Hello,

What terrible news with the passing of “Frank”from Flannagans. Our hearts go out to thefamily. What a wonderful turn out at the funeral, somany people from GA, showing just how manypeople liked “Frank”.

Our brilliant front cover picture this month, wassupplied to us by Robin Bonathan, capturing thefirework display last month in Alicante.

Hope everyone who went to the Gran AlacantFiestas enjoyed themselves. There was certainlya good turn out.

Another new feature starts this month. We willbe following the fortunes of Santa Pola FootballClub throughout the coming season. We at your Gran Alacant Advertisercontinue to bring you allof the news from theGran Alacant Councillor,Loreto Cascales, as we havesince May 2005. photo: May 2005

The people of Gran Alacant said,“can we have some trees?”and we got trees!!hundreds of them!!In fact almost a 4 kilometer length of

pavement and trees. Stretching from theschool, to the GA centre roundabout andon up the hill to the post office. What ascene it will be when they are all in leaf,We did ask, “no caterpillar pine treesplease” and so all of the trees planted are“tipuanas”, nice shady leafy trees withyellow flowers. There will be benches provided alongthese pavements. There have beenproblems with the old trees from the GACentre roundabout to the post office, where they were originally planted on topof water pipes. This has slowed downsome of the work, but all is now sorted.

As we go to print the next train providerhas not been decided upon. By the timeyou read this, you will probably know thenew operator.

The new supermarket being built between

the school and the GA centre, is not to bea bowling alley or similar.

No news on a starting date for the golfcourse.

Work on the closing in of the sportscentre has started, meaning thateverything will be able to take placeunder cover, in the shade, with a newplaying surface.

Meetings have taken place between theTown Hall and Baile buses, to improve allof the bus stops on the urbanisation. If atthe stops there is room, a proper stop withseating will be made.

A collaboration between the Town Halland the Association de Vecinos Residentsof Europe are to provide a moonlightsupper on the evening of August 6th,behind the library. This is the evening thata full moon will be in the sky and eachperson will be asked to bring their ownfood. Tell your family and friends tocontact the association and book a tableand chairs for a small donation.Tel: 609 932 578.

Gran Alacants first park should beunderway next month. The company to dothe work has been chosen..

Also starting in August, the new walkwayall along El Clot . This is yet another large

Page 5: Gran Alacant Advertiser Aug 09

project beginning. Many of the newprojects have to be finished by a certaindate or the final funding will not be given. This is why some of the projects have hadto be underway during ratherinconvenient times.

You may have seen council workmengoing around Gran Alacant taking downall of the untidy and unsightly postersthat people have put up and not takendown. One small poster has been put inits place, explaining that, any postersfound on posts or walls will receive atelephone call to the number on theposter, and the person concerned willreceive a fine..

Yet again we discussed the land in frontof the houses on the left as you go downthe beach from the post officeroundabout. Masa have in the past had ago at tidying it and will do so again. It isof course, NOT Masa that are causing itsuntidyness, nor indeed the TOWN Hall, butthe problem is caused by some people onGran Alacant and it is their responsibilitynot to keep spreading rubbish around.

We will be meeting the person at theTown Hall next month, in charge of theWorld Windsurfing Championships, to giveyou more information in our Septemberissue about what we can hope to see atthis prestigious event.

We were told at the meeting that theremay be even more news of more projectsto come in the future. We will of course, bring you news of them once we knowourselves.

The email to us about the possibility of abus station on GA and also a childrens

area around carabasi, are not in anyfuture plans, but will be underconsideration in the future.

Regards the re-routing of Baile buses. Ofcourse the Town Hall have no influenceover this, and the bus companys leafletswould have to be changed. It might be agood idea to pop into Baile buses officeand ask if this change in service could bepossible.

