We at your Gran Alacant Advertisercontinue to bring you allof the news from theGran Alacant Councillor,Loreto Cascales, as we havesince May 2005.

Tree planting

More than 150 people were involved intree planting at Clot de Galvany on March3rd. The councilmen of Gran Alacant andEnvironment, Loreto Cascales and DanielCheek, were so pleased with all of theeffort put in by the local people. In spite ofthe bad weather, many families of allnationalities were with us anddemonstrated they are totally immersed in

Dog fouling campaign - many people arecomplaining about dog owners notclearing up after their animals. There hasbeen so much feedback to us, that manyof you want a campaign started to “nipthis in the bud”.Dick Turpin´s bar in the Sierra Marcomplex is starting a petition to give tothe Town Hall, so please pop up there andsign it. If any other bars would like toparticipate, please give us a call.

Space and money has been allocated forthe allotments in Gran Alacant. The landis in the area of Avenida Carabassi andcovers an area of 1280 sqm. Residentscan apply for a plot for the purpose ofgrowing vegetables and plants. We will

the conservation of our environment”.More than 500 units of trees and nativeplants like lavender, lentisco, coscoja, carob tree, olive tree, palm heart orrosemary, were seeded in the strip thatdefines the municipal boundry of SantaPola with the natural place of the Clot deGalvany. A new re-forestation is predictedin which another thousand units willstand.

Two speakers from the BritishConsulate from Alicante gave avery informative talk to the localpeople, held at the Life Resort. The opening speeches from ourMayor and Loreto, explained howin future there is to be more of acoming together between ourTown Hall and the Consulate, tohelp all of the ex-pats in the area. There is so much support outthere for us all. Please go to theirvery information website atwww.ukinspain.fco.gov.ukDo not hesitate to give them a callto help with all aspects of health, pensions, benefits etc.Pictures supplied by the Town Hall

plot and the area where this facility will bemade available.

In our introduction you will have read ofthe tragic passing of Debbie from LegalSolutions. Forum members have askedfor a memorial and the Town Hall haveagreed to site it where and when thecommunity wants.

there is no extra space available in thisarea, we were told that there is plenty ofparking space on the various roadwayswithin walking distance of the Post Office.

The same thing applies where we wereasked about the parking of residents inthe area of the Life Resort. The councilcan do nothing about parking on publicroads, and this urbanisation have theirown parking provided within thecommunity.

Concern has been raised aboutcampervans strewn across the picnicarea next to the Clot, this area all comesunder the Elche Council, so anycomplaints need to be made to them.

We were asked by members of theCarabasi Bars, if signposting could beprovided from the Gran Alacant entrancesto their facilities. The contract for all ofthis signage comes under “Impurser”. Wehave a sign with this company so havepassed on their details to thoseconcerned.

We were asked if Baile buses couldprovide a timetable for getting into andout of Santa Pola during the festivals inSeptember. Loreto is going to discuss thiswith them.

Money is being spent to limit the amountof accidents on the corner between thepost office roundabout and the GAcentre.

Talking of roundabouts, work is underway on one of the prime roundabouts inSanta Pola. The one near to the market. This is to be a fountain, in the shape of astar, with a compass theme inrecognitionof the fishermen of Santa Pola.

There is some land near the bungalowsdown the hill that is very untidy close toresidents houses. It is near to where thenew allotments are to be cited. Houseowners there have volunteered to

contribute with time and cost, but, theCouncil says that it is their land, so theywill tidy it up themselves.

The PADRON, yes we know we arealways on about it. It does determine howmuch money is allocated to our GranAlacant. The EEC have now said that yournie number if you have one, must beadded to this form, so please go into theMuniciple Office and check that all of yourdetails are correct.

May 2011 means it will be election timeagain. If you want to vote and are on thepadron, you must sign a form to be ableto vote. When it is time to sign thispaperwork, Loreto will let us know, andyou will be able to do so at the GranAlacant Municiple Office.

