Inside this issue: Be About Volunteering RSVP of Kent County 2019, Written by Eddie Harris, RSVP Director

Everyone can help improve their community. When you volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer

Program of Kent County (RSVP) you are giving yourself an opportunity to be counted, valued and appreciated as you impact and improve lives.

This year the RSVP of Kent County plans to connect with every resident age 55 and older in some way form or fashion. How will we achieve such an ambitious goal? With the help of people like you. We understand that some of us will volunteer and give our extra time for the sake of giving back. Others will utilize services from many organizations in Kent County to help them stay independent in their homes. Whether you are giving or receiving this year you will be impacting your community for the better. We have wonderful organizations that want to meet you. They want to get to know you and are excited to serve you. You are not only benefiting from their presence in your neighborhoods, they are benefiting from volunteers just like you who help them achieve their mission and their vision. When you join RSVP as a volunteer you are becoming part of a local group of over 100 volunteers that serve over 30 organizations and touch countless lives all throughout Kent County. You will meet new people and gain new experiences from your volunteerism. Because you are so giving, you receive an annual appreciation luncheon, discounts at local businesses, continued training and fun activities provided by RSVP. With RSVP there is no barrier to volunteering. We have a wide variety of opportunities and our staff is confident we can find a position that will not only fit you, but one that you will love. Because RSVP volunteers choose how, where, and how often they want to serve, you have control over your commitment and your experience. This is how we know you are going to love every minute of your experience with us. So, whether you have a love of children, reading, knitting, or working with law enforcement, we want to meet you. There is something special happening in Kent County. Don’t forget to RSVP!

HA HA HA HA HA HA

April is National Humor Month!

I think it’s funny that every month

has so many things we can

celebrate. And in April we can

celebrate National Humor Month! Well, that will be fun!

It’s always nice to have some humor happening around

us!

It seems April is a fitting month for this since we do start

the month with April Fools’ Day! Did I ever share with

you my favorite April Fools’ Day memory? I’ve been

writing these articles so long that I don’t remember

what I’ve told you!

My two brothers are both older than me. I should also

point out that I was always the “good” kid. They were

always in trouble, but I wasn’t! Anyway, one particular

April Fools’ morning, my mom walked into the kitchen

where a five gallon jug of drinking water sat on a

dispenser. This is the type of thing you see where the

jug is tipped upside down and sits on a stand where

you can dispense water directly into a cup. So, my

mom went about her daily task of filling the coffee pot,

and whatever else she did. Eventually she realized that

the water jug she had used to brew her coffee was full

of goldfish swimming around. My mom still talks about

that April Fools’ prank my brothers played on her! It

was so funny!

It makes sense to me then that we start National Humor

Month with April Fools’ Day! Humor can be such an

important way to deal with the challenges life throws

our way. I’ve heard it said that sometimes you have to

laugh or cry, and it’s better to laugh until the tears are

running down your cheeks.

A website called, “www.humormonth.com” says this

about laughter:

“The curative power of laughter and its ability to relieve

debilitating stress and burnout may indeed be one of

the great medical discoveries of our times.”

That’s a powerful statement. The greatest medical

discovery of our times. Sure, laughter may not cure that

ails us, but it can make us feel better—and isn’t that

what we all want during challenging times—to feel a

little bit better, even for just a short time?

As we all know, depression is no laughing matter. And,

it is so prevalent among older adults. Physical

challenges and illnesses don’t always leave us feeling

like we should be laughing. There’s another old saying-

”Laughter is the best medicine!” This can be tough to

remember and tough to do. We should give ourselves

permission to find humor each day. Laugh at yourself or

with someone else, but know that it is okay to laugh

even during our darkest hours. In fact, research shows

that laughter decreases stress hormones and increases

immune cells and infection fighting antibodies. It also

triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural

feel good chemicals. You see—laughter really is a

medical miracle, and a wonderful medicine! It’s

inexpensive, easy to do, and there’s never a material

shortage!

As you look forward to the coming of spring—the

warmer temperatures, greener grass, longer days, and

fragrant flowers, remember to take time to stop and

smell the roses! Find something to laugh about and

share it with someone else. There’s no need to keep it

to yourself! We’re all better off if we can share a laugh

and a smile!

I’m hoping you find humor in whatever April Fool’s

jokes may be played on you. But, here’s hoping there’s

no goldfish in your drinking water! And on that note,

here’s a joke to help you practice laughing!

Two goldfish are in a tank. One looks at the other

and says, “You know how to drive this thing?”

Be Well!

From the Center Coordinator’s Desk It’s said that March snow will make the grass grow?? True or not, I guess one can always dream. I don’t remember a year where the weather was so up and down. But, in all seriousness, we should be thankful because as we see in other parts of the US and the world it could always be worse. This month we look forward to celebrating the 10 year anniversary at our present location on

Tuesday, April 9 as well as our volunteers on Tuesday, April 30. We set these dates aside to celebrate our longevity and to applaud those who make our center a better place when they give of their time and talents!

We hope that April will also bring nicer weather and a chance to get out and enjoy the sunshine! Thanks for coming to our Center! If there is something we can do for you, and it’s within our power to do so, I hope you come to me and together we can try to solve whatever it may be. I’ve heard that Together We

Can Achieve More! ~~ Jonathan ~~

Summer Fishing on the Big Lake Love to fish? Have an interest in fishing the Big Lake? Then do we have something for you! It’s a little expensive but we

thought if you knew in advance you could save up for this event. Last year we charter a boat for a Fishing Trip on Lake Michigan for $100 per person. We would like to do this again in August. So if you’re interested save those pennies, and look for the sign up sometime in June! If you should have questions please talk to Perry Hughes.

From the Coordinator’s Desk

Spring is in the air and at the Center! Newness and life are not only happening outside, but in the Center too. I have seen several new faces

join the Center as well as returning members who have been away for awhile. My wish is for you to know that everyone is welcome. We want each of you to feel at home. We offer a variety of activities daily. I would love it if you could make the most of each day. Perhaps you could make a point to try something new this month. Some new activities have been added and some activities are not new, but reintroducing them into your life could be great. New friendships may be made. Please know I value each and every one of you and love working with you. Have a Happy Spring!

Every year we serve over 4,000 older adults, helping them remain independent through our five Senior Neighbors Centers and a wide range of essential services.