Other NewsYou will see that we have had moreemails this month about our beach,Carabasi Beach. This beach, as others between it, andtowards Alicante come under the ElcheCouncil. They as Santa Pola, have beenallocated money from the governmentwhich they are to put into the upgradingof their beach facilities. Carabasi beachwill remain closed off as there wereserious problems last summer when theambulance could not get down the roadto a very serious casualty. Work will beginon a raised walkway and otherfacilities. It may seem an odd time of theyear for much of this work to be carriedout, but the various councils in the areahave a deadline for all work to becompleted, or they will not receive thesubsidy. We are assured by one of the beach hutowners, that it will all be worth whilewhen we see the future improvements.

How nice to see on a Sunday, the bin lorrydoing its rounds and the road sweepingmen and ladies doing their best to keepeverywhere tidy.

SEX IN SANTA POLACITY!

Regular readers of the Advertiser willhave been following the progress ofGASP!, Gran Alacant's new amateurtheatre group. First they set aboutthe task of hacking their way throughSpanish bureaucracy in order to setup Santa Pola's first Englishspeaking official Association (“with

the brilliant assistance of LoretoCascales and her colleagues atSanta Pola council!” explained GASP's Secretary David Ashley thankfully),then they chose a play and gotrehearsals under way, and nowthey've selected the charities whowill benefit from their money-raisingefforts from this production. So wewent along to a rehearsal to see howthey're getting on ….

The play they're working on, “HabeasCorpus” is described as “a riotouscomedy by Alan Bennett”.Roger Keevil, the President of thegroup, who is also directing the

production, told us “It's a shame thetitle makes it look as if it's some sortof legal drama. Nothing could befurther from the truth!” In fact, theplay is a very funny send-up of thePermissive Society of the 1970s, andthe whole thing's about everybody'sobsession with sex - who's beengetting it, who hasn't, and thescandalous revelations that resultfrom all the naughty goings-on.

From the fun that the cast werehaving at rehearsal, as our photosshow, the subjects of illicit sex,boob-feeling, and unexpected babieslook set to provide plenty of laughsfor the audience. “Notthat there's anythingcrude ordistasteful,” Rogerhastened to assure us.“The humour ispitched very much atthe level of the Carry-On films of the time ora saucy seasidepostcard, with a fewdropped trousers forgood measure!”

“Habeas Corpus” will

be performed at Santa Pola's Casade Cultura Theatre in Calle Elche(we'll be adding the location to themap of Santa Pola at the back ofthe magazine) on Saturday 7th andSunday 8th November 2009.Tickets will be on sale fromSeptember from G.A. Homefindersin Gran Alacant and from OPIRentals in Gran Alacant and LaMarina, as well as from membersof GASP!

An introduction to Santa Pola Club de Futbol................By Kevin RendallFounded: 1980 - an amalgamation of UD Santa Pola and Athletico Santa PolaHome ground: Estadio Municipal Manolo Macia - Avenida Albacete,Santa Pola. Capacity: 3500 (1000 seated)Club colours: Red/White shirts, Blue shorts, Red socks.League status: Group 4 - Valencian Regional PreferenteManager: Domingo Grau President: Jose Manuel Gonzalez Rivas

Barely six weeks after their last competitive outing at the conclusion of the 2008/09 season, Santa PolaCF returned to pre season training in the final week of July. Much has changed in that short space oftime with the election of a new board of directors, major development work at the clubs home ground, one or two new faces on the playing staff and regular starters from last year leaving the club to seekfootball challenges elsewhere.

Once again Santa Pola will start their 2009/10 campaign in group 4 of the Valencian Preferente; seek-ing promotion to the National third division, which itself is divided into eighteen regional sections. Fromearly September to mid May 2010, Santa Pola will take on teams from around the southern Costa Blancafrom Horadada to Orihuela and up to Altea and El Campello north of Alicante.

As always at the start of a new season hopes are high, this year the optimism surrounding the club does-n’t appear to be misplaced. In his first month in charge, new club President Jose Manuel Gonzalez hasappointed Domingo Grau, himself no stranger to success, to the position of first team coach. As recentlyas 2005, a Grau inspired Santa Pola narrowly failed in their quest for promotion from the Tercera (third)division to the Segunda B (Second division B), just one tier beneath that in which the big boys of Her-cules Alicante and Elche ply their trades.