We were asked about the gating of thecommunities around the area of theschool to help with the parking. We havebeen told it will be provided for in thisyears budget, so should go ahead later inthe year.

The Town Hall has been given a 5 millioneuro subsidy from the centralGovernment. This will be used for theallotments, landscaping the roundaboutnear the school, tidying up the frontage ofthe Council Offices and improving one ofthe pumping stations. Also money is to bespent on upgrading technology at SantaPola Town Hall.

The councilman of Gran Alacant, LoretoCascales, has announced that “as fromMonday 22nd of March the doctor'soffice of Gran Alacant will have a newdaily service of paediatrics in themunicipal building”. A paediatrician andan ATS will be,available Monday toFriday between 8:30 to 13:30 hours.Loreto Cascales said that “for us it is agreat satisfaction to be able to providethis new service which was a personalpersistence of the Mayor. We haveobtained it thanks to the help of the

Page 7: Gran Alacant Advertiser April 2010

Conselleria of Health. The demand hasbeen created by the people of GranAlacant, especially for the parents of the1,300 children between 0 and 14 yearsregistered here. Last year the doctor'soffice was open for paediatrics only onTuesdays and Fridays. Gran Alacant has10,277 people on the Padron to date 27of February of 2010, of which 4,826 are ofSpanish nationality and 3,054 are citizensof Britain, this being one the morenumerous foreign groups. The doctor'soffice on Gran Alacant was a profit of the

government team of Miguel Zaragozzawho began in his first legislature with onefamily doctor and, today, offers twofamily doctors with an ATS, apaediatrician with ATS and a matron inthe Health Centre of Santa Pola whocomes one day of the week to thedoctor's office”. Loreto Cascales pointsout that this means people of GranAlacant no longer have to travel to theHealth Centre in Santa Pola to take theirchildren to the “Healthy Baby”programme, because it will be possible toget the revisions and necessaryvaccinations here, therefore lighteningthe volume of work in the Health Centrein Santa Pola. “We have carried outalterations in the municipal building ofGran Alacant to accommodate thedoctors office and the ATS, as well as awaiting room. The paediatrics area isseparate from the adults area and islocated at the entrance of the buildingwith perfect accessibility for the babiespushchairs and prams, it has about 35 m2of surface and has been an investment

from the City council of 5,000 euros inmaterials, besides the manpower that hasbeen the responsibility of the municipalworkers of works, general electricity andservices, besides the personnel of theRacó Jove who have adorned the waitingroom for us with an infantile mural”. “Weare trying to maximise the facilities thatwe have in Gran Alacant, for that reasonthe Mayor is working hard with theConselleria of Health to construct a newhealth centre here that, by population, ismade more and more necessary tocontinue improving the public services inthe area, and that soon will become areality like so many other improvementsthat we have made in the last seven yearson Gran Alacant”.

One thing we have been asked to say isthat it has been noticed that somedelivery persons are not disposing of theirunwanted boxes in the correct bins but inthe small bins provided for litter, if barsand restaurant owners could make suretheir delivery persons know they must beput in the correct bins please.

Much work goes on during the winter, clearing our beaches of seagrass for thesummer.phew!!!!!!!!!!! lots of news

Hola, Regarding the problems of dog mess,Dogs in non dog areas, unchipped dogs, cruelty to dogs etc.Is the answer a dog warden? Dave Shaw

Barry,

Just had a look at the on line magazine. In the news section you are asking about how to stoppeople allowing dogs to foul to streets. Alicante along with other town halls has introduce heavypenalties http://www.diarioinformacion.com/alican ... 43494.htmlIt is the only way. If not in place introduce and ENFORCE the law. At least any fines raised cango towards the cleaning costs.

