Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann is organised every four years by Kronberg Academy and Domenico- Gabrielli-Stiftung of Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin).

Vom 17. bis 23. November 2014 wird zum vierten Mal der Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann in Berlin in der Philharmonie ausgetragen.

Der internationale Cello-Wettbewerb wird alle vier Jahre von der Kronberg Academy und der Domenico-Gabrielli-Stiftung der Universität der Künste (UdK Berlin) in Berlin ausgerichtet. Zum ersten Mal fand er im Jahre 2002 aus Anlass des 100. Geburtstages von Emanuel Feuermann statt. Er soll dem Gedenken an den großen Künstler dienen und dazu beitragen, junge Begabungen zu entdecken und zu fördern.

Emanuel Feuermann gilt als einer der weltbesten Cellisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Neben seiner Karriere als Künstler war er, bis zu seiner Emigration 1933, mehrere Jahre Professor an der Hochschule für Musik Berlin, der heutigen UdK Berlin.

Sophie Feuermann, die Schwester und Klavierpartnerin Emanuel Feuermanns, und seine Witwe Eva Feuermann-Lehnsen haben der Kronberg Academy das alleinige Recht zugesprochen, den Wettbewerb unter dem Namen des großen Cellisten durchzuführen. Beide hatten die erste Austragung des Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann im November 2002 zum Anlass genommen, aus New York zum ersten Mal wieder nach Berlin zu reisen.

Die Gewinner der Wettbewerbe 2002 und 2006, Danjulo Ishizaka und Giorgi Kharadze, konnten den Preis aus den Händen des Schirmherrn Daniel Barenboim entgegennehmen.

From 17 to 23 November 2014, the fourth Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann cello competition will be held in Berlin’s Philharmonie.

The international competition is organised once every four years by Kronberg Academy and the Domenico Gabrielli Foundation at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin). It was first held in 2002 to mark the 100th anniversary of Emanuel Feuermann’s birth. The event is held in memory of the great artist and its aim is to help to discover and provide support for talented young cellists.

Emanuel Feuermann is said to have been one of the best cellists of the twentieth century. Alongside his artistic career, he taught at the Berlin Academy of Music – now the Berlin University of the Arts – for several years before emigrating in 1933.

Sophie Feuermann, Emanuel Feuermann’s sister and pianist, and his widow, Eva Feuermann-Lehnsen, have given Kronberg Academy the exclusive right to use the name of the great cellist for the competition. In November 2002 they travelled back from New York to Berlin for the first time in order to attend the first presentation of the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann.

The competition’s patron, Daniel Barenboim, was on hand to present the awards to the winners of the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann in 2002 and in 2006, Danjulo Ishizaka and Giorgi Kharadze.

Die Kronberg Academy veranstaltet gemeinsam mit der Domenico-Gabrielli-Stiftung der Universität der Künste Berlin in der Zeit vom 17. bis 23. November 2014 den vierten Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann. Der internationale Cello-Wett-bewerb ist für Cellisten aller Nationen offen, die 1986 oder später geboren sind.

BEwERBUNG

Die schriftliche Bewerbung muss bis spätestens 1. Juli 2014 beim Organisa tions büro eingegangen sein. Die Adresse lautet: Kronberg academy, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 6, 61476 Kronberg, Germany

Dem unterzeichneten Bewerbungsformular sind folgende Unterlagen beizufügen:

AUSwAHL DER TEILNEHMER

Anhand der eingesendeten Unterlagen und Bild-/Tonaufnahmen wird von Mit-gliedern der Jury eine Auswahl von 12 Teilnehmern getroffen. Diese Vorauswahl wird als erste Runde des Wettbewerbs aufgefasst. Das Ergebnis der ersten Runde wird den Bewerbern bis spätestens 1. September 2014 mitgeteilt.