Already fantastically well supported locally, with crowd sizes regularly comparing well with the best inthe division, Gran Alacant, an integral part of the greater Santa Pola community can play its part too. Awarm welcome is assured for British fans, who are actively encouraged to come along to lend theirsupport to a football club noted for an attractive, passing style that at times last year had spectatorspurring.

Prior to the start of Preferente hostilities in September, Santa Pola will take on local opposition includ-ing Torrellano, Elche Ilicitano and Torrevieja in crucial pre-season friendlies to fine tune preparationsand their match fitness. For more details of forthcoming games, season tickets or match by match en-trance prices, call Kevin on 650 594 112, or, alternatively email [email protected] hope to see you there.

Resident in and around Santa Pola for over four years and a lifelongfootball nutcase I first began watching Santa Pola in 2006 and wasimmediately taken by the friendliness of the club and the kindness ofthe people involved with it. For a year or so I wrote of goings on in andaround Santa Pola in another local publication, these days my literary

efforts are now compiled for The Leader newspaper, for whom Idescribe Santa Pola matches, home and away.

Recently I was privileged to be invited to join the new Board of Direc-tors of Santa Pola FC, an opportunity I gratefully

accepted. Over the coming months, and thanks to the generosity ofBarry and Sandra, I’ll be bringing news and views from inside the club

to the Gran Alacant Advertiser readership in a serious ofregular monthly columns. Kevin Rendall

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch.

At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted it on the apple tray:

'Take only ONE. God is watching.'

Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table wasa large pile of chocolate chip cookies.

A child had written a note,

'Take all you want. God is watching the apples.'

What would happen if one of us dies in Spain

Ask yourselves these questions:

1. Would you know who to call in the first place?2. Would they know the Spanish system on funerals?

3. Would they be able to cope with local laws and regulations inSpain?

4. Normally funerals are held within 48hr´s. Would family havetime to get here?

5. Would funds be readily available to cover all costs?6. Could you cope with the above at the time of great stress?

Makes you think, doesn’t it?If you can not answer even one of these questions positively then

one of yourPriorities should be to contact SPN today for more information about

John was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry. She told him 'Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in less than 10 seconds,

AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!' The next morning John got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up

she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped inthe middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to thedriveway, and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brandnew bathroom scale. John has been missing since Friday. Hello welcome to the next installment of

Massage.

Indian Head Massage.

Indian head massage has been used forthousands of years to treat the mind andbody. In India Ayurvedic and traditionalmedicine is as important as orthodox medicine. It aims to treat the whole bodyso as to maintain a balance between thephysical, mental and spiritual. Indian headmassage uses and adapts classic Swedishmassage techniques for treating the scalp, face, neck and shoulders. It is extremelygood and effective for treating stress because it works on the areas of the bodymost affected e.g. shoulders, upper back, neck and head. In both my full body massages and the half body massage, I always’ include a head, neck and facemassage as head massage has a numberof benefits which include, increased jointmobility and flexibility in your neck, armsand shoulders. It reduces tension in the tissue, making them more flexible whichminimizes stress on bones and joints. Itimproves circulation removes waste in particular Lactic Acid. Petrissage movements on the neck and shoulders

helps reduce tension, releases tightness inoverworked and tense muscles. Stress reduction helps prevent stress inducedmuscle spasm in the back, neck and shoulders.

Buttock Massage and Exfoliation

Do you want a bottom like all the models? Then a buttock and exfoliation is the answer. This treatment consists of a 20minute workout on the muscles in yourbuttock, (Gluteus Medius, Gluteus Minimusand Gluteus Maximus) followed by a 10minute exfoliation of the skin to remove allthe dead cells. Clients who have had thistreatment have stated that they felt theirbuttocks were uplifted and felt clean afterwards.