Paul

Dear BarryWould it be possible in your meeting with our town hall to remind them of the promise last yearto sort out the parking problems in Ave de Noruega 165,We owned part of the road and as suchit was private an asset owned by all the communitees. Because of the School entrance beingplaced in this private road we agreed to give the council the road in exchange for certain con-cessions one of which was to mark out private parking on the north side of the road for commu-nities parking only and to place gates on certain roads. Despite the budget for this beingincluded in the 2008/9 year this so far has not been started. Also can something be done tostop the school buses and cars speeding along this road it seems silly that a road that containsa school has a no overtaking sign and not to my knowledge a speed restriction.thanking youMAJ Gorfin Polignio 4-2-b

You asked for ideas on the problem of dog do's in the area.I remember that in the UK some years ago there was a campaign by the government and localcouncils to Encourage people to clean up after their dogs, due to the anti-social aspect and thedanger to children's health. The idea of the 'pooper scooper' came about, Which were availablefree together with bags and special dog bins were provided, Which were closed. Dog ownerswere persuaded to use them, in council newsletters etc. .. and signs saying Clean It Up! It didhave an effect, and made the act of 'cleaning up' the accepted norm, as it became unaccept-able to just leave it and eventually free bags etc were not needed.Perhaps the time has come for the council here to do the same sort of thing here now and pub-licized it in the Santa Pola News etc. The same facilities are needed in Santa Pola, such asalong the beach. And of course they are needed in all parts of Gran Alacant near urbanisations. The other issue worth mentioning, is the fact that pet shops here usually have puppies in theirwindows, sometimes encouraging people to buy them, especially young people. This is notsomething you see nowadays in the UK or the USA As I believe laws were brought in whichmore or less stopped this practice, Relating to the welfare of the animals. I expect the Valenciangovernment could bring in some similar regulations, Although this would take time. MaybeLoreto could raise the issue with them, being good at getting things done!Could you also please mention to Loreto that the campaign in Britian and the reasons for it alsoreceived publicity on T.V. If it does get going in Santa Pola, I would think the Valencial newsprogramme on Canal 9 would be happy to cover it. You probably will remember that one of thereasons was that children can catch a very nasty illness from dog excreta which can make themblind. Dog poo also contains E.coli and other bacteria. You could maybe go on to a webpagesuch as 'the effects of dog faeces' and print it off for Loreto ? She will then have some informa-tion which may help her to get her message over to other members of the council, and maybeeven the Valencian goverment!...........Best wishes Rose McManus

Hi It`s me again!!! I know I keep on about this but it`s driving me mad!! I`ve just watched 6 own-ers in about 20 minutes allowing their dogs to crap opposite the bbva bank with none of themclearing it up. Now thats only 20 minutes. Can you imagine a days worth? I saw on the GranAlacant website you have something on there about it. I dont subscribe to that so only read thecomments. I hope they do bring in a fine. I`m going to try & get an appointment with the councillady, (although I dont hold up much hope there). Sorry but I`m really fed up with people`s dis-gusting behaviour. Once again not the dogs fault.................lazy owners. Regards Lesley

Shortly after the very sad loss of Debbie Milligan a mother of three young children posted onthe Gran Alacant Plaza by Legal Solutions I contacted the family regarding the possibility ofdedicating a Palm tree to Debbie in Gran Alacant .......keeping the idea positive was importantand everyone has been fantastic with Barry from the Gran Alacant Advertiser contacting theSanta Pola council for us to get their blessing.I can confirm that Debbieʼs family would love to have a tree dedicated to her .....It would be alovely touch from all of us on the forums and Gran Alacant in general to give the family andchildren a focal point to remember her by for years to come.....There are two fundraising nights planned at the time of going to print over the Easter weekendat Legends Bar and the 3rd and 4th april at Los Belgas

Jean from the Fund-raising team organisedthe first event of the year which was a Fish andChip Supper at the Aquarius Restaurantewhich is on the Carabasi strip in Gran Alacant, where the Staff worked for free. This was onfor 2 evenings 7th and 8th March.

We had a very nice 3 course supper, whichconsisted of soup and rolls, fish and chips ofcourse, then chocolate gateau with half abottle of wine for just 10 euros, it wasdelicious and good value for money.

