Іменник (The Noun)

Іменник — частина мови, яка називає предмет або явище, що сприймається як предмет. Імен-ники поділяються на власні (Proper Nouns) та загальні (Common Nouns). До власних належать імена (Peter, John Smith), географічні назви (Kyiv, the Carpathians), а також предмети та явища, єдині у своєму роді (the French Revolution). В англійській мові до власних іменників належать також назви днів та місяців (Monday, September).

Іменники поділяються на конкретні та абстрактні (a spoon, probability), назви істот і неістот (a student, a book); збірні (a family, a crowd); матеріально-речовинні (water, wool).

Загальні іменники можна поділити на обчислювані (злічувані), та необчислювані (незлічувані).

Обчислювані Необчислювані

1) назви істот і неістот a boy — 2 boys a table — 5 tables2) назви одиниць вимірювання a month — 2 months

1) назви абстрактних понять knowledge love2) назви речовин, матеріалів silver

Число (The Number)

1. Іменники в англійській мові, як і в українській, мають два числа: однину (Singular) і мно-жину (Plural).

2. Форму множини утворюють лише обчислювані іменники:

a pen — many pens one table — three tables

one car — nine cars a tree — a lot of trees

3. Множина іменників утворюється додаванням до форми однини закінчення -s, яке після дзвінких приголосних і голосних вимовляється як [z], а після глухих приголосних — як [s]:

[z] [z] [s]

a hand — handsa train — trainsa club — clubsa wall — walls

a shoe — shoesa sea — seas a tree — trees a table — tables

a book — books a lamp — lamps a hat — hats a street — streets

4. Іменники, що закінчуються на -s, -ss, -x, -sh, -ch, -tch у множині мають закінчення -es, яке вимовляється [Iz]:

a bus — buses a box — boxes a bench — benches

a class — classes a dish — dishes a watch — watches

Page 13: Grammar+Tests [1]

17Граматика

5. До іменників, що закінчуються на -у з попередньою приголосною, додається закінчення -es, при цьому у змінюється на і. Іменники, які закінчуються на -у з попередньою голосною, утворюють множину додаванням закінчення -s.

a cherry — cherries a toy —toys

a lady — ladies a key — keys

a factory — factories a day — days

6. У деяких іменниках, що в однині закінчуються на -f, -fe, у множині -f змінюється на -v з додаванням закінчення -(e)s, яке вимовляється [z]:

a life — lives a shelf — shelves

a knife — knives a scarf — scarves

a wife — wives a wolf — wolves

Але деякі іменники, які закінчуються на -f та -fe, утворюють множину додаванням закін-чення -s:

a chief — chiefs a safe — safes

a roof — roofs a handkerchief — handkerchiefs

7. Деякі іменники утворюють множину не за правилами — зміною кореневої голосної. Їх слід запам’ятати:

a man — men a foot — feet a child — children

a woman — women a tooth — teeth an ox — oxen

a goose — geese a mouse — mice a person — persons (оф.), people

8. Іменники, що закінчуються на -о, у множині мають закінчення -es: a potato — potatoes a tomato — tomatoes a hero — heroes

Але: a photo — photos a piano — pianos a radio — radios

9. Деякі іменники зберегли стародавню форму множини, яка збігається з формою однини:

a deer — deer a sheep — sheep a swine — swine a fi sh — fi sh a fruit — fruit

Th e deer is a graceful animal. Th e sheep are domestic animals.10. Утворення деяких іменників латинського і грецького походження треба запам’ятати:

datum — data crisis — crises

analysis — analyses phenomenon — phenomena

11. Деякі іменники уживаються тільки в множині:

trousers — штани scissors — ножиці goods — речі, товар

Page 14: Grammar+Tests [1]

18 Фонетика та граматика англійської мови

12. Деякі іменники уживаються тільки в однині:

news — новина, новини knowledge — знання luggage — багаж

advice — порада money — гроші mathematics — математика

information — інформація furniture — меблі athletics — атлетика

13. З деякими необчислюваними іменниками ми можемо використовувати наступні слово-сполучення:

a piece of advice / information / news / luggage

a pair of pyjamas / jeans / trousers

a jar of jam

a glass of water / milk

a litre of oil

a tube of toothpaste

a slice of toast / lemon / bread

Відмінок (The Case)

1. В англійській мові іменник має два відмінки: загальний (the Common Case) і присвійний (the Possessive Case).

2. Загальний відмінок не має спеціальних відмінкових закінчень. Зв’язок іменника у загаль-ному відмінку з іншими словами виражається прийменниками і місцем у реченні. Так, іменник, що стоїть перед присудком, є підметом:

Th e boy asks the girl. — Хлопчик запитує дівчинку.А після присудка — прямим додатком:

Th e girl asks the boy. — Дівчинка запитує хлопчика.3. У формі присвійного відмінка вживаються головним чином іменники, що означають людей

і тварин.4. Присвійний відмінок іменників в однині утворюється додаванням закінчення -’s (тобто

апострофа і букви s). Присвійний відмінок іменників у множині утворюється додаванням апост-рофа. Якщо іменник у множині не закінчується на -s, то його присвійний відмінок утворюється так само, як в однині, тобто додаванням -’s.