Sports Massage. (This is not a treatment that I do)

Sports massage combines the use ofSwedish massage with additional more intensive techniques for the prevention andtreatment of sports injuries. It can be usedas part of a training program to help prevent injury, as part of a warm up for anevent such as a marathon and also as acool down after an event. Like other forms of massage, sport massage helps improve suppleness and

Hi Barry and Sandra,

Your reply in the June edition to my letter (enquiring aboutthe possibility of re-opening the pathway through El Clot),that this was an issue for Elche council rather than SantaPola, raises a serious point about the development of Gran Alacant, that occasionally issues affecting our town will fall outside of the control of our elected representatives. Howtherefore do we address this?

As another example in addition to the El Clot pathway, I would draw attention to the poorstate of the footpaths and indeed road on the approach to the beach. Although a major improvement has been made in the provision of additional car parking, the road throughthe sand dunes is a dust bowl. Is there no possibility of tarring this road and building properfootpaths that connect to the existing footpaths? The current situation is a danger to pedestrians as cars swerve to avoid the potholes and I do not accept that the current surfacing is more environmentally friendly. (I am now forced to use this route following theclosure of the El Clot pathway.)

Secondly, an issue for our council, are there any plans to build a bus station at the GA centre? Currently we have to travel to Santa Pola or Alicante and then change buses, which don't necessarily timetable conveniently, in order to travel onwards to Torrevieja, LaMarina, Guardamar, Cartegena, Murcia etc. A bus station near the GA centre would encourage buses passing along the N332 to stop here thus increasing the accessibility ofour town.

And with regards to the existing Alicante-Santa Pola Baile bus service, would it be possiblefor this service to use Avenida Noruega and Avenida Escandinava via the new roundaboutproviding stops along the way, instead of going along Avenida Mediterraneo which is unpopulated. Such a service while not inconveniencing anyone else on the existing route, would be much more convenient to the residents "down the hill" some of whom are over 25minutes walk from the existing stop.

And finally, when if ever, can we expect a childrens play park to be built in the vicinity of theschool or Carabasi complex?

I was just thinking about paragraphs 1 and 2 and surely the point here is that while thecouncillors of Santa Pola Council have no direct control, they are nevertheless members ofa politcal party which has members in the neighbouring council and so could raise our issues at party level and have the other councillors from Elche take it up on our behalf. Imean issues transcending council boundaries is not unique to Spain and surely that is howit would be dealt with back in the UK / Ireland. Fancy bringing it up with them and see whatthey have to say?

Also, someone told me they had heard a rumour that the new commercial building half wayalong Avenida Noruega (sort of opposite the new park) was actually going to be a cinema/bowling alley. I was sceptical and having walked past and had a nosey I'm unconvinced that the layout of the buidling would lend itself to such a use. Any insideknowledge you don't mind sharing?

Cheers, Cormac

Hi Barry

It was with interest, as always, that I read the July issue of the Advertiser

However I was a little disappointed not to see someupdate on the issue I had asked about previously

That is the eyesore that is at the end of our streetCalle Canarias F32, the area opposite Frankieʼs Bar.

It is the open area that is being used as a toilet facility for it seems like every dog in GA.

It looks like there is a lot of improvements going on in GA at the moment which is wonderful but I donʼt think Masa are doing anything about clearing up/fencing off this area

Maybe I am wrong,it would be nice if I was, as I havenʼt been out since April but somehowI doubt it

Could you make this a priority the next time you speak to Loreto and ask if she could putsome pressure on Masa to do something

I know you are inundated with requests like this but if you could help at all I would be mostgrateful

Kind Regards Fiona

Hi Barry and SandraHave you any idea if and when

the access road to the carrabassi beach will be reopened,i know that it is in poor shape but for a lot ofthe not so young it is now an impossible trek to thebeach which is a shame for those with walking diffi-culties, angina etc.Would it be too expensive to gradethe road as was done a few years back and retain thenew carpark as an overflow parking area.