REISE UND AUFENTHALT

Auf Wunsch bemüht sich das Organisationsbüro Teilnehmern, die eine Ein ladung zur zweiten Runde des Wettbewerbs erhalten haben, eine Unterkunft in Berlin zu vermitteln. Für die Reisekosten nach Berlin und zurück kommt der Teilnehmer in der Regel selbst auf. Teilnehmer, die für Deutschland ein Visum benötigen, sind gehalten, sich das Visum bei der Vertretung Deutschlands in ihrem Heimat-land zu beschaffen.Die Kronberg Academy ist bereit, in besonderen Fällen einen Beitrag zu den Reisekosten zu leisten. Ein entsprechender formloser Antrag ist schriftlich an die Kronberg Academy zu richten.

REIHENFoLGE

Die Wettbewerbsteilnehmer spielen in der Reihenfolge, wie sie durch das Los bestimmt wird. Diese Reihenfolge bleibt bis zum Ende des Wettbewerbs un-verändert. Bei der Auslosung am 17. november 2014 muss jeder Teilnehmer persönlich anwesend sein.

PIANISTEN UND PRoBEN

Der Wettbewerbsausschuss stellt den Teilnehmern auf Wunsch unentgeltlich einen Pianisten zu Verfügung. Vor der zweiten Runde erhält jeder Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit, mindestens zwei Stunden mit dem Pianisten zu proben. Es ist jedem Teilnehmer freigestellt, auch vor dem Wettbewerb bereits mit dem ihm zugeteilten Pianisten zu proben. Die Teilnehmer können auf eigene Kosten auch eigene Pianisten mitbringen. Vor dem Finale erhält jeder Finalist die Gelegenheit mit dem Orchester zu proben.

VERLAUF, oRT UND PRoGRAMM

Der Wettbewerb ist dreiteilig. Die Auswahl anhand der eingesendeten Aufnahmen und Bewerbungsunterlagen wird als erste Runde aufgefasst (vgl. Artikel IV). Die zweite und dritte Runde werden als öffentliche Veranstaltungen im Kammer-musiksaal der Philharmonie Berlin ausgetragen und haben Konzertcharakter. In der dritten Runde müssen alle Stücke auswendig gespielt werden. In der zweiten Runde ist die Reihenfolge innerhalb des Programms frei.

Eine Aufnahme ist als DVD PAL/NTSC, ungeschnitten und nicht älter als ein Jahr, einzusenden bis spätestens 1. Juli 2014 mit folgenden Stücken:

1 Brett dean: auftragswerk Dieses Werk ist eigens für den Wettbewerb komponiert. Die Bewerber erhalten die Noten zwei Monate vor Beginn des Wettbewerbs.2 ludwig van Beethoven: Eine Sonate für Klavier und Violoncello (op. 5 nr. 1 oder nr. 2, op. 69, op. 102 nr. 1 oder nr. 2) oder ein Variationenwerk für Klavier und Violoncello (op. 66, WoO 45, WoO 46) (Alle Sätze sind ohne Wiederholungen zu spielen)3 Werk/e nach Wahl. Auch einzelne Sätze möglich. Keine Werke der ersten Runde.

Für das Werk von Beethoven und das/die Werk/e freier Wahl stehen insgesamt 50 Minuten Auftrittszeit zur Verfügung.

Der Wettbewerb legt einen besonderen Schwerpunkt auf die weiterführende Ver-mittlung von Konzerten, insbesondere von Konzerten mit Orchester für den/die Preisträger. Für die Vermittlung der Konzerte ist ein Gesamtetat von 10.000 Eur vorgesehen. Ein Rechtsanspruch auf Auftritte besteht nicht.

PREISVERLEIHUNG, PREISTRäGERKoNzERT UND ABScHLUSSKoNzERT

Die Bekanntgabe der Ergebnisse erfolgt nach der jeweiligen Runde. Am 22. november 2014 findet ein Preisträgerkonzert an der UdK Berlin im Joseph-Joachim-Konzertsaal statt, bei dem ausgewählte Preisträger auftreten. Die Auswahl trifft die Jury.

