Taking on The Mighty Mac 49 times!!!

Senior Companion Wyman Flintoff walks 10,000 steps everyday, which comes in quite handy for his yearly

Labor Day walk across the Mackinaw Bridge. This year, the 79 year old marked his 49th time crossing! Wyman began walking with his wife in 1967, they strolled their children over the

bridge and he now walks it yearly with his grandsons. He has walked thru rain, sleet and even the after-effects of a far away earthquake. Not even a fractured hip, two knee replacements and heart surgery could keep him away. Amazing!

Ways to Wellness

Walktober has arrived!

Those who know me well are very aware of the fact that I do not like winter. And by “not liking” it, what I really mean is I

absolutely hate it and wish the temperature never dropped below 60 degrees. I am a summer girl through and through.

That being said, I do need to admit that there is something that is a little bit appealing to me about fall. I love the comfy jeans and sweatshirts and the color of the leaves changing. But, mostly what I love about fall is pumpkin donuts from Post Family Farm. Combined with some apple cider, it’s the best fall snack ever! Post Family Farm pumpkin donuts are seriously the best donuts I have ever had! But, all that cider and donuts mean I have to make some healthier choices to balance it out!

The other thing that I love about fall is walking in the cooler crisp air. October is a fantastic time to get outside to walk. The weather is cooler, the air is crisp, the trees are beautiful, and the parks are full of younger people playing soccer and football!

I encourage you all to get out and walk more this October. Each of our five senior centers will have a Walktober team. These teams consist of any member who wants to keep track of how much they walk in October. Team member scores are averaged together so the team with the most points at the end of the month receives the Walktober trophy!

Of course each participant wins because they are “taking steps” to get healthier by walking more in October. So, pull on your favorite cozy sweatshirt, lace up your shoes, and head outside to enjoy the benefits

of fall! And, walk off that pumpkin donut!

Walktober is something ANYONE at our centers can participate in. We have a program for those who walk every day, those who cannot walk as much and, those who cannot walk at all. The idea of the program is to encourage you to get moving more than you currently are. Those people who are not able to walk can do seated exercises with their upper body. Those who do not walk regularly, can start small–just 15 minutes at a time!

Here are some tips to get you started!

Set a goal for yourself. Don’t worry about starting small and making it bigger as you go!

Make a plan by setting the time of day and establishing a route.

Be safe and walk with a buddy, try to avoid uneven ground, wear reflective gear when needed.

Warm up and cool down properly by stretching.

Wear the right shoes and proper clothing.

Drink water – Your body uses water to help keep normal body temperature and to cool your muscles.

Go with a friend. This is always the best way to stay motivated and have fun.

Motivate yourself by taking along your favorite music to listen to or perhaps some motivational messages.

Sign up at your center and get your score sheet! Teams are now forming and I hope you will be joining us!

Be well!

Coordinator’s Corner

I have been having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I am planning for October already and have been putting it off I must admit! I definitely love summer but fall is so beautiful as well. We’re so blessed in Michigan to see the beautiful change of seasons. I think we tend to take them for granted sometimes instead of embracing each season. So, I encourage you to embrace this fall season. We will be embracing the fall season at the Center by continuing walk club on Wednesday mornings and participating in Walktober as well. There is more information regarding Walktober in this newsletter. We also have a fun new class call “Stories Alive” being offered though our lovely library in Lowell. It will meet for an hour and will provide a chance to hear stories, tell stories and share experiences. There will be music as well. The first class starts on Thursday, October 20 at 11:00. Come check it out! Flu shots will be offered by Walgreens on Thursday, October 13 from 10:00-11:00. There will be a sign up sheet at the Center. Otherwise you may call the Center to schedule a time, too. We have a lot of fun things planned at the Center in October. I look forward to seeing you here enjoying the food and activities while creating friendships and community together. Have a great October! ~Terra Bieneman

Special Person of the Month Doug Corlis

Doug Corlis was born in Marquette, Michigan. He grew up with two brothers and two sisters in Kingston, Michigan. One of his favorite, funny memories growing up was locking his younger sister in the chicken coop at his grandparent’s house! He also enjoyed playing basketball in the barn, baseball, and going fishing. Doug met his wife, Claudia through her cousin and was married to her for 45 years. They have three children and nine grandchildren. Doug worked as a maintenance supervisor for most of his life but also worked with heavy machinery and at a cemetery.

