn’s Octet (July 14), in concert with violinist Karina Canellakis and the Festival Orchestra’s finest string musicians.

7 TWIN PIANISTS THE NAUGHTON SISTERS WEDNESDAY, JULY 27 | 6PM THURSDAY, JULY 28 | 8PM FRIDAY, JULY 29 | 8PM SATURDAY, JULY 30 | 6PM

An identical-twin, duo-piano team sounds suspiciously like a gimmick assuring fast fame for the mediocre, but the Naughton sisters proved that they are worthy of every ounce of success which comes their way. Their recital displayed stellar musicianship, technical mastery, and awe-inspiring artistry.

– SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER

Outstanding piano duo Christina and Michelle Naughton take residency during the week of July 26. They exercise their mastery over four days, beginning with an appearance in Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, featured in GTMF’s Free Family Orchestra concert (July 27). The following evening, they perform the electric Rachmaninoff Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos as part of the Thursday night Chamber Music program. Concluding their thrilling week of music, the Naughton’s highlight the weekend Festival Orchestra concerts with Poulenc’s acerbic and witty Concerto for Two Pianos (July 29 & 30).

The gift brought the Festival’s endowment funds to more than $10 million, and we have created The Sullivan Society in their honor. This society commemorates benefactors who create bequests, charitable trusts, and other planned gifts that leave lasting legacies for the Festival. Members of our Sullivan Society play a vital role in ensuring our long-term growth and fiscal stability.
