WHAT’S INSIDE

GRAND PERFORMANCES 2012 ANNUAL REPORT | 3

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF GRAND PERFORMANCES: We are proud to share our 2012 annual report with you. For the past 26 years, Grand Performances has brought free public concerts and arts performances — from Chinese modern dance to the Grammy award-winning East Los Angeles band, Ozomatli — to the people of Los Angeles. In those years, we have earned the reputation of bringing together America’s most diverse audience.

The last decade has seen phenomenal growth in support of Grand Performances. The number of individuals who have contributed funds to support our activities has increased from less than a dozen in 2001 to more than a 1,000 in 2012 (see pages 15-16). In addition, hundreds more added personal contributions during performances by dropping their donations into our famous Red Buckets. Our annual report highlights our efficient use of your contributions in bringing outstanding live performances to the people of our city.

On behalf of our colleagues on the Board of Directors, we thank all the individual donors, businesses, foundations, and friends who supported our first 26 seasons. You make all this possible and ensure that Grand Performances can sustain the GRAND artistic program for which we have become nationally known.

Most importantly, we hope you will join us as audience members this coming season.

Sincerely yours,

Page 5: Grand Performances' 2012 Annual Report

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2012 was another momentous year for Grand Performances. We heard years ago that our work in the 1990s played a critical role in demystifying downtown well before a residential boom changed the area’s demographics. Audience members commented on the incredible role that Grand Performances plays in making L.A. the exciting and livable place that it is.

Fans and friends noted a season as “the best yet” so I want to mention season highlights, including the premier US performance of Nitin Sawhney with his entire band; the more than 100 chorus members and orchestral musicians filling the stage for the Haiti relief concert “A Symphony of Hope” and an evening of classically sung music composed by George Gershwin.

Compared to many performing arts organizations, we commit a smaller percentage of our total budget to marketing. But our efforts in 2012 still allowed us to reach deep into L.A.’s many communities. The communications team worked with key community leaders, executed an efficient and targeted social media strategy, and expanded important partnerships with local media outlets.

Outside of California Plaza, we also lent curatorial and production expertise to colleagues involved in performances at El Mercado de la Paloma, and for the inaugural weekend of the new Grand Park located between the Hahn Hall of Administration and the Mosk County Court House.

WELCOME We are proud of Grand Performances’ history of presenting

world-class touring artists, including many who have had their North American, United States, California or Los Angeles premiers on our stage. When people realize we offer this standard of performances year-in and year-out for FREE, they marvel. Our board is committed to maintaining and growing both the quantity and the quality of presentations while building audiences from every sector of the community.

For nearly a decade, I have been the State Assembly’s appointee to the California Arts Council. From this vantage point, I know the arts provide incredible services in venues throughout the state. I know that our state is full of artists and arts organizations dedicated to serving people no matter where they live.

With the support Grand Performances receives, we proudly prove that people from all socio-economic groups want quality arts experiences in their lives, and in the lives of their children. Our surveys show that the 18.9% of audience members who annually earn less than $25,000 is nearly equal to those 20.2% who earn more than $100,000.

These audience members, regardless of background, demonstrate an interest in learning about the many cultures that make up our community, and about the art forms that are dear to their neighbors.

We offer this report so you can see the accomplishments, diverse funding sources, and budget that enable us to deliver quality performances to everyone regardless of financial ability. This report also serves as thanks to the many individuals, foundations, and local businesses that make it all possible. Enjoy this overview.

ANGELICA BERNAERT STAGE MANAGING FOR MARIACHI ROCK-O (AUG 2011)

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING The arts act as a gateway by offering us an opportunity to explore and celebrate not only our collective and individual histories, cultures, and communities, but ourselves as well. 2012 allowed us to travel to contemporary India and Iran through stunning modern music built upon a foundation of tradition (Nitin Sawhney and Niyaz/Strunz & Farah).

We felt the gentle caresses of Hawaiian guitars (Mastery and Legacy) this season, and witnessed the power of dance (Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu). With support provided from the National Endowment for the Arts, we explored the community of San Pedro through the accordion (The San Pedro Squeeze), and celebrated the poetry of living life in Los Angeles (Charles Bukowski, Tongue & Groove and the San Pedro Walking Tour). Many lyrics, messages, and calls to action were deeply meaningful (Nomadic Massive, Peace Go with you Gil, No Place to Go), while some were simply fun and engaging (Dirty Dancing Dance-A-Long, Lady Danville, The Belle Brigade).

The Grand Performances experience extended beyond performers and into deeply personal conversations about apartheid-era South Africa (Under African Skies), to living and workplace conditions for union and non-union laborers in China and the United States (The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks).

PROGRAMMING OVERVIEW Our 2012 season sparked many meaningful moments,

interpersonal connections, scenes, and stories during the 10 weeks of music, dance, film, and spoken word events. These experiences, both on our stages and in front of them, were the result of countless hours of lessons, rehearsals, planning, phone calls, e-mails, walking, talking, hauling, pushing, pulling, listening, asking, and answering. Grand Performances brings people together to tell stories through the presentation of art, and to create new ones for our audiences.

