Rule # 10 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM…

• by determining how a word functions as a part of speech

• Example– Identify the part of

speech of each underlined word or word group in this sentence.

-The roly-poly puppies frequently stumble and fall.

Rule # 9 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM

• By turning fragments and run-ons into complete sentences

• By knowing the difference between a sentence, a phrase, and a clause

• Examples• Pleased by the

applause of the audience the violinist played an encore. Fix the run-on.

Rule # 8 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM

• By making subjects and verbs agree in number, person, and gender

• By making pronouns and antecedents agree in number, person, and gender

• Examples - Read the statement. Identify the error in agreement. – The store, the hotel, and

the airport is all in a ten-mile radius of the beach.

– To apply for the scholarship, a student must submit at least four samples of their work.

Rule # 7 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM

• By using the correct form of regular and irregular verbs

• Examples-Write the correct form of the verb in parentheses.

• By proofreading sentences for correct pronoun forms (nominative vs. objective)

• Examples - Revise each sentence by supplying the correct pronoun form.– Steve showed the

negatives to Cecelia and I.

Rule # 5 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM

• By not dangling or misplacing a modifier

• Examples - Examine the image. What is the dangling/misplaced modifier? How can you change the sentence so that the meaning is clear?

Rule # 4 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM

• By properly capitalizing sentences

• Examples - Correct the capitalization errors within this sentence:

• Our september trip to ireland included a stay in kilkee, a coastal village.

• Examples-add the appropriate end punctuation.