There was also entertainment in the name ofTerryoke who sang all the songs we love fromdecades past, the atmosphere was great andeveryone joined in. He and friends dressed upfor YMCA, I am sure we have a photo of this. The Quiz which Bill read out with his Welshcum cornish accent, we did try toanswer the questions once we understoodwhat he was actually saying! Irish Bingo,I was the first to sit down, and the customaryRaffle of course. Even more entertainmentwhen our friend Ken got up and played thespoons, and he is really good, as well as alovely Irish gentleman who told such goodjokes, he had a very broad accent so againonce we understood what he was saying wecouldn't stop laughing, must learn Irish too!All these people give their time free and

MABS Cancer Support Group is registeredcharity number 7261. The charity offerssupport, kindness and love to cancer patientsin the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. It wasstarted in 1999 by five ladies who hadsuffered with breast cancer but had no one toturn to for advice and support. They decidedthat others should not have to worry like theydid about translation between themselves andmedical staff, translation of technicalinformation about their cancer, transportationto and from hospital appointments and supportfor family and friends. The ladies were firmlydetermined to address all these things, andmore, for cancer patients in the future. Thereare now seven branches of the charity, all withtheir Volunteer Carers,

Volunteer Drivers and Volunteer Supporters, located from Valencia in the north to Marbellain the south.

Please come and join us! We need you!If you or someone in your family has any formof cancer, and you would like some support, some equipment or just a chat, please contact

On the right Jean from MABS, Mac and Angie in the middle, the owners of Aquarius, and Sarah who helped with the meal.

The man then said 'When I was at the races last week Jennywas the name of the horse I bet on' The wife apologized and went on with the housework. Three days later the man is watching TV when his wife basheshim on the head with an even bigger frying pan, knocking himunconscious. Upon re-gaining consciousness the man asked why she had hitagain.

Hello, This month we are going to talk about pedicures. As summer is fast approaching our feet will become more exposed so its time to

start to get them prepared. Feet are an interesting part of the human anatomy, one of the most useful and

unfortunately the most neglected parts of our body is our feet. We use them continuously, strain them walk for miles on them, they take the weight of our body and yet

we forget to take care of their basic needs and comforts. There are so many elementsof everyday living that are absolutely torturous for our feet. For example, our local bar andrestaurant staff spend many hours standing on there feet. Feet are often taken for granteduntil they start to hurt and reject the Burdon we place upon them. Lack of good care for feet result in many ailments, such as Bunions, Tinea Pedis, and Ingrowing toe nails. People with diabetes have an increased risk for infections. Therefore, it is important that their feet are wellcared for. For all of us it is not just the summer months, but all year round that we need to takecare of them.A bunion is a harmless swelling of the joint of the big toe which is particularly common in middle-aged woman. It usually affects both feet. As the joint swells, the skin over it becomeshard, red and tender. The big toe usually becomes displaced, turning inwards towards theother toes. Infections such as Tinea Pedis commonly know as (Athleteʼs Foot) this is a form of ringwormwhich affects the skin of the foot. The fungus invades between the toes and can spread to thesoles and side of the feet. The first signs are itching, flaking, cracking and weeping of the skinbetween the toes. It is imperative that this is treated. The local pharmacy carry powder andcreams to treat this, however, if it persists you must consult your GPIngrowing toenails the nails of the big toes are the ones which are most commonly affected. Instead of moving along the nail bed in the nail groves, the sides of the nail cut into the nail wallcausing skin damage. Inflammation, swelling and pus often occur; the condition has to betreated medically. The two most common causes are ill fitting shoes and cutting the nail downtheir side outside of straight across. How many of us think about giving them a beauty treatment? Unfortunately very few of us. If you have ever had a professional pedicure you know how amazing if feels to have your feettaken care of, how relaxing and nice it is to have them pampered. So donʼt just there give me acall. As alwaysʼ you can call into the salon or give me a call for any advice or information.Next month we will discuss Massage. See you then ...................Dott

and with them, two points effectivelydropped, Santa Pola have rather benefited from some rather curious results involving the teams around them.I last left you on a bleak Saturday afternoon in February where Aspe hadtenaciously denied their visitors all threepoints and battled to a goal-less draw. Aweek later Santa Pola drew again, thistime at home to Alone de Guardamarwho led until the fifth minute of additional time at which point defenderMiguel Blasco popped up to equalize.

