    PREFACE

Short History of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Nevada

In July 1863, Washoe Lodge appointed a Committee of Correspondence relative to the formation of a Grand Lodge of Freemasons in the then Territory of Nevada. In November 1864, Virginia Lodge and Escurial Lodge appointed a joint committee for the same purpose. This activity was noted by the Virginia Daily Union on November 16, 1864, when it said: “The Masonic Fraternity of this state are agitating the propriety of establishing a Grand Lodge of the Order.” As a result of this latter movement, five of the eight chartered Lodges in the state united in calling a convention for Monday, January 16, 1865, having adopted the following Resolutions of Organization: WHEREAS, The subject of organizing a Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, in

the State of Nevada has been agitated: Resolved, That it is the opinion of this Lodge, that it is expedient, advisable and desirable

that a grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons be at once organized in the State of Nevada. Resolved, That if five chartered Lodges within the State, adopt similar resolutions to the foregoing, that a Convention of the Lodges of Free and Accepted Masons within the State of Nevada, convene at the Masonic Hall, in Virginia City on Monday, the sixteenth day of January , A. L. 5865, A. D. 1865, at eleven o’clock A. M., for the purpose of organizing a Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in the State of Nevada; each Lodge to be represented by its Masters and Wardens, whose Charter shall be their credentials.

The following Lodges ultimately adopted the Resolutions of Organization and the convention convened in Virginia City on January 16, 1865, in conformity therewith: Virginia Lodge No. 16: chartered May 14, 1863 Escurial Lodge No. 17: chartered October 13, 1864 Carson Lodge No. 154: chartered May 15, 1862 Washoe Lodge No. 157: chartered May 15, 1863 Silver City Lodge No. 163: chartered May 15, 1863 Silver star Lodge No. 165: chartered October 13, 1864 Esmeralda Lodge No. 170: chartered October 15, 1864 At this convention, seven Lodges were represented: Carson Lodge, Washoe Lodge, Virginia Lodge, Silver City Lodge (now Amity Lodge), Silver Star Lodge, Esmeralda Lodge and Escurial Lodge. Lander Lodge was not represented, probably on account of distance, but readily endorsed the work of the Convention. All these Lodges were holding California registry charters. The convention, on the first day, adopted a constitution, elected and installed a full corps of Grand Lodge Officers and then adjourned sine die. The Virginia Daily Union of January 17, 1865, reported the proceedings of the convention as follows:

MASONIC GRAND LODGE – A Convention of delegates from the various Masonic

Lodges in the State met in this city yesterday, to organize a Grand Lodge of Masons for the State of Nevada. Six Lodges were represented. Two more, making all the Lodges in the State are expected by this morning’s stage. The Convention organized by the election of P. M. Geo. W. Hopkins, President and P. M. Chas. H. Fish, Secretary. Heretofore, the Lodges in this State have worked under charters received form the Grand Lodge of California, to which they always felt themselves to be but a temporary appendage. Nevada having assumed her place among the sovereign States; the Masons within her borders wish also to take their proper position; and be represented among their sister Grand Lodges of the other States and countries. A Grand Lodge of symbolic masonry is a supreme body, owing allegiance to no other body or code of laws except the ancient usages and landmarks of the Order, and notwithstanding the fact that there exist over eighty of these grand bodies, each supreme in itself, responsible to no superior power, yet from its foundation in its present form, under the direction of Solomon, King of Israel, no change has been made in the workings of the Order, and no Grand Lodge would dare to infringe on those ancient landmarks and usages which have been handed down for ages in their present form may Masonry ever be the pure institution which has thus far proved itself, surviving the downfall of dynasties and kingdoms, a blessing to its members.

The Grand Lodge was opened in ample form, for the first time, Tuesday morning, January 17, 1865. The first annual grand communication was held October 10, 1865. By the fires of May 19, 1875, and October 26, 1875, in Virginia City, Nevada, the office of the Grand Secretary, together with the large and valuable library of the Grand Lodge were entirely destroyed. On account of the wide extent of the latter fire, no annual communication of the Grand Lodge was held in 1875.

    Masonic Code

Several previous editions of the Masonic Code made their appearance over the years after 1865. Grand Secretary Edward D. Vanderlieth prepared and annotated a compilation in 1911. This publication was revised by Frank R. King in 1928. A revised edition was prepared by a committee on Revision in 1953, which was sporadically maintained from that date. In 1967, the Grand Master appointed a Special Committee on Code Review and Revision, which special committee was reappointed in 1968 and 1969 to continue and complete its work. The Special Committee reported in 1969 and $1,000 was appropriated for printing 150 copies of the revised Masonic Code for study use in 1 year before final printing. In 1998, the Grand Lodge at its 134th Annual communication, by Emergent Resolution adopted a revised format of the Code. 1. Objectives of the Special Committee.

Mason written law, like other law, to be just and effective must be accessible and certain. The previous “Masonic Code,” the product of over 100 years of legislation, poorly organized, indifferently annotated and incompletely indexed, did not serve the demand for accessibility and certainty. Upon assuming its labors, the Special Committee determined that its main obj
