• The school was in the second round of the playoffs for football, so there was a lot of decorations for the team around the school

• A lot of motivational signs hanging on the walls

• Posters about upcoming school meetings and performances like the upcoming musical Footloose.

Emily Lewis

• Teaches Spanish 1 three hours a day• Teaches ESL one hour a day• Graduated from Michigan State University in

2006 • Did her teaching internship at Northview High

• The school uses the book Buen Viaje• Not a whole lot book work• Daily routine of warm up• A lot of activities for students to enjoy and be

involved in with low stress

Support Services• Four full time counselors that are available at all times– Pregnancy– Schedule conflicts more recently because of the

change to trimesters – Substance abuse– Time management (school play and lots of HW)

• Social worker at all times• Workers that assist students with speech and vision (blind)

issues• Post Secondary for Special Education

Counselor and FL Program• The counselor that I spoke with used to be a Spanish

teacher• Was in charge of the AP Spanish department at Grand

Ledge High School• She enjoys talking with the other Spanish teachers about

techniques and how the teaching of language is different now

• As for “steering students into foreign language,” if students are not doing well in English class in the middle school, then they do not recommend them to do a different language in high school

Grand Ledge Student Body

• About 17,080 students attend GLHS• Not very diverse. There is an ESL program,

but it is not very big. My teacher only has five students in her classroom. The make up of the ESL students is Central America and Africa

• About 45% go to a four year college• About 45% go to a two year college

Drop Out Rate• Right now, the drop out rate is not very bad• However with the change to the Michigan Merit Program

coming up first class is the sophomores now • There isn’t an option for students to graduate in five years• They only have four years to complete a degree, and have

to take science and math• She doesn’t think its fair for the students that just are not

math and science students – What about students that are planning to work for

their dad