Однина Множина

’s s’ ’s

her student’s book — книжка її студента

her students’ books — книжки її студентів

the children’s room — дитяча кімната

his son’s fl at — квартира його сина

his sons’ fl ats — квартири його синів

those men’s cars — машини тих чоловіків

Page 15: Grammar+Tests [1]

19Граматика

5. Якщо іменник в однині закінчується на -s або -х, то у присвійному відмінку однини до нього додається лише апостроф або апостроф і закінчення -s, але читається, ніби -s також до-дано до слова:

Bess’ book [’besiz ’bVk] книга Бесс;Bess’s book [’besiz ’bVk] книга Бесс.

6. Інколи форму присвійного відмінка можуть набувати іменники, що означають:а) назви країн, міст, суден:

Kyiv’s streets вулиці Києва

the “Neva’s” crew команда корабля «Нева»

б) час і відстань:

a kilometre’s distance відстань в один кілометр

three months’ work тримісячна праця

tomorrow’s newspaper завтрашня газета

в) збірні поняття типу government, party, army, family, society:

the family’s traditions сімейні традиції

the government’s decision постанова уряду

7. Значення присвійного відмінка в англійській мові передається також сполученням при-йменника of з іменником у загальному відмінку (of-phrase). Найчастіше такі сполучення вико-ристовуються, коли іменник означає речі.

the leg of the table ≠ the table’s leg (так сказати не можна)8. Коли дві або більше людини є власниками одного предмета, закінчення присвійного від-

мінка додається до останнього іменника. Порівняйте:

Peter and Helen’s fl at — квартира Пітера і Хелен (вони живуть разом)

Peter’s and Helen’s fl ats — квартири Пітера і Хелен (вони живуть окремо)

Прикметник (The Adjective)

Прикметник виражає ознаку, якість або властивість предметів, явищ та істот і відповідає на запитання який? (what?) a green bench, a blue shirt, a new dress.

Ступені порівняння прикметників

1. В англійській мові прикметники не змінюються ні за родами, ні за числами, ні за відмін-ками. Вони змінюються лише за ступенями порівняння. Якісні прикметники мають звичайну форму (the Positive Degree), вищий ступінь порівняння (the Comparative Degree) і найвищий (the Superlative Degree).

2. Форми вищого і найвищого ступенів порівняння прикметників можуть бути, як і в ук-раїнській мові, простими і складеними.

3. Прості форми ступенів порівняння утворюються додаванням до звичайної форми закін-чення -еr у вищому ступені та -est — у найвищому.

В англійській мові прості форми ступенів порівняння мають:

Звичайна форма Вищий ступінь Найвищий ступінь

а) усі односкладові прикметники:

deep deeper the deepest

short shorter the shortest

cold colder the coldest

б) двоскладові прикметники, що закінчуються на -у, -er, -le, -ow:

easy easier the easiest

clever cleverer the cleverest

narrow narrower the narrowest

simple simpler the simplest

в) двоскладові прикметники з наголосом на другому складі:

polite politer the politest

Th is river is deeper than the Don. — Ця річка глибша за Дон.It is the deepest river in Ukraine. — Це найглибша річка в Україні.

4. При утворенні простих форм ступенів порівняння дотримуються таких правил орфографії:а) якщо прикметник закінчується на -е, то перед закінченнями -еr, -est воно випадає:

brave — braver — the bravest;б) в односкладових прикметниках перед закінченнями -er, -est кінцева приголосна подво-

юється, якщо перед нею стоїть короткий голосний звук:big — bigger — the biggest;

в) якщо прикметник закінчується на букву -у з попереднім приголосним, то перед -er, -est у змінюється на і:

busy — busier — the busiest.

Page 33: Grammar+Tests [1]

37Граматика

5. Складені форми утворюються за допомогою слів more більш для вищого і most найбільш для найвищого ступеня.

6. Складені форми ступенів порівняння мають усі багатоскладові прикметники і двоскладові з наголосом на першому складі, крім тих, що закінчуються на -у, -er, -le, -ow:

Звичайна форма Вищий ступінь Найвищий ступінь

diffi cult more diffi cult the most diffi cult

active more active the most active

useful more useful the most useful

beautiful more beautiful the most beautiful

Th is task is more diffi cult than task 2. — Це завдання більш складне, ніж друге завдання.Th is is the most diffi cult task I have ever done. — Це найбільш складне завдання, яке я

коли-небудь виконував.7. Ступені порівняння деяких прикметників в англійській мові, як і в українській, утворю-

ються від інших коренів:

