The old order changeth, yielding place to new

(And God fulfils himself in many ways….)

As we near the end of this liturgical year, I look forward to the beginning of Advent.

It is the season of awaiting the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ at Christmas.

It is so easy to get caught in the rush of this time of year. We often hear “Keep Christ In Christmas” in our Knights of Columbus programs.

Let that not be an empty phrase, but rather let us keep it as our focus. My prayer for Brother Knights and their families:

May we really focus on Christ in this season of peace and forgiveness

Mission Statement

We, the Knights of Columbus, St. Paul the Apostle Council 9652, strive to deepen our relation-ship with Christ and each other by promoting God’s work. We support our

Bishop, Priests and Community by holding fast to our mission as Catholic laymen.

We provide support to widows and children of deceased members who die an untimely death, and foster fraternal spirit.

GRAND KNIGHT’S REMARKS Br. Ray Smith

Forgive us for not receiving your gift of life and heal us from the effects of the culture of death.

From: Alfred Lord Tennyson

Chaplain’s Remarks Father Leo Byrne

Dear Brother Knights,

A practical matter from the Chaplain this time.

I have made the decision to entrust more responsibility to the heads of meeting/groups when conducting

meetings at the church for the following reasons.

Meetings have been expected to end by 9:00 PM. I am not comfortable as pastor in putting a

“curfew” on your events/meetings. That is not the kind of parish I want to pastor.

Unexpected things arise and meetings and events at times inevitably run past 9:00 pm meaning the

person responsible (usually Kevin Dillon) may have to wait at the church for as much as an hour

in order to lock and arm the church. Meanwhile the group feels pressure to end more quickly in

order to vacate their area.

It is my belief that adults who are responsible for events/meetings are quite

capable of locking and arming the church when they are finished.

The head of a group/meeting is already the designated Fire Marshall during

their event. This might be an opportunity to review those responsibilities.

Fraternally, Father Leo Byrne

We should always be mindful, that the Lord will

guide us through our work & play in our daily

challenges. Remember, the Lord, is with us always.

We must rely on our faith. “Keep Christ at the

centre of your daily life”.

During the month of November remember our

veterans & active military. Our country has the

opportunity of freedom & democracy. Thank God.

The membership of Council 9652 at the time of

this report is 157 members. We have 86 Associate,

68 Insurance, & 3 Inactive members. The 9652

roster includes 21 Honorary Life, 7 Honorary & 3

Disabled members. Please, welcome into our coun-

cil, our newest member; Christian Rojas Gaspar &

his wife Melissa. Christian was sponsored by Omer

Guertin.

We have lost another member in October; Jacobus

“Jake” Oostrom; brother of Marie Baker. May God

bless him & family, at this time of loss.

I encourage all members, aware of any men within

our parish community of St. Paul’s, who shows in-

terest in becoming a member of the Knights of Co-

lumbus, to assist them in gaining info on who we

are & what we do for our parish & community. I

also encourage all members to keep me aware of

any personal contact info that changes, to keep our

records current.

The membership dues for 2017 will remain the

same. Billing notices will be sent out mid December.

Please keep yourself in “Good Standing”.

If you have concerns, please contact me.

Vivat Jesus !!

The Myriad Uses of ’UP’ and Puns

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.' If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.

It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

More uses of UP in the next Knightly News ….

Puns -- for the educated mind!

When you get a bladder infection....you know urine trouble.

I dropped out of the Communism class because of lousy Marx. [Uses of ‘UP’: Keith Fernandes (Vancouver); Puns: Nick DaCosta (England)]

At the recent CWL Annual Bazaar, Lyne Tuepah generously donated a

pair of Senators’ Hockey tickets for a raffle - proceeds to be shared be-

tween the CWL and the Knights. Dale Tuepah manned the raffle table.

The raffle raised $260, with $130 each to the CWL and the Knights

Bonjour!

This was my first week on campus as a full-time missionary with Catholic Christian Outreach at Concordia

University in Montreal. I couldn't be here if it wasn't for your generous support and prayers, so I want to say

thank you! I've been getting to know the students here and I am excited to be sharing the Gospel in this beauti-

ful historic city. This is all possible because of you!

Know that you are in my prayers, and please pray for the students here at Concordia. If you have any specific

prayer intentions, let me know and I would be honoured to pray for you. God bless you!

Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) is a university student movement dedicated to evangelization. CCO

teams are present on 12 university campuses across Canada to lead on-campus outreach. Students are invit-

Knightly News, November-December 2016 Pg. 6 Council 9652, Kingston, ON

The Basketball Free Throw (BBFT) Competition season will soon be upon us once again. At the end of November, I will be contacting our four parish schools to determine the morning or afternoon in January 2017 that we will visit each of them to conduct an in-school competition. I will also be contacting our Brother Knights in Council 7783 (Napanee) to see if they will require our assistance to conduct a competition at J.J. O'Neil CS. As soon as I have dates on the calendar, I will be ap-pealing to my Brother Knights to assist with the conduct of these competitions as judges and scor-ers.

I would like to remind you, Brothers, that BBFT is a cornerstone of our Council Youth Program that depends totally on the support of Brother Knights. Since there are some new Knights in Council 9652 who may like to become involved, I would like to provide some brief background and an expla-nation of why we conduct our BBFT the way we do in Council 9652 before I seek the support of vol-unteers to assist with the conduct of the in-school competitions.