A 1-1 draw was soon followed by a 2-2 result when Santa Pola travellednorth to take on Altea at the picturesqueGarganes ground. Next up, another tough away matchagainst a team Santa Pola had beenbeaten by at home in November; Polop, from north of Alicante. The rather grandlytitled home of Polop is anything but; situated in the middle of a bit of ascruffy industrial estate, don’t be misledby the name. The only saving graceabout the Nou Camp Terol is the naturalgrass pitch on which Polop and SantaPola battled to a one all draw in a matchfull of incident. The home side openedthe scoring with a very fortunate penaltybefore Santa Pola had two players

Seven matches remain Approaching Semana Santa weekend,

the second of two with no Preferentefootball in recent weeks, just seven fixtures remain for Santa Pola CF to

stake theirclaim for a playoff berth. Having sat comfortably inthe upperreaches of theleague table formost of the season, thepossibility ofrelegation hasnot been anissue for manyweeks. At thetime of writing,

‘Pola sit eight points behind third placedHoradada, who, for long periods led theleague, but now appear to be struggling. With their poor patch behind them, SantaPola are coming in to form just at theright time and are presently in the middle of another unbeaten run. Mutxamel and Benisa occupy the topspots with the latter, financed by awealthy benefactor, seemingly home andhosed. In the Group 4 basement, Aspehave a mountain to climb and are adriftof fifteenth place and safety by a whopping thirteen points.

And how did we get where we are?

game of football, Santa Pola pulled thegoal back amid scenes of great relief toclaim a hard earned point.

And what’s coming up next? With just three fixtures in April, Santa

On a positive note, ofthose three games, two are at homeagainst struggling teams, second frombottom Orihuela B and mid-table Javea. The third of their April matches looks tobe the hardest of the entire run-in, awayto champions elect Benisa, for whom former ‘Pola player Toni Giminez hasbeen amongst the goals recently.

PLANNING AND WORK ON YOUR HOME

The Spanish rules and regulations relating toworks carried out on your home vary fromTown to Town and differ greatly from the English laws.

Many expats on the coast unwittingly fall foulof the Spanish regulations and some findthemselves in trouble with the local Town Hall.

Some Town Halls have people travelling roundlooking for skips or signs of work done. In allhonesty it’s not pleasant having someoneturning up asking what you have done and

why, when you thought you were just doingsome minor improvements.

Everyone should be aware that no matter howsmall the job, you should check whether thework is allowed or whether you do need

permission even if it is a minor works licence.

If you do intend to carry out major work ensure that you instruct a competent architect. You should check out the charges in advance. They should also advise you about the taxespayable on the improvements.

You should not undertake any work withoutpermission – you might find if you do that permission that would normally be grantedmay not !

If you are planning an extension make sureyou get a final certificate of works and that thearchitect gets the certificate sealed by theircollege. All this should be presented to theTown Hall.

It is wise to note that when you come to sellthe property there may be a difference in themeterage of the property you bought and theone you sell. With specialist legal assistancethis can be resolved where necessary. Don’tmake your property unsaleable by not getting

Page 63: Gran Alacant Advertiser April 2010

your paperwork in order. There is nothingmore frustrating either for you or yourprospective buyer because this situation thentakes time to resolve and can delay completion for as much as 6 months and thelikelihood is that you would lose your sale.

The workings of the Spanish laws are not confined to the house. There are differentguidelines in each town as to what can andcannot be done in the garden.

We all know you need planning permission toput in a swimming pool but not everyoneknows that you cannot chop down trees without permission and even then some treesare protected and it will not be allowed.

Again there are variations from town to townand you should check before you start and findout what is allowed and what isn’t and whatyou need permission for. We know of onetown hall that doesn’t allow wooden structures in the garden such as a shed or apergola !