Звичайна форма Вищий ступінь Найвищий ступінь

good — гарний better — кращий the best — найкращий

bad — поганий worse — гірший the worst — найгірший

little — маленький less — менший the least — найменший

much/many — багато more — більше the most — найбільше

old — старший older — старшийelder — старший (із членів родини)

oldest — найстаршийeldest — найстарший (із членів родини)

far — далекий farther — більш далекий (про відстань)further — більш далекий, по-дальший

farthest — найдальший (про відстань)furthest — найдальший

Your pen is better than mine. — Ваша ручка краща, ніж моя.Th is is the worst fi lm of the month. — Це найгірший фільм у цьому місяці.He is my elder brother. — Він мій старший брат.Th e child was playing in the farthest corner of the garden. — Дитина грала у найдальшому

куточку садка.8. а) При порівнянні предметів вживається сполучник than:

Th is book is more interesting than that one. — Ця книга більш цікава, ніж та.Your fl at is less comfortable than his. — Ваша квартира менш комфортабельна, ніж його.

б) Для порівняння двох предметів однакової якості вживається прикметник у звичайному ступені, який ставиться між подвійним сполучником as... as (такий..., як), not so…as (не такий..., як):

He is as tall as his father. — Він такий же високий, як і його батько.She is not so tall as Ann. — Вона не така висока, як Ганна.

Прислівник (The Adverb)

Прислівник називає ознаку дії, процесу, стану та якості або вказує на обставини, за яких відбувається подія чи явище.

Th e car went quickly. — Машина їхала швидко.

Утворення прислівників

1. За формою прислівники поділяються на прості, похідні, складні і складені.Прості: here тут; there там, туди; now зараз, тепер; soon скоро, незабаром; late пізно; very

дуже тощо. Похідні, які утворюються від прикметників і деяких іменників за допомогою суфікса -lу:

badly погано; slowly повільно; happily щасливо; daily щодня тощо.Складні: somewhere де-небудь, куди-небудь; nowhere ніде, нікуди тощо.Складені: since then з тих пір; till now до цього часу, досі, at once відразу, for ever назавжди тощо.Деякі прислівники (fast, loud, long, far, little, much, late, straight, early, daily, weekly, monthly,

friendly) збігаються за формою з прикметниками і відрізняються від них лише за функцією, яку вони виконують у реченні. Прислівники відносяться до дієслова, а прикметники — до іменника:

Прикметник Прислівник

He returned from a long journey. — Він повернув-ся з довгої мандрівки.

Will you stay here long? — Ви надовго тут зали-шитесь?

It is a daily newspaper. — Ця газета виходить кожного дня.

I see him daily. — Я бачу його кожного дня.

2. Прислівники поділяються на:а) прислівники часу (adverbs of time): today, then, now, yesterday, before тощо;б) прислівники місця (adverbs of place): here, there, back, everywhere, outside тощо;в) прислівники способу дії (adverbs of manner): well, slowly, hard, fl uently тощо;г) прислівники міри ознаки і ступеня (adverbs of degree): very, almost, much, too, little, just тощо.

Page 35: Grammar+Tests [1]

39Граматика

Звичайна форма Вищий ступінь Найвищий ступінь

б) прислівники, які закінчуються на -lу, утворюють вищий ступінь за допомогою слова more і най-вищий — за допомогою слова most:

usually more usually most usually

attentively more attentively most attentively

correctly more correctly most correctly

Деякі прислівники, як і відповідні прикметники, утворюють ступені порівняння від іншого кореня:

Звичайна форма Вищий ступінь Найвищий ступінь

well — добре better — краще best — найкраще

badly — погано worse — гірше worst — найгірше

much/many — багато more — більше most — найбільше

little — мало less — менше least — найменше

far — далеко farther, further — далі farthest, furthest — якнайдалі

Місце прислівника в реченні

1. Прислівники неозначеного часу always, never, seldom, oft en, usually, already стоять перед дієсловом у Present або Past Indefi nite:

He never comes late. 2. З дієсловом to be ці прислівники стоять після дієслова:

Th ey are always ready.3. У складних формах дієслова прислівник ставиться після допоміжного дієслова:

Th ey are always seen together. I can oft en read in bed.4. Прислівники yesterday, today, tomorrow стоять на початку або в кінці речення:

Tomorrow I am leaving. I am coming today.5. Прислівники quickly, slowly, badly та інші стоять перед перехідними дієсловами або після

додатка до них: І quickly found him.

6. Прислівник enough ставиться після прикметників та прислівників, але перед іменни-ками:

adj. + enough My coat is warm enough.

adv. + enough I know this man well enough.

enough + noun He doesn’t have enough work.

7. Якщо прислівників два або більше, їх послідовність у реченні така: прислівник способу дії (1), місця (2), часу (3):

Не is working hard there now.

Числівник (The Numeral)

Числівник — частина мови, що означає число, певну кількість чого-небудь, порядок пе-реліку при лічбі. В англійській мові числівники поділяються на кількісні (Cardinal Numerals) і порядкові (Ordinal Numerals).

