MEET OUR 2017 ATHENAS

“The summer before my senior year of college, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I had a total thyroidectomy and underwent treatment for the next year, still managing to graduate. Just over a year after the diagnosis, I was declared cancer free. The celebration only last a few months, as I was back in the hospital and after a barrage of tests, I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. At this point, I felt like something was pulling me toward a career in healthcare. I decided to go back to nursing school, and completed my BSN while being in & out of the hospital. During nursing school, I saw many patients who were in worse situations than I was. I realized I didn’t want to let my health hold me back, and began being more physically active. I have since completed 8 half marathons, and my goal for the next year is to complete a full marathon. To celebrate 10 years cancer-free, I ran 10 10k’s in the last year.” - Jessi Cottrell

“I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in April of 2014. I underwent a double mastectomy, six rounds of nasty chemo, and seven weeks of radiation. I’m sure this story sounds familiar. As of now, I am healthy and trying to regain my strength. I have been athletic my whole life. I have done marathons, half-marathons, half-ironman races, century rides, and lots of competitive tennis. My surgeries left my right arm and chest very tight from the removal of lymph nodes and scar tissue build up. I still play tennis but not at the same level, which is hard to deal with! I am looking for a new way to challenge my abilities and the Rim to Rim to Rim adventure sounds like what I have been looking for. It is hard to accept that I will never be the athlete I was before, it would be great to connect with other strong survivors to find new ways to appreciate who I am now.” - Kelly Eastwood