Page 11: Grand Performances' 2012 Annual Report

Grand Performances is L.A.’s gathering place where people from all walks of life come together to share rich moments of cultural awareness, inspiration, introspection, and celebration. This important exchange is what inspires many of our annual volunteers and donors to contribute their time, expertise, and dollars. Our dynamic working board continues to increase their investment in our programs and over the last two years, Grand Performances saw an increase of 46% in the number of individuals supporting the program with an annual contribution.

In 2012, area businesses increased their support including Ralphs/Food For Less and U.S Bank. New stakeholders include The Farhang Foundation and CarbonLite Industries who helped underwrite the August 4 performance of Strunz & Farah | Niyaz, and the law firm Skadden whose diversity committee sponsored a performance and hosted a reception for their summer interns.

Our season would not be possible without major support from local foundations like The James Irvine Foundation, California Community Foundation, and The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation.

And finally, we must recognize our good friend, philanthropist and photographer Michael Becker who, in addition to making a multi-year pledge to help found a major giving initiative, has included Grand Performances in his estate plans —our very first individual planned gift!

While there are continued challenges in developing resources for our program as artist fees and other costs escalate, we are grateful to all of our current supporters: foundations, corporations, government agencies, annual donors, and red bucketeers.

You are all GRAND!

NOON SHOWS (JULY – AUGUST) For the Friday noon shows, Grand Performances collaborated with The Satellite, a Silver Lake music venue, to program a series featuring up and coming indie rock, pop, and folk acts. The line-up, which included The Belle Brigade, Lady Danville and Haim, drew a new demographic to California Plaza, and garnered press attention from The Los Angeles Times and LAist.

Our Youth Music, Movement, Meaning (MMM) program was created to help break down barriers by introducing young people to our venue and deepening the concert-going experience for young, underserved audiences. In 2012, a total of 535 youth (ages 6 to 18) participated in our on- and off-site educational programs. Highlights included an artist residency held at Inner City Arts, a Skid Row-based organization that provides local youth with meaningful arts experiences. There, members of Pajaro de Nube provided a 90-minute introduction to the hyper-controlled Butoh dance form tailored to the participating teens.

Other participating community partners included A Place Called Home, Silver Lake Camps, Nishi Center in Little Tokyo, All Peoples Community Center – Summer Day Camp, Jefferson High School, and City Ballet of Los Angeles.

Our MMM program also has a component open to everyone, regardless of age. During the 2012 season we moderated discussions after six evening performances, inviting audience members to share their thoughts on the art they had just experienced.

“[This] was exactly what the accordion needed; four very different artists playing very different styles of music, showing off what the instrument is capable of when put in both the right hands, and in a credible setting.”

– Accordionist and participating artist Cory Pesaturo

FRIDAY, JULY 6 Grand Performances’ accordion festival drew a crowd of 2,400, which included stout devotees of the instrument, along with many a curious music lover. The morning of the show, Fox 11’s Good Day LA broadcasted live from California Plaza to give Angelenos a taste of the event. The following day, Grand Performances hosted a free “Community Squeeze” workshop for accordion players of all levels, from nine-year-olds to senior citizens!

THURSDAY & FRIDAY, JULY 12 & 13 Audiences were treated to stunningly beautiful performances by this Guadalajara, Mexico-based troupe. Their experimental music and dance piece, “Piedras de Agua” (Stones in Water), captured the surreal by juxtaposing the measured movements of Japanese Butoh with live soundscapes, and was adapted to take full advantage of Grand Performances’ spectacular WaterCourt. The show, supported in part by the James Irvine Foundation, garnered a rave review from the Los Angeles Times’ Laura Bleiberg, and made it to her list of Best Dance for 2012. According to audience surveys, 50% of attendees were Latino and nearly 40% were first-time Grand Performances patrons.

FRIDAY, JULY 20 Working closely with producer Jonathan Rudnick, co-founder of Giant Step, Grand Performances gathered 28 artists for an incredible multi-media event honoring the life and work of Gil Scott Heron through readings, video clips, and spoken word.

In addition to drawing more than 3,000 people (one of the largest audiences of the summer), the spirit of the evening also generated an active and inspired Facebook community for weeks after the event.

2012 GRAND PERFORMANCES’ FUNDRAISER

VAMOS AL MAMBO! SATURDAY, JULY 21 This tenth anniversary gala preceding the ¡Vamos al Mambo! performance was our most successful to date, raising more than $50,000 in support of our programs. Dressed in their tropical finery, more than 300 fundraiser guests sipped mojitos, enjoyed an array of Cuban-influenced cuisine, and swayed under the stars, celebrating the legendary musician Israel “Cachao” Lopez, widely credited for inventing the mambo.

REBRANDING In 2012, our communications team worked with Distinc, a Pasadena-based graphic design firm, to refresh our public face, and make it more reflective of the experience Angelenos have come to expect from us. The new look focused on a more unified and visually compelling identity for the organization. By exploiting GRAND as an adjective and repeatedly using the term to talk about the programming, the audience and the experiences, we aimed to create a greater sense of connection between Grand Performances and our many supporters and fans.