Кількісні числівники

1. Кількісні числівники відповідають на запитання скільки? (how many?)2. Основою всіх числівників є числівники першого десятка. За способом творення числів-

ники поділяються на прості, похідні та складені.3. Прості: one, two, three, four, fi ve, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, a (one) hundred, a (one)

thousand, a (one) million.4. Похідні числівники утворюються за допомогою:

а) суфікса -teen (від 13 до 19): thirteen, fourteen, fi ft een, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen;б) суфікса -ty (від 20 до 90): twenty, thirty, forty, fi ft y, sixty, seventy, ninety.

Примітка. Зверніть увагу на написання деяких похідних числівників:two [tH] — twelve [twelv]— twenty ['twentI]three [TrJ] — thirteen [TE:'tJn] — thirty ['TE:tI]four [fL] — fourteen [fL'tJn]— forty ['fLtI]fi ve [faIv] — fi ft een [fIf'tJn] — fi ft y ['fIftI]eight [eIt]— eighteen [eI'tJn] — eighty ['eItI]

5. Складені числівники утворюються сполученням простих числівників: 33 — thirty-three; 125 — one hundred and twenty-fi ve; 7,000 — seven thousand; 2,000,369 — two million three hundred and sixty-nine.

6. Зверніть увагу:a) Якщо перед числівниками hundred, thousand, million стоїть інший числівник, то вони

у множині не мають закінчення -s: fi ve hundred; four thousand; six million.б) Якщо ж ці числівники вживаються як іменники, тобто коли перед ними немає інших

числівників, вони приймають у множині закінчення -s. У цьому разі після них стоїть іменник з прийменником of:

Th ousands of people come here every day. — Тисячі людей приходять сюди кожного дня.

Page 39: Grammar+Tests [1]

43Граматика

в) В англійській мові кожні три розряди багатоцифрових чисел відокремлюються комою, а не крапкою, як в українській:

3,327,834; 853,425,103. Крапкою відокремлюється ціле число в десяткових дробах:

38.3 — thirty-eight point three;г) Дати позначаються кількісними числівниками:

1987 рік — nineteen eighty-seven;д) Для позначення віку вживається наступна конструкція:

I am seventeen (years old).

Порядкові числівники

1. Порядкові числівники вказують на порядок предметів і відповідають на запитання котрий? (which?).

2. Порядкові числівники, за винятком перших трьох, утворюються з відповідних кількісних додаванням суфікса -th, при цьому в числівниках fi ve і twelve буквосполучення ve змінюється на букву f; до числівника eight додається буква h; у числівника nine випадає буква е; у назвах десятків у змінюється на ie:

1st — fi rst 10th — tenth2nd — second 11th — eleventh 3rd — third 12th — twelft h 4th — fourth 13th — thirteenth 5th — fi ft h 20th — twentieth6th — sixth 21st — twenty-fi rst 7th — seventh 30th — thirtieth 8th — eighth 100th — one hundredth 9th — ninth 101st — one hundred and fi rst

3. У складених порядкових числівниках лише останній набуває форми порядкового числівника: 45th — the forty-fi ft h2614th — the two thousand six hundred and fourteenth

4. Число місяця позначається порядковим числівником з означеним артиклем. Числівник ставиться або перед назвою місяця з прийменником of, або після неї без прийменника:

9th of May, 2001 — the ninth of May, two thousand and one May 9, 2001 — May the ninth, two thousand and one

5. Іменники, перед якими стоїть порядковий числівник, вживаються з означеним артиклем: Th e second paragraph is more interesting than the fi rst one. — Другий параграф більш

цікавий, ніж перший.6. При позначенні номерів глав, сторінок, частин книги тощо, порядкові числівники часто

замінюються на похідні:the fi ft h page = page fi ve — п’ята сторінкаthe seventh text = text seven — сьомий текст

7. Якщо перед порядковим числівником стоїть неозначений артикль, числівник має значен-ня — ще один:

Give me a second cup. — Дай мені ще одну чашку.

Page 40: Grammar+Tests [1]

44 Фонетика та граматика англійської мови

Дробові числівники

У простих дробах чисельником є кількісний числівник, а знаменником — порядковий. Якщо чисельник більший від одиниці, то знаменник має закінчення -s. Між цілою і дробовою части-нами вживається сполучник and:

1/2 — a (one) half; 2/3 — two thirds; 2 1/3 — two and one third;1/3 — a (one) third; 5/6 — fi ve sixths; 3 2/5 — three and two fi ft hs.

У десяткових дробах ціла частина відокремлюється від дробової не комою, а крапкою, яка читається point. Нуль читається nought [nLt] (або zero ['zIqrqV] у США). Якщо число цілих дорівнює нулю, воно часто не читається. Кожна цифра як цілої, так і дробової частини десят-кового дробу читається окремо.

0.1 — nought point one або point one2.37 — two point three seven25.01 — twenty-fi ve point nought one або two fi ve point nought one

Запам’ятайте! Для позначення часу використовуються наступні конструкції:

11.00 Рівно одинадцять. It is eleven sharp.

11.10 10 хвилин на дванадцяту. It’s ten past eleven.

11.15 Чверть на дванадцяту. It’s a quarter past eleven.