In 2008 we took a deliberate decision to conduct our BBFT competition in our catholic schools dur-ing the school day to increase the number of boys and girls participating. In spite of approaching nine local elementary schools the previous year, we were simply no longer able to convince children between the ages of nine and fourteen to give up part of a Saturday to shoot baskets with us and, as a result, BBFT was quickly becoming a memory. So, with some coaching from Brother Bill Cop-pens whose daughter-in-law Pamela taught at St Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School, we tried a new formula to integrate our competition into the school curriculum as an element of physical edu-cation during basketball season.

In January 2008, we approached the four parish Catholic Schools at the start of their basketball sea-son. Only St Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School (CS) responded positively that first year and a total of 53 children participated. In 2009 we added Mother Teresa CS and a total of 187 children participated. In 2010, we were delighted to add Archbishop O’Sullivan CS to the list of schools par-ticipating, and we counted 243 children participating. In 2013, Council 7883 in Napanee asked us to help them reintroduce BBFT to J.J. O'Neill CS (Brother Ian Stuart was the school principal at the time) and our participation reached 282. In 2013, St John XXIII CS joined the list of participating schools, further boosting participation. In short, with a little effort and the strong support of an out-standing cadre of Brother Knights from Council 9652, I believe we now conduct one of the most suc-cessful BBFT competitions in the region.

Brother Knights sometimes ask why we go to the effort of conducting the BBFT competition. This is a reasonable question -- after all, it takes at least ten Knights to conduct each competition. What’s in it for us? I am firmly convinced that there are several very good reasons to continue to support the BBFT:

First, this is an important KofC activity. BBFT counts as a major youth activity toward our Council’s eligibility for the Columbian Award and, ultimately, the prestigious Star Council Award each year.

Page 7: GRAND KNIGHT S REMARKS Br. Ray Smithkofc9652.com/docs/newsletter/2016/Knightly_News_Nov_Dec_2016.pdf · Dec: Leona and John Ruckpaul (55 yrs on the 16th) ... 15 years Gerald Shewchuk

Knightly News, November-December 2016 Pg. 7 Council 9652, Kingston, ON

Second, BBFT deepens our working relationship with our parish schools (both teachers and stu-dents), giving us more opportunity to contribute positively to the development of our youth and giving our youth a positive awareness of the Knights of Columbus. For example, earlier this month a local grocery store manager generously supported our spaghetti dinner, saying he still remembers the Knights who conducted BBFT in his school. And two of our school principals remember fondly their own participation in BBFT. Those Knights who assist with the conduct of BBFT almost invariably remark how enjoyable it is to work with the children and how good they feel for helping to make a fun and healthy event available to our children by donating a morning or afternoon of their time.

Most importantly, BBFT is an outstanding fraternal activity which bonds our Council Knights more closely together in common cause. Last year alone, 20 Knights of Council 9652 donated more than 200 hours of their time in support of the planning and conduct of five council level BBFT competi-tions, and support to the District 93 competition.

Please respond generously with your time this year. And if you have never had the opportunity to assist with BBFT and would like to know more, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at: [email protected] or 613.634.4229.

Vivat Jesus!

Our council is proud to announce that our net income for participating in the 2016 Knights of Colum-

bus Ontario States Raffle was $2,148.65. Congratulations!

I hope you are ready to engage in another season. As you know this raffle is the show case for On-

tario Knights and it is hoped that all councils will participate. The major benefactors will be “The Ar-

thritis Society” and “Special Olympics”.

Ontario State intends to distribute the raffle tickets to the councils before Christmas but it depends

again upon the Supplier printing the tickets on time. We will keep you posted. The price will be

$5.00 per ticket. The cash cards will be replaced by cheques made out directly to the winners.

Our council has always supported this major charity fund raiser and we are now preparing for anoth-

er successful year. Brother Dale Tuepah will lead “Membership Sales” and Brother Howard Gallivan

will lead “Mall Sales”.

As for the Mall Sales, a request has been placed for several sales dates. It is their practice not to

allow us into the mall until January. We have put in a request to display a vehicle. Please remem-

ber, many working hands make the job easy. We have never had 100% participation. Let’s shoot

for that goal this upcoming year.

God bless and good luck!

The Pitfalls of Replacing Coverage

You know the old saying, “the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence,” but we all know that it rarely is. The same holds true when it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage offered by another company. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the “greener” grass on the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet — in some cases, a lot less. That’s why it pays to remember another old adage, “Read the fine print.”

There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of Columbus or with another company. I’ll focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing cov-erage here — pitfalls that an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention.

First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period — typically two years — after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your cur-rent coverage.

Second, it’s unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able to obtain with your existing contract. The two factors that determine how much you’ll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health. Certainly, you’re older now than you were when you took out your current coverage. There’s no way around that. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors can affect the amount of coverage you’ll get for your premium dollar.

If someone encourages you to replace — or worse, drop — your existing coverage, please call me. I’ll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest.

Editor’s Note Br. Aubert Pereira

First of all, a sincere apology from me on the lateness of this issue of Knightly News. My own schedule of a visit to my grandchildren, and a heavy schedule at my part time work left little time for the News-letter.

There is a new feature starting with this issue of Knightly News -- Quotes from Pope Francis. At the recent Diocesan Liturgy Conference, the organizer printed a number of quotes from our Pope on the re-verse of the programme. I thought it would be a good idea to include a few in our Newsletter. There were enough of the quotes to last several months. You will find the first batch on Pg. 9.

During these two months, there is the upcoming Parish Spaghetti Dinner, the Fourth Degree Christmas Social and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on the 8th December, celebrated with a Diocesan Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral.