My best advice for anyone contemplatingmaking improvements to their home or gardenis to do your research before you start yourproject, that way you can enjoy the work. Ifyou don’t you might just find that all that hardearned money has been wasted. Most TownHalls are happy to give you the information. And if you do get problems call us and we willhelp try and resolve it.

Crossbar Trophy – England v Scotland

We were delighted recently to host the annualchallenge match between teams representingEngland and Scotland, with players drawnfrom clubs all over the Costa.

What great day! The weather was overcast tostart with but at least we had no rain to contend with, and eventually the sun managedto break through towards lunchtime. However,The wind was always a problem with equalamounts of almost calm and some quite stronggusts.

The six England and Scotland teams did not let

the weather ruin their competitive edge, and sobattle commenced.

After a good morning bowling, Team Englandcame out on top by 110 shots to 84, but to befair the result was in doubt until the last fewends, and several of the rinks were very close.

Dave Melville, the manager of Team England, would like to thank the team for a great efforttoday against the ‘auld enemy’. He would also

like to thank Jackie Breslin and the Scottishteam for providing such stiff opposition; allhelpers at Monte Mar for making the day possible; Bill Young for being Umpire of theday; and Antonio and staff at the El Rincon forthe after match hospitality.

We look forward to next year, and hope it provides as good a day as this.

The final was contested by Joan Feabes, FredTaylor and Harry Dobson, who were pittedagainst Pauline Merry, Ted Hyman and DannyKing.

Danny’s team won the final, and were presented with the Memorial Trophy by Mrs.Jakki Pearce. This was another good day of

ALLERGIC PROBLEMS BETWEEN PETS AND OWNERS

When spring is approaching, the numberof cases of allergies usually starts increasing, dueto the bigger quantity of plants, insects or parasiteswhich appear everywhere when temperatures rise.In the other hand, we go out more often, so we aremore exposed to lots of different things which areable to cause allergies. In this point we must sayan allergy and a local reaction against irritantplants or chemicals are not the same problem. Anallergy implies an abnormal reaction of the organism (implying the skin in lots of cases)against something which wouldn’t produce a so bigreaction (or any reaction at all) in a normal individual. Apart from skin symptoms, we may report digestive, ocular or respiratory symptoms.

As you can imagine, animals that live indoors have less chances of suffering from parasitic or allergic problems, but of course keeping the animal permanently locked at home isnot a solution, because most allergens (substancesthat are able to produce an allergic reaction), suchas pollen, mites, animal fur, etc, go through the air,

and besides, we ourselves may be a source of thoseallergens for our pet, since they may travel in ourclothes or shoes.

People may also suffer from allergies forthe same reasons our pets do, and our pet may be asource of allergens for us. Sometimes it’s very difficult to find out what is exactly causing the allergic problem, because there are millions of different substances around us. Just think aboutchemicals and food preservatives we eat everyday:allergies against them are becoming more and morecommon. Anyway, the two most common causes ofallergies in pets are still food and fleas. Alimentaryallergy normally is not a seasonal process, despitesometimes it gets worse in spring because it getsassociated with fleas or some other allergens whichbecome more common in spring. Some pet ownersbelieve their dog or cat doesn’t have any flea at all, because they’ve never seen one on the animal, andbecause they use an insecticide regularly. A certainquantity of fleas around the animal is a normal condition, and it’s not related to a deficient pet orhome hygiene, because flea is a highly evolved andspecialized parasite, which knows very well how tolive with us without becoming evident, by using the