My wife and l enjoy reading your Magazine every month and long may it continue.

Cheers Maggie & Chris

Welcome to the monthly computer column compiled by Dave the Computerman

Windows 7Windows 7 is now available to download from the Microsoft website, and is available for testing. The official version will be made available on October 22nd2009, and will begin to appear on new computers from this date. It is also possible to pre-order a copy from Amazon or PCWorld at hugely discountedprices, and I would recommend all users who wish to change to the new operating system to do so. Sadly there is no upgrade path from Windows XP, butVista is upgradeable. This means that XP users will have to back up everything, format the disc and then install 7.

Google mailIt is possible to access Google mail using outlook express using. Log into your account and click settings, then click the forwarding and pop tab. Enable pop forall mail. A copy of all your mail will be kept on Google’s servers as a backup incase of your computer failing. Click the configuration instructions link to find outhow to connect to the Google mail pop server with your mail client and follow theinstructions. You can check your other email accounts in Google mail as well. This allows youto centralise all your email accounts instead of signing in to them separately. They add misspelled keywords such as"licnese" or "obbama" into pages on compromisedwebsites. Search engines index these pages and display them as top search results. Once the victimhas been lured to a compromised site, they are redirected to the site offering the bogus software. Kings Cup – Monte Mar v La Marina

Monte Mar – 7 pointsLa Marina - 4 points

Last Wednesday saw the end of this season’s campaign for our club, andwhat a good way to finish against one ofthe top clubs in the competition, ourfriends from La Marina.

The victory by 7 points to 4 was excellent, but it could have been so muchbetter, as in two of the four disciplines wewere leading until the final end, only tolose one and draw the other.

However, all credit to the La Marinateam, who refused to accept a whitewash, and deservedly salvagedsome points from the match.

Brian Harman got us off to a good startby winning 21-13, and our pairs team ofJohn Corbet and Bill Young played welltogether to win by 27-12.

The triples of Dave Melville, Lynne andColin Armitage tied 15 shots all, and therinks of Chris Merry, Danny Redgewell,June Young and Harry Dobson lost a veryclose game on the last end 13-14.

The friendly match, a pairs, was won byBill Clifton and Babs Caiger, against theopposition Captain, Rex Cameron andhis partner.Captain, Bill Young, would like to thankall of the players who participated throughout the twelve match season, and also wishes to thank Vice-CaptainAlan Ashberry and third selector, Colin Armitage.

He further stated, that our good positionin the league shows what can beachieved by gelling good players to-gether in their respective disciplines, andthe selectors abiding by the criteria they

set before the season got under way.

The photograph shows the Kings Cupteam for the final match.

CHILDREN AND PETS

In summer, children and petsspend a longer time together than theydo in winter, for example at the street, restaurants, commercial centres, andalso at home (with or without guests). Inthis article we are going to try to explainthe most common dangers involvingchildren and pets when they play together.

It’s a very uncommon thing adog or cat causing a serious damage tochildren who live with him, even if thechild is a baby and the pet is a big sizedog; as a matter of fact, dogs are usually excellent nannies, and very wellbeloved games partners for children,

so, normally the problem comes fromthe child “abusing” the dog or cat, butnormally without serious complications.Of course, we are always talking aboutproperly vaccinated and wormed pets(which includes internal and externalparasites), because transmission ofworms from pets to children is relativelycommon since children can’t stop kissing and holding the pet, and theyoungest ones usually forget to washtheir hands after touching the pet. Anyway this can be easily prevented byusing good internal and external antiparasite treatments (internal are themost important ones, because it’s not

owner says “he never bites”, This is specially important if we and our children are “intruders” in the pet’s territory. Another important thing is thebreed: attacks caused by large dogs areless common than the ones caused bysmall dogs, because a big dog is muchmore respected by children than miniature ones (children think they canuse them as teddy bears). So, the firsttime the child meets the pet we mustkeep the eye on both ones attitude, andif we have any kind of doubt about whatis going to happen, the best thing is tokeep them apart (of course, withouttying or punishing the pet).

common for peoples to suffer from fleasand ticks infestations).

