I cannot believe it is already time for the second issue of the Grand Guide. Where did the summer go? As I sit here writing this note to you, we are in the middle of so many exciting events, programs and projects, and we are looking forward to sharing our many fall and winter recreational opportunities for all of you to enjoy. We still want to hear from you regarding our programing efforts! Recreation Program Coordinator Stephanie Baumann wants to pack our newly opened Main Street Programming Center with all the activities and classes you want to take part in, so please let us hear from you. Please look through the pages of the Grand Guide and go online to sign up for programs you and your family will enjoy. It is easy to register and schedule your fall activities with us!

Westfield Parks & Recreation is also excited to be expanding our special event offerings. Along with the Movies in the Park series, Voices from the Past, and Fireside Tales this fall and winter, we are now hosting two additional special events: the Grand Junction Derby and Westfield in Lights. Joining our team is Amanda Jackson, our new Special Events Coordinator. Amanda, along with the Parks & Recreation staff and community volunteers, will continue the tradition of providing great family friendly events for all to enjoy. Please contact Amanda if you would like to get involved in any of our existing events or have suggestions for future ones, as we are always looking for input in how to best serve the community. All of our fall and winter events are featured throughout this edition of the Grand Guide, so mark your calendars and join us for one or all of the upcoming events.

I hope to see you there!

Yoga for Kidzyoga Kidz can help counter the many pressures that today’s children experience. yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s noncompetitive. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. By doing yoga, children exercise, play and connect more deeply with the inner self, and they develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. yoga Kidz brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface.

Introduction to Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLRs)Now that you have this great camera, it is time to get the most out of it. The more you understand about why a picture came out bad or good, the more often you will be able to take real photographs and not just snapshots. This class will consist of instruction, followed by a shooting session and will finish up by reviewing the images in order to apply what has been learned. More class details online.

Maximizing Your Point & ShootNow is the time to get serious about using your Point & Shoot Digital Camera. Taking better images is easier than you think. Today's digital cameras are very capable of taking great images when basic techniques are applied. This is a non-technical class that will give you a basic understanding of what it will take to go from taking snapshots to photographs. We will start with instruction followed by a shooting session to practice what you have learned. Then, we will download and review the images taken to determine why the good ones are good and why the bad ones are bad. More class details online.

Picture ManagementThe good news about digital photography is that you can now take hundreds of images without the high cost of film and processing. For some people, this is also the bad news. Now that you have taken all these great images, how do you store, organize and catalog them so you can find them years later. This class will show you ways to sort and organize your images in a way that is meaningful to you. We will explore various software options that are free along with other applications specifically for image management. More class details online.

COMMUNITy COMMITTEE:

The primary initiative of the Community Committee is par-ticipation in Plant a Row (PAR) for the Hungry. PAR is rooted in the gardeners’ tradition of sharing bountiful harvest with others. The plan is simple – we ask you to plant an additional row of vegetables, fruits, or herbs in your garden and deliver the harvest to one of our drop-off sites, and the donated produce will be delivered to local food pantries. Through PAR, citizens are able to truly be a part of their community and help those in need. In the last three years, well over two tons of fresh produce has been donated to local food pantries. Much of this produce came from the community garden planted by local children at the Westfield Farmers Market and from the PAR committee garden. The committee is always looking for active members to help plan, plant, and maintain the gardens, as well as promote the initiative throughout the community. Get involved in this wonderful program by joining the committee or simply by planting an extra row in your own garden!

Local Produce Drop-Off Site: Ameriana Bank, 3333 East SR 32, Westfield

FLORAL COMMITTEE:WIB’s inaugural committee organizes and participates in beautification projects such as planting the downtown planter boxes, Community Plant Day, the Floral Display Competition and more! A predominant color is selected each year to help provide unity throughout the community. This color is utilized in the hanging baskets and planters downtown, in the garden beds in the parks, and residents are encouraged to feature it in their own gardens. In the winter, the Floral Committee also coordinates the decoration of the downtown planters for the annual Westfield in Lights celebration and sponsors the downtown business decoration competition. Join us for our next meeting, and get involved in the 2014 initiatives!

WESTFIELD IN BLOOM: planting pride in our communityWestfield in Bloom (WIB) is a volunteer committee with a mission to instill a greater sense of civic pride and promote beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. WIB, in partnership with Westfield Parks & Recreation, is currently made up of four sub-committees, each with its own unique projects and goals: Floral, Heritage, Community, and Environmental Awareness. The committee is always looking for new members, and anyone is welcome to attend the meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Main Street Programming Center, 330 E. Main Street.

Do you have an interest in the history of Westfield? Join the Heritage Committee and get involved in making history come to life! The goal of this group is to combine resources with organizations such as the Westfield Washington Historical Society in an effort to heighten the community’s awareness of Westfield’s heritage. In 2013, the Heritage Committee will be hosting the third annual “Voices from the Past” living history walk. “Voices from the Past” is a unique way to learn about Westfield’s history through the lives of former citizens. Attendees are guided on a journey into the past through two historic cemeteries where they hear first person interpretations of some of Westfield’s historic citizens, portrayed by Westfield Playhouse actors. See page 13 for more information, or better yet – sign up to be a tour guide!

HERITAGE COMMITTEE

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS COMMITTEEThe EAC was formed to help promote an environmen-tally sustainable community by increasing environmental awareness in Westfield. In 2013, the EAC focused on water conservation education through hosting a series of workshops, as well as on growing the Adopt-a-Prairie program. Get involved in this great group and be a part of developing the 2014 initiatives!

Monon Trail Phase 6 and 7: A contract has been signed to begin the final design of the Monon Trail from State Road 32 to 216th Street. Phase 6 will go from State Road 32 to Monon Elementary School. This phase will include a cycle track along the west side of Wheeler Road, which will provide an area dedicated to bicycle commuters, resulting in less congestion on the multi-use trail. A trail head is also being planned at Monon Elementary School. Phase 7 will continue from the school to 216th Street and includes a small trail head in Hortonville. Stay tuned for announce-ments of community meetings as we continue this process of extending the Monon to link up with our neighbors to the north!

Monon Trail Tunnel at 161st Street: Preliminary construction for a future tunnel began July 15th on the Monon Trail at 161st Street, resulting in an approximate 90-day closure of the trail at this location. This closure will allow for completion of the framework of the future tunnel at this location, which will be necessary with the new interchange. Currently, 161st Street is closed to vehicular traffic. Taking advantage of this closure will allow for more efficient construc-tion scheduling and prevent an additional closure in the future. Once the trail is re-opened, you will not see any evidence of the tunnel, as the

framework will be below ground. When funding becomes available, the tunnel will be completed, providing Monon Trail users a safe crossing where they will not interact with vehicle traffic.

bike Loops: you may have seen signs around Westfield calling out Bike Loops with directional arrows. This is part of a new bicycling system which maps out and shares routes throughout Westfield that utilize multi-use trails, connector trails, and roadways. The loops are spe-cifically designed for

different difficulty levels from beginner to expert and span distances ranging from 1.85 to 33.3 miles. Please check our website for complete information on each loop before heading out. We are striving to be a great bicycling friend community.

Safe Routes to School Grant: A company has been chosen to develop a plan for a Safe Routes to School Program at Oak Trace Elementary School that was made possible by a grant awarded to the City by INDOT last fall. The City is working alongside the school, PTO, parents and Safety Official to create a plan for Oak Trace that can be used as a template in the other elementary schools. There will be more information coming soon as this wonderful program gets rolled out.
