•Modern day tourism developed from the continental

grand tour of the 18th

and 19th

centuries.•The advent of mass transport in the early 20th century

created an upsurge in travel and a concurrent

development in mass tourism and the hospitality

industry .•10 per cent of the world's Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

derives from international tourism according to the World

Tourism Organization (WTO)

•In Africa; Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda stand out as

tourism-driven economies. With tourism being Ghana’s

largest foreign exchange earner, with revenues of over

$600 million, while tourism is crucial to Kenya’s economy;

generating half a million jobs, which account for 12% of 

the Kenyan economy.

•In Uganda, tourism is the second highest foreign

exchange earner next to coffee, generating $276 millionfrom 6,000 visitors between 1993 and 1996.

•Recognizing the potentials of tourism as a catalyst for

development, economic empowerment and social

change we are developing a framework for hospitality &

tourism activities and operations in the county.

•Hospitality & Tourism development is a crucial

component of the Bassa Integrated Development

Strategy (BIDS).

•As a first step in this process the county is forming a

Grand Bassa Tourism Office and a Tourism Council to

develop and oversee our unique tourist attractions.

•The County has also actively promoted and supported

the Dumboy Festival as a cultural tourism event

attracting hundreds of visitors each year.

• Hospitality & Tourism locations and activities are being

identified and development plans and projects are being

considered.

• A marketing plan and strategy are being developed

under the twin themes & slogans, “Discover Grand

Bassa” and “There is only one Bassa”.

•The Dumboy Festival is the vehicle through which the

County aims to develop a base for the tourist industry in

Bassa

• Local tour guides and activities personnel are being

trained. The county is also organizing training for

workers in the hospitality industry.

celebrating the heritage and culture of 

Grand Bassa County.

Live music, great food and activities for all.

Grand Bassa County offers spectacular scenery and variety in thedevelopment of hospitality and tourism. Often called Liberia’s

Garden of Eden Grand Bassa offers the following to any developer or

investor:

•A commitment to tourism and hospitality enshrined in the officialcounty motto, “Grand Bassa County, where the hospitality of the

nation begins”.

•Large tracts of County/Government owned land in strategic

locations, beaches, river and ocean views that is available ongenerous terms for long term lease or sale.

•Home to seven major unpolluted rivers accessible by road for

aquatic and nautical sports development, which is an easy and

eminently viable route of development and investment.