About vaccinations, just remindeverybody that, apart from rabies, dogsand cats infectious diseases are nottransmissible to people. Only parasitesand fungal skin infections must worry us.So, a healthy animal is not a risk for children health (except, of course, incase of a allergic child).

A source of worries for the parents are children being attacked bydogs or cats belonging to other people, because, as we said, dogs normallyprotect and respect their family’s children, but what about strangers? It’squite common to see a dog that allows“his” children to brush and even to putclothes on him, but might show angriness with other children. A similarthing happens with dogs that are usuallyaggressive with other cats but evensleeps together with “his” cat.

So, we must always warn children that they mustn’t touch unknown dogs and cats, even if the

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

I sometimes wonder about the Spanishchap who one day suggested to hischums that he thought it might be funto leave a pig’s leg hanging up on ahook for about a year, and then seewhat it tastes like. Actually, it turnedout to be quite a clever notion, as anyaficionado of Serrano Ham will tell you,and his mates didn’t cart him off to thenearest looney-bin.

He might have got the idea from this fellow, the Southern Grey Shrike. He is aclose relative of the Great Grey Shrike, which is a rare winter visitor to Britain, but in Spain the Southern Grey Shrike occurs all year round, and is fairly common. If you have a look at the tops of the taller trees in the Clot, you maysee one perched prominently surveying the area below him. Basically a grey-and-white bird, with a pinkish tinge to his white breast, he has a LoneRanger black mask around his eyes and a heavy beak with a hooked tip whichsuggests he might just be a little bit sinister.

What he is doing from his lofty perch is watching carefully for any passinglizard, rodent, large insect or small bird which may be unaware of his presence, then he will swoop down and dispatch it swiftly. What happens next is not for those of a weak stomach.

He may well decide he’s not in the mood right now for a snack of crunchygrasshopper or whatever, so he will keep it for later, and he does this by finding a thorny bush or line of barbed wire, and impaling his prey on thespikes. This is his larder, and if you come across a gruesome gibbet of smallanimals skewered up like this, you’ll know the local Shrike has been at work.Goodness knows what these morsels will taste like after being out for a fewdays in the hot sun, and well past their sell-by date; I’ve no intention of findingout either, but the Shrike is quite happy to do this.

He has another distant cousin, the Woodchat Shrike which is somewhatsmaller and different in colour, it is a black and white bird with a striking chestnut-coloured head, usually occurring only in the summer months, butregular in the Clot, and he also has the same spiky habits

The Spanish name for the Southern Grey Shrike is Alcaudon Real, meaningRoyal Butcherbird. I can’t see what’s royal about spiking your food out in theopen, but until I came to Spain I was quite happy to take my ham pre-packaged, so there’s hope for me yet.

See you next month.

Saying ´some´in Spanish

There are a couple of ways ofsaying ’some’ in Spanish. As weknow, ’some’ is an adjective, and therefore it must agree withthe noun that it is describing.‘Alguno’ is the usual way of saying ’some’, and this has fourforms: ‘algún’, ‘alguna’, ‘algunos’ and ‘algunas’.

In English we use the word’some’ for singular uncountablenouns, for example ’somemoney’, ’some people’ etc., andfor plural countable nouns,’some chairs’, some cars’ etc.,and this is why the Spanishneeds the four forms.

Let’s translate these fourphrases:

‘Some money’ - ‘algún dinero’‘Some people’ - ‘alguna gente’‘Some chairs’ - algunas sillas’‘Some cars’ - ‘algunos coches’

For the last two, ‘unos’ and‘unas’ could also be used.

Have a go at these phrases, translating them into Spanish:

1) Some bicycles2) Some balls3) Some rice4) Some coats5) Some coffee6) Some water