One thing that Doug has always wanted to do and has not is to go to Alaska. Doug enjoys playing cards, going fishing and helping his granddaughter and her husband with home repairs. He enjoys joking around and laughing as well. If he could go back to any age it would be 42, so he could change his decision to move from California and his county cemetery job where he could have retired after 10 more years. He really enjoys being a parent/grandparent and says the best part of this is feeling the joy and pride of when he sees them making the right choices in life and succeeding. The proudest moments in his life were when his children and granddaughter were born. Doug’s best piece of advice for living is to live life to the fullest. We welcomed Doug to the Center in July after he stopped by one evening to check out the root beer floats and music. It was great to see him come in the very next day for lunch. We are so happy that he has been coming and helping out ever since!

Heart to Heart With Jane

I have been here long enough now to have made relationships with the members. It’s a true blessing in my life to have this opportunity to know so many great people in my community. As we share stories, food and coffee, we can’t help but become one big family of friends. We have been fortunate to have gained new members over the past few months, but we are very saddened a few have passed away. As I am learning through this position, it is going to be very difficult when my friends are no longer with us. I also want to acknowledge those seniors who make the Sparta center a fun and exciting place to be. To all the seniors who participate in the activities we have planned and for all those who actively make suggestions, “thank you”. As fall is upon us, the leaves are changing, the beautiful colors are abundant, the football games are in full swing and the Halloween costume party is approaching. I can’t help but be thankful for this time of the year. The nip in the air is just what we need to be refreshed from such a hot and sticky summer. Walktober is this month and I look forward to taking several steps to better health with my senior friends. Let us make October an active and very memorable time of 2016. Here’s to warm cider, caramel apples and scary pumpkins. Let’s break out our sweat shirts and enjoy all fall has to offer together. Together, everything is so much better!

R.I.P. Angie

A very dear friend and wonderful person passed away on Friday August 26th. Mary “Angie” Mainville was 78 years old and lived an extraordinary life, living many years beyond what was expected. She was an active member with the Sparta Senior Neighbors and a friend to all. She enjoyed Bingo, cards, Rummikub, Sequence and just about any adventure that she could get to in her electric chair. The center will feel a void. We will miss Angie’s bright smile, warm heart, giving nature and humorous personality.

Giving back to a local teen with an inoperable

and cancerous brain tumor brought smiles and

hope. The Sparta Senior Neighbor members

reached into their pockets with generosity and

helped a Cedar Springs teen receive life saving

treatments.

COME ON IN! Euchre is back at the Sparta

Center. Join us every other Friday for some exciting and friendly games. Beginners Welcome.

We will give you help in learning.

Please come to the Sparta Center to meet our village manager and have lunch.

Helen resides in the Harvest

Way Community and is a

member of Senior Neighbors.

Her beloved dog Penny has

become a special fixture at the

center. Helen’s life began on

August 20, 1928. Helen Marie

Gould was born 6th of 7 chil-

dren to Guy and Flora Gould of Sand Lake, Michigan. Helen

grew up on a farm. As Helen’s life would take its twists and

turns, she somehow would find her way back to her farming

roots. Over the course of Helen’s young years growing up

on her parent’s navy bean farm, she lost her older brother

Gareld in a farming accident; he was only 17 years old. After

that family tragedy, another storm would blow in for the

Gould clan. Helen’s mother passed away from an infection

she endured since Helen’s birth when Helen was only 18

years old. Through the ordeal of her mother’s end of life,

Helen fell in love with a young man with whom she attended

Baptist Lake Grade School. Just after Helen’s mother passed

away, Harry and Helen Nelson were married on April 30,

1947 at the Ensley Center Baptist Church. The young couple

lived with their parents as Harry built their 1st home in

Grand Rapids. Harry worked at the Wolverine Paint and

Factory Company in Grand Rapids. They moved to their

home and started their family. Harry and Helen were

blessed with five children. After the

children started to grow, they decided it was time to move

back to the country. They bought a family farm in Ensley

Center. They felt at home and loved the solitude of country

living again. Harry continued to commute to his place of

employment in Grand Rapids, as well as run his farm.

Helen’s losses were not complete, as she would lose Harry

to heart disease in 1976. Helen was only 47 years old. Hel-

en was working at the Cedar Springs Nursing Center and

decided to move to Grand Rapids to work at Pine Rest. She

worked until age 60, retired and moved back to Ensley

Center to her country girl roots again. She eventually moved

to Florida and lived in a mobile home park with some of her

relatives. Always hard working, she worked part time in the

park. After dealing with a health ailment, she would be

called to return to her country community again. Sparta

would be a perfect place for Helen and Penny to call home.

Helen has never allowed her struggles to cause bitterness.

She lives her life to the fullest and greets each new day with

a smile. Helen is just another example of a strong woman I

am so very happy to know.