11.30 Половина на дванадцяту. It’s half past eleven.

11.45 Без чверті дванадцять. It’s a quarter to twelve.

11.50 10 хвилин до дванадцятої. It’s ten to twelve.

Дієслово (The Verb)

Способи дієслова (Moods)

В англійській мові, як і в українській, виділяють три способи дієслова: дійсний (the Indicative Mood), умовний (the Subjunctive Mood) і наказовий (the Imperative Mood).

До неособових форм дієслова належать інфінітив (the Infi nitive), герундій (the Gerund) і дієприкметник (the Participle).

Page 42: Grammar+Tests [1]

46 Фонетика та граматика англійської мови

4. Дієслова в англійській мові мають чотири основні форми:І — інфінітив (the Infіnіtіvе); II — минулий неозначений час (Past Іndеfіnіtе); III — дієприкметник минулого часу (Past Participle); IV — дієприкметник теперішнього часу (Present Participle).

5. За способом творення Past Indefi nite і Past Participle дієслова поділяються на правильні та неправильні.

6. Правильні дієслова утворюють форму минулого неозначеного часу (Past Indefi nite) і фор-му дієприкметника минулого часу (Past Participle) додаванням у всіх особах закінчення -ed до інфінітива:

І II III

to work worked workedto stay stayed stayedto dry dried dried

7. Неправильні дієслова утворюють другу і третю форми особливими способами, і їх необ-хідно запам’ятати:

І II III

to begin began begunto go went gone

Дійсний спосіб (The Indicative Mood)

Активний стан (The Active Voice)

(Indefi nite Tenses)

Поняття про неозначені часи

Часи групи Indefi nite виражають дію, що відбувається в теперішньому, минулому або май-бутньому часах, без зазначення характеру цієї дії, її тривалості та співвіднесеності з іншою дією.

Якщо в головному реченні дієслово-присудок стоїть у теперішньому або майбутньому часі, то в підрядному додатковому реченні вживається будь-яка часова форма залежно від змісту висловлювання:

She says (will say) that she learns English. — Вона каже (скаже), що вивчає англійську.She says (will say) that she learned English at school. — Вона каже (скаже), що вивчала

англійську в школі.She says (will say) that she will learn English next year. — Вона каже (скаже), що буде

вивчати англійську наступного року.2. Якщо присудок у головному реченні виражений одним з минулих часів, звичайно the

Past Indefi nite, то і в підрядному додатковому реченні дієслово-присудок вживається в одному з минулих часів: the Past Indefi nite, Past Continuous, Past Perfect або Future-in the-Past.

3. Якщо дієслово-присудок головного речення виражає минулу дію, а дія підрядного додат-кового речення відбувається в той самий період часу, то в підрядному реченні вживається the Past Indefi nite або the Past Continuous:

She said she learned English. — Вона сказала, що вивчає англійську.She said she was learning a poem by heart. — Вона сказала, що вчить вірш напам’ять.

4. Якщо дія підрядного додаткового речення відбулася раніше дії головного, то в підрядному реченні вживається the Past Perfect:

І knew that he had seen that fi lm. — Я знав, що він бачив той фільм.She said her son had broken the window. — Вона сказала, що її син розбив вікно.

5. Якщо в головному реченні дієслово-присудок виражає минулу дію, а дія підрядного до-даткового речення є майбутньою стосовно головного, то в підрядному реченні вживається the Future-in-the-Past:

I hoped she would give me the book. — Я сподівався, вона дасть мені книжку.Th e mother was sure he would write a letter on Sunday. — Мати була впевнена, він на-

пише листа у неділю.

Пряма і непряма мова (Direct and Indirect Speech)

1. При перетворенні прямої мови у непряму повідомлення прямої мови стає додатковим підрядним реченням, яке вводиться сполучником that. У розмовній мові сполучник that часто опускається:

Не says, “Th ey will go to the theatre next week”. He says that they will go to the theatre next week. He says they will go to the theatre next week.

2. При перетворенні прямої мови у непряму особові та присвійні займенники змінюються залежно від змісту:

He says, “I play with my friends”. He says that he plays with his friends.

3. Якщо у словах автора після дієслова to say вжито додаток (з прийменником to), то перед непрямою мовою замість дієслова to say вживається дієслово to tell, після якого додаток вжи-вається без прийменника:

Не says to them, “I can get the tickets”.He tells them that he can get the tickets.

4. Якщо у словах автора дієслово стоїть у минулому часі, то час дієслова прямої мови в не-прямій мові змінюється згідно правила узгодження часів:

Ann said, “I play tennis every day”. — Ганна сказа-ла: «Я граю в теніс кожного дня».

Ann said that she played tennis every day. — Ганна сказала, що грає в теніс кожного дня.

Th e man said, “I have lost the keys”. — Чоловік сказав: «Я загубив ключі».

Th e man said that he had lost the keys. — Чоловік сказав, що загубив ключі.

She said, “I will go for a holiday in August”. — Вона сказала: «Я поїду у відпустку в серпні».