environment we provide them at our homes, carpets, upholstery, which offer the flea the right darkness, moisture and temperature for completing its cycle.Fleas normally don’t survive at the street, their habitat is our home, but we usually forget fleas areinsects which suffer a metamorphosis like butterflies, so adult flea is only the final phase of thecycle. Earlier phases such as larvae may survive forlong periods of time in extreme conditions, and whenthe moment is right (that means, when a dog or cator human is coming close), they can become adultfleas within a few minutes. Fleas know perfectlywho are biting, and they prefer to bite some speciesbetter than others, because they’ve been living withdogs, cats, people and ruminants for centuries. Forthat reason we probably won’t get bitten by dog andcat fleas, so we won’t be able to detect them. In theother hand, if the pet is not allergic against fleasaliva, won’t scratch itself remarkably. But if we aretalking about an allergic animal, only one flea biteis enough to produce a strong pruriginous reactionthat will last for some days. That’s because somepeople refuses to accept the diagnosis of a flea biteallergy: mustn’t be a flea related problem, becausemy dog is completely free of fleas.

Nowadays there are plenty of medicinesfor controlling fleas on healthy animals, but from themoment the animal becomes allergic, a total controlof every phase of flea cycle is required, by usinganti-adult, anti-larvae and anti-ova insecticides,

plus environmental insecticides. Besides, the allergic animal mustn’t contact other pets whichhaven’t been treated against fleas, and those dogscannot visit the place where the allergic pet lives. The problem becomes economically more importantif we have more than one pet at home, because inthat case we have to treat all of them. When fleapopulation at home is under control, we can treat thehypersensitivity itself, but the first step for a rightdiagnosis and treatment will always be eliminatingthe fleas (adults, larvae and ova).

A similar case would be alimentary hypersensitivity: for making a right diagnosis the animal must be on a hypoallergenic diet for severalweeks, and then that diet becomes the main part ofthe treatment. In some cases, this hypersensitivityappears in animals which have been on the samediet for years. In this case we have two possibilities:the animal has been getting sensitive very little bylittle, till the problem appears suddenly, or maybeone of the ingredients of the diet (not the main one,but a colorant or preservative), has changed. In bothcases the best option is to try a hypoallergenic dietand see the results, because trying different brandsof ordinary food will only delay the solution of theproblem.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

A major feature of the internet is the variousdiscussion forums which have arisen overthe years. These range from the esoteric(Brain Surgery) to the banal (GA ChickenWings), and one wonders sometimes if theparticipants in the latter should not seek assistance from the members of the former.Internet critics will argue that pointlessforum postings are one reason why the internet is a Bad Thing, but with regard to ourbirds this month, it is the British Birdwatching forums which have beenspreading the news about both thesespecies appearing more and more in the UKwhere previously they were rare or unknown. Not that it takes an internet forum to generate interest – who could fail to besomewhat startled at the sudden appearance of a pure-white heron in Britain? But of course, because we’re in the heartlandof the breeding ranges of these birds inSpain, they are commonplace to us. You maywell have seen one, and then if you werevery observant, seen another one which wasjust not quite the same as the first. So let me introduce to you the Cattle Egretand the Little Egret, both smaller cousins ofthe more familiar Grey Heron. In my photos, you will see that the Cattle Egret has a yellow bill, the Little Egret has a black one. Both are roughly the same size, about half asbig as a Grey Heron. The Cattle Egret is a gregarious bird, if yousee one there’s usually more nearby, and thename comes from their feeding habit ofhanging around cattle to see what might bedisturbed by the movement of the herds. They have also discovered that farmersploughs do the same thing, and although youmight think that a heron-like bird would onlyexist on fish, here’s one which has adaptedto a more earthy (or wormy) diet. The Little Egret is more of a loner, and of amore aquatic persuasion, doing the

traditional Heron thing and terrorising thelocal fish with that dagger bill, but on asmaller scale. They have spread northwardsinto the UK in some numbers and are nowregular breeding birds; the Cattle Egrets arelagging behind but becoming more regular

Both birds are common in the Clot; last yearthere were twenty or more Cattle Egrets atone time, the Little Egret is less frequent butthere’s usually one around somewhereDouble vision is unsettling at the best oftimes; it can be caused by walking intowalls, too much sangria, heading a Ronaldopiledriver out for a corner, or seeing thesetwo birds in the Clot which could be twins, but aren’t.

See you next month.