Die Vergabe des Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann findet am 23. november 2014 im Rahmen des Abschlusskonzertes mit der Kammerakademie Potsdam unter der Leitung von Christoph Poppen im Kammermusiksaal der Philharmonie Berlin statt. Beim Preisträger- und beim Abschlusskonzert treten die Preisträger unentgeltlich auf.

REcHTE

Die Veranstalter des Wettbewerbs haben das uneingeschränkte Recht, die Wett-bewerbsauftritte und das Abschlusskonzert in Funk und Fernsehen zu übertragen, auf Tonträger aufzunehmen, zu filmen und für CDs mitzuschneiden, ohne den Teilnehmern und Preisträgern ein Honorar zu zahlen. Mit der Teilnahme akzep-tiert der Bewerber die Regeln. Der Rechtsweg ist ausgeschlossen.

The international cello competition is open to cellists of any nationality who were born in or after 1986.

SELEcTIoN oF PARTIcIPANTS

Based on the documents and video recordings, members of the jury will select 12 participants. This pre-selection is considered the first round of the competition. The applicants will be informed of the results of the first round by 1 September 2014 at the latest.

TRAVEL AND AccoMMoDATIoN

On request, the organisational office will endeavour to arrange accommodation in Berlin for participants who are invited to take part in the second round. Partici-pants are responsible for their own travel expenses to and from Berlin. Those who require a visa for Germany are advised to obtain the visa from the German Consulate in their country of residence. Kronberg Academy is willing to provide assistance with travel expenses in special cases. Requests for assistance should be submitted in writing to Kronberg Academy.

oRDER oF PERFoRMANcE

Lots will be drawn to decide the order in which the participants will perform. The order of performance will remain unchanged throughout the competition. Each participant must be present when the lots are drawn on 17 november 2014.

PIANo AccoMPANISTS AND REHEARSALS

On request, the competition committee will provide a pianist for each com-petitor free of charge. Each competitor will be given the opportunity to spend at least two hours rehearsing with the pianist prior to the second round. It is left to the competitors’ discretion whether they also wish to rehearse with the pianists assigned to them before the competition. Competitors may also bring their own pianist at their own expense. Prior to the final round, each finalist will have an opportunity to rehearse with the orchestra.

ScHEDULE, PLAcE AND PRoGRAMME

The competition is divided into three parts. The pre-selection made on the basis of the submitted video recordings and application package is considered the first round (see section IV above). The second and third rounds will be held in the Kammermusiksaal at the Philharmonie in Berlin and will take the form of a public performance. In the third round all pieces must played by heart. Com-petitors choose their own sequence of compositions for the second round.

1 Brett dean: Commissioned work This work has been especially composed for the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuer- mann 2014. Applicants will receive the sheet music two months before the start of the competition.2 ludwig van Beethoven: One Sonata for piano and violoncello (Op 5 no 1 or no 2, Op 69, Op 102 no 1 or no 2) or one of the Variations for piano and violoncello (Op 66, WoO 45, WoO 46) (All movements are to be played without repetitions.)3 One or more compositions of the competitor’s choice. Single movements may also be performed. No work from first round may be played.

No more than 50 minutes in total are allowed for the performance of the work by Beethoven and the work(s) of the competitor’s choice.

AwARD cEREMoNy, PRIzEwINNERS’ coNcERT AND FINAL coNcERT

The results will be announced at the end of each round. On 22 november 2014 selected prizewinners will take part in the prizewinner’s concert at the Berlin University of the Arts in the Joseph-Joachim-Konzertsaal. The selection will be made by the jury.

The Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann will be awarded on 23 november 2014 during the final concert with the Kammerakademie Potsdam in the Kammer-musiksaal at the Philharmonie in Berlin. The winners will not be paid a fee for their performance in the prizewinners’ concerts or the final concert.

RIGHTS

The competition organiser has the unlimited right to broadcast the competition performances and the final concert on television and radio, and to record per-formances on tape, film, CD and any other media without any payment to the competitors or prizewinners. Participation in the competition shall indicate the competitor’s acceptance of the rules. In case of any dispute, the German edition of the rules shall prevail.