She said that she would go for a holiday in August. — Вона сказала, що поїде у відпустку в серпні.

5. При перетворенні прямої мови в непряму вказівні займенники, а також прислівники місця і часу здебільшого змінюються так:

this на that today на that day

these на those tomorrow на the next day

here на there yesterday на the day before

now на then ago на before

He said, “I live in this house”. He said that he lived in that house.

She said, “I was here ten years ago”. She said that she had been there ten years before.

Питальні речення у непрямій мові

(Interrogative Sentences in Indirect Speech)

У непрямих запитаннях, на відміну від прямих, прямий порядок слів: підмет ставиться пе-ред присудком; у the Present і Past Indefi nite у непрямих запитаннях не вживається допоміжне дієслово to do.

Не asks me, “Where are you going?” He asks me where I am going.

Th e friend asks him, “When do you have breakfast?” Th e friend asks him when he has breakfast.

Якщо непрямою мовою передається загальне запитання, що починається допоміжним або модальним дієсловом, то непряме запитання вводиться сполучниками if або whether:

She asked me, “Do you play the piano?” She asked me if (whether) I played the piano.

Неособові форми дієслова (Non-Finite Forms of the Verb)

Неособові форми дієслова виражають дію без зазначення особи, числа і способу, не мають звичайних дієслівних часових форм, а лише вказують на час, співвіднесений з моментом дії, вираженої дієсловом в особовій формі. Неособові форми дієслова ніколи не бувають присуд-ком у реченні (тому й називаються ще непредикативними), а виконують функції інших членів речення. Це такі форми: інфінітив (the Infi nitive), герундій (the Gerund) і дієприкметник (the Participle).

Інфінітив уживається для утворення часових форм групи Indefi nite та наказового способу.

Page 80: Grammar+Tests [1]

То learn new words is useful (інфінітив у ролі підмета). — Вчити нові слова корисно. He is fond of singing (герундій у ролі додатка). — Він любить співати.Th e girl standing at the window is my friend (дієприкметник у ролі означення). — Дівчина,

яка стоїть біля вікна, моя подруга.She stood there thinking (дієприкметник у ролі обставини). — Вона стояла там замис-

лившись.

Інфінітив (The Infi nitive)

1. В англійській мові інфінітив має форми стану, а також часу. Але часова форма інфінітива, як і інших неособових форм, лише вказує на співвіднесеність з моментом дії, вираженої дієсло-вом в особовій формі. При цьому форми стану звичайно мають лише перехідні дієслова.

Форми інфінітива Активний стан Пасивний стан

Indefi nite to read [rJd] to go

to be read [red] —

Continuous to be reading to be going —

Perfect to have read to have gone

to have been read —

Perfect Continuous to have been reading to have been going __

2. Лише форми the Indefi nite Infi nitive активного і пасивного стану мають відповідні форми в українській мові:

to read — читати to be read — бути прочитанимto write — писати to be written — бути написаним

Уживання інфінітива

Інфінітив у реченні може бути: а) підметом:

То elect and to be elected to the parliament is the right of every citizen of Ukraine guaranteed by the Constitution. — Обирати і бути обраним до парламенту — це право кожного громадянина України, гарантоване Конституцією.

Службові частини мови

(The Structural Parts of Speech)

Прийменник (The Preposition)

1. Прийменники в англійській мові виражають різні відношення між словами у реченні чи словосполученні. Прийменники, як правило, багатозначні, внаслідок чого одному й тому самому прийменнику англійської мови відповідає кілька українських і навпаки.

2. На відміну від української, в англійській мові прийменник може стояти не лише перед словом, до якого відноситься, а й у кінці речення:

Page 93: Grammar+Tests [1]

97Граматика

Так, у спеціальних запитаннях прийменник зазвичай стоїть у кінці речення:Where are you going from? — Звідки ви йдете?Whom are you talking about? — Про кого ви говорите?

3. В означальних підрядних реченнях зі сполучними займенниками which, whom, that при-йменник ставиться після дієслова, але може стояти й перед займенником:

Th e house which he lives in is situated in this street. — Будинок, у якому він живе, розта-шований на цій вулиці.

4. В інфінітивних зворотах, що виконують функцію означення, прийменник ставиться в кінці:

Не had no pencil to write with. — У нього не було олівця, яким він міг би писати.5. В англійській мові прийменники підрозділяються на прийменники місця, напрямку та часу.

Прийменники місця (Prepositions of Place)

Cполучник (The Conjunction)

Сполучники вживаються для зв’язку членів речення і цілих речень у складних реченнях. Вони поділяються на прості (and, but, or, if та ін.); похідні (unless, however та ін.); складні (therefore, however, nevertheless та ін.) та складені (as soon as, in order to, as well as та ін.). Деякі складені сполучники називаються парними, тому що вони складаються з двох частин (both ... and — як.. так і; either... or — або ... або; neither ... nor — ні ... ні та ін.):

I’ll ring you up as soon as I receive your letter. — Я подзвоню тобі, як тільки одержу твого листа.

