Speaker's Corner - DirectorsThis week our meeting will be led by the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman.
Young Caymanian develops design for a lightweight solar generatorAs this is New Generations Month it is fitting to profile Sai Eccles, a young Caymanian studying forhis A Level exams with a big heart and big dreams. He has a strong interest in physics andchemistry and plans to study Chemical Engineering when he starts university next year. In betweenhis school work and studying for exams he and his friend have developed the plans for a lightweightsolar generator. They are trying to raise the £850 needed to build the prototype.
Sai says in theory, this prototype will be able to deliver 2700W of power (continuous) drawing energy from a 88 Ahbattery. This battery can be recharged fully in just under three hours (under adequate light conditions) and will be bestsuited to support low power items such as lights, phones and other relief equipment. Its relatively high power output still
makes it able to support more energy intensive appliances if need be e.g. ovens and irons). The GS1 differs from existingproducts on the market as it both light and maneuverable; making it much more practical to transport and deploy. Lowcosts also help us strive towards, one day, making them available to those most in need during times of crisis.
Sai is the son of Honorary Rotarian Dr. Sook Yin. In addition to this venture he and his friend have developed a socialnetworking site doddlr.com. You can find out more about Sai's current project, including plans and how you can be a partof the project by going to http://www.pleasefund.us/projects/lightweight-solar-generator.
Did You Know?In September, Rotary celebrates New Generations Month, reminding clubs of the ongoing need toprovide positive influences for youth and equip tomorrow's leaders.
The history of Rotary's work with youth dates back to the 1920s, when many clubs took part in an international eventknown as Boys' Week. The first Boys' Week was held in New York City in May 1920 by the Rotary Club of New York andother local organizations. The event was part of an effort to promote youth development in the areas of education, citizenship, health and hygiene, and vocation. This later became Boys and Girls Week. The RI Board of Directors voted to discontinue Rotary's official sponsorship of Boys and Girls' Week in 1956 in order tosupport new youth efforts, but it encouraged clubs to continue participating in local youth service initiatives.Rotary went on to create other programs for young people in the following decades, including Interact , Rotaract , and

Rotary went on to create other programs for young people in the following decades, including Interact , Rotaract , andRotary Youth Exchange .In 2010, New Generations Service became Rotary's fifth Avenue of Service. Rotarians recognize the positive change thatyouth and young adults implement through leadership development activities, community and international serviceprojects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.
New Generations Month - Interact SnapshotAs a part of New Generations month, each week we will provide a snapshot of a Rotary youthprogramme.Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs aresponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single gender or mixed, large or small. They candraw from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the samecommunity. Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of whichfurthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop anetwork of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of• Developing leadership skills and personal integrity• Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others• Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work• Advancing international understanding and goodwillAs one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than10,700 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwidephenomenon. Almost 200,000 young people are involved in Interact.
There are no Interact clubs in the Cayman Islands but Rotary Sunrise is exploring the feasibility of chartering one.