I know not only him but also his sister. — Я не знаю не лише його, але і його сестри. Both this and that exercise will be done in an hour. — Як ця, так і та вправи будуть

Cинтаксис

Речення (The Sentence)

Просте речення (The Simple Sentence)

Залежно від мети висловлювання розрізняють три основні типи речень: розповідні, питальні і спонукальні.

Кожне з них може бути стверджувальним і заперечним.При певній емоційній забарвленості, що передається інтонацією, будь-яке речення може

перетворитися в окличне. Після окличних речень ставиться знак оклику.

Page 98: Grammar+Tests [1]

102 Фонетика та граматика англійської мови

Розповідні реченняНе reads books every day. — Він читає книжки щодня.He does not read books every day. — Він не читає книжок щодня.

Питальні реченняDoes he read books every day? — Чи читає він книжки щодня?Does he not (Doesn’t he) read books every day? — Хіба він не читає книжок щодня?

Спонукальні реченняOpen the book. — Розгорніть книжку.Do not (Don’t) open the book. — He розгортайте книжку.

Окличні реченняWhat an interesting book you have brought! — Яку цікаву книжку ви принесли!How well she sings! — Як гарно вона співає!Oh, isn’t that interesting?! — О, хіба це не цікаво?!Stand up! — Встань(те)!

Розповідні речення (Declarative Sentences)

Для англійської мови характерний сталий порядок слів.Розповідні речення характеризуються прямим порядком слів. Його зміна може спричинити

перекручення змісту речення. При порушенні порядку слів в українській мові зазвичай змі-нюється лише логічний наголос:

Th e boy caught a fi sh. — Хлопець упіймав рибу. (Рибу впіймав хлопець.) A fi sh caught the boy. — Риба впіймала хлопця.

Для англійської мови звичайним вважається такий порядок слів: підмет, присудок, додаток, обставина:

Th e boy read a book yesterday. She saw a fi lm yesterday evening. He wrote a letter last Sunday.

Означення не має постійного місця і може стояти перед будь-яким членом речення, вира-женим іменником:

Th e boy read an interesting book last Sunday.Th is interesting book was written by a famous writer.

Розповідні заперечні речення

В англійському заперечному реченні, на відміну від українського, може бути лише одне заперечне слово. Такими словами можуть бути: заперечна частка not; заперечні займенники no (ніякий, не); nobody, no one (ніхто); nothing (ніщо, нічого); заперечні прислівники never (ніколи); nowhere (ніде); заперечний сполучник neither ... nor (ні ... ні).

Порівняйте.І never anywhere told anybody anything about it. — Я ніколи ніде нікому нічого не говорив про це.

Питальні речення (Interrogative Sentences)

В англійській мові розрізняють чотири типи питальних речень: загальні, спеціальні, роз’єднувальні й альтернативні.

Загальні запитання (General Questions)

У загальних запитаннях допоміжне або модальне дієслово, що входить до присудка, ста-виться на початку речення перед підметом. Якщо у складі присудка немає допоміжного або модального дієслова, то перед підметом ставиться допоміжне дієслово do (does) або did, а після нього — основне дієслово у формі інфінітива без частки to. Решта членів речення стоять у та-кому ж порядку, як і в розповідному реченні.

Присудок ставиться на початку речення, якщо він виражений дієсловами to be або to have. Проте в сучасній англійській мові спостерігається тенденція вживати допоміжне дієслово do, хоча присудок виражений дієсловом to have:

Have you a dictionary? = Do you have a dictionary?На загальні запитання звичайно даються короткі відповіді, що складаються зі слів yes або

nо, підмета, вираженого відповідним особовим займенником, і допоміжного або модального дієслова, вжитого у запитанні.

У заперечних відповідях частка not зазвичай зливається з допоміжним або модальним діє-словом:

Do you speak English? Yes, I do. No, I do not. (No, I don’t.)Is she reading? Yes, she is. No, she is not. (No, she isn’t.)Will Nick go to school tomorrow? Yes, he will. No, he will not. (No, he won’t.)Have you read this book? Yes, I have. No, I have not. (No, I haven’t.)Can you speak English? Yes, I can. No, I cannot. (No, I can’t.)Will you go to school tomorrow? Yes, I shall. No, I shall not (No, I shan’t)

Заперечна форма загальних запитань

Слід звернути увагу на заперечну форму загальних запитань, яка утворюється за допомогою частки not, що ставиться після підмета перед основним дієсловом. Такі запитання виражають здивування і відповідають українським, що починаються словами хіба, невже:

Do you not know him? Невже (Хіба) ти його не знаєш?Don’t you know him?

У відповідях на заперечні запитання в українській і англійській мовах вживання слів yes, no не збігається. Якщо в англійській мові у ствердній відповіді завжди вживається yes, а в за-перечній — nо, то в українській ні може вживатися в обох випадках:

Didn’t you read this book? — Yes, I did. No, I didn’t.Хіба ти не читав цю книгу? — Ні, читав. Ні (Так), не читав.

Page 100: Grammar+Tests [1]

104 Фонетика та граматика англійської мови

Спеціальні запитання (Special Questions)

Порядок слів у спеціальних запитаннях такий самий, як і в загальних, але перед допоміжним або модальним дієсловом стоїть питальне слово (або група слів):

When do you get up? — Коли ти встаєш? What do you read? — Що ти читаєш? Where do you live? — Де ти живеш?What story did the teacher read to you yesterday? — Яке оповідання прочитав вам учора

вчитель?Why do you cry? — Чому ти плачеш?

Спеціальні запитання до підмета починаються питальними займенниками who хто або what що. Вони виконують функцію підмета. Після цих займенників ставиться дієслово, що виконує функцію присудка. Таким чином, у спеціальних запитаннях, що стосуються підмета, зберігається прямий порядок слів:

Who is reading a book? Who teaches you? Who can speak English? What stands in the corner?

Прямий порядок слів зберігається також у спеціальних запитаннях, що стосуються означен-ня підмета. Вони починаються питальними словами what (який); which (котрий, який); whose (чий); how many, how much (скільки):

What pencil is on the table? Whose child goes to school?Which pupil is the best?

На спеціальні запитання, як правило, даються повні відповіді. При цьому члени речення, виражені іменниками, замінюються займенниками:

What did the teacher read to the pupils yesterday? — He read an interesting book about animals.

Можливі також відповіді, що складаються з одного слова (або групи слів), якого (яких) стосується запитання:

— When did the teacher read you an interesting story about animals? — Коли вчитель прочитав вам цікаве оповідання про тварин?

— Yesterday. — Учора.Відповіді на запитання, що стосується підмета або його означення, звичайно даються в ко-

роткій формі. Вони складаються з підмета і присудка, вираженого допоміжним чи модальним дієсловом:

Who is reading a book? — My sister is.Who can do it? — He can. What pencil is on the table? — A red pencil is.

Page 101: Grammar+Tests [1]

105Граматика

Роз’єднувальні запитання (Disjunctive Questions)

You don’t speak French, do you? — No, I do not. Yes, I do. Ви не говорите французькою, чи не так? — Ні, не говорю. Ні, говорю.

Питання Відповідь

+ –згода з тим, хто гово-

рить

незгода з тим, хто

говорить

You speak English, Ви говорите англійсь-кою мовою,

don’t you?

чи не так?

No, I don’t.Ні, не говорю.

– +

You don’t speak English, Ви не говорите англій-ською мовою,

do you?

чи не так?

No, I do not. Ні (Так), не говорю.

Yes, I do. Ні, говорю.

Альтернативні запитання (Alternative Questions)

Альтернативне запитання складається з двох загальних запитань, з’єднаних сполучником or. Хоча альтернативні запитання починаються з допоміжного чи модального дієслова, як і загальні, за змістом вони є спеціальними, тому вимагають повної відповіді. Відповіді yes або nо логічно неможливі, як і в українській мові:

Is he a teacher or a doctor? — He is a doctor. Which do you like, tea or coff ee? — I like coff ee. Will you go to school or home? — I shall go home. Did you speak to him, or did your brother? — My brother did.

Page 102: Grammar+Tests [1]

106 Фонетика та граматика англійської мови

Спонукальні речення (Imperative Sentences)

Спонукальні речення виражають наказ, прохання, пораду, дозвіл, бажання мовця. У запе-речній формі спонукальні речення можуть виражати заборону:

Read the article, please. — Прочитай, будь ласка, статтю.Will you come here? — Підійдіть сюди, будь ласка. Let’s go there. — Давай підемо туди. Won’t you open the window? — Чи не відчините вікно?Don’t speak Ukrainian at English lessons. — Не говоріть українською мовою на уроках

англійської мови.

Складносурядне речення (The Compound Sentence)

Складносурядне речення складається з двох або більше не підпорядкованих одне одному речень, які об’єднуються за допомогою сполучників або без них. Між реченнями, що входять до складу безсполучникового складносурядного речення, ставиться крапка з комою:

І rang him up and he came to me in an hour. I rang him up; he came to me in an hour.

Складнопідрядне речення (The Complex Sentence)

Складнопідрядне речення складається з головного (the Principal Clause) та одного чи кількох підрядних (the Subordinate Clauses), які приєднуються до головного за допомогою сполучників підрядності або сполучникових слів.

Підрядні речення виконують функцію одного з членів речення і, відповідно до цього, бувають підметовими, присудковими, додатковими, означальними й обставинними:

It is strange that he is а good sportsman. (підметове) — Дивно, що він добрий спортсмен. Th e question is whether he knows French. (присудкове) — Питання в тому, чи знає він

французьку мову.She told us that she felt ill. (додаткове) — Вона сказала, що почуває себе хворою.I have bought the book that I was looking for. (означальне) — Я купив книгу, яку шукав.As I was going home, І met my old friend. (обставинне) — Коли я йшов додому, зустрів

свого давнього друга.
