2) Dr. Ulrich Wernery is a researcher at the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai. He has done research on camels for the past 15 years. Last year, he visited Kazakhstan, where people use camels instead of cows for milk. In Kazakhstan, people who have diabetes control the disease by drinking camel’s milk.

3) Dr. Wernery started doing his own research on camel’s milk last October. He says, “There are lots of reasons why this milk is healthier for humans. The first reason is that it contains more Vitamin C than cow’s milk (3 ½ times more!). Second, it contains a special insulin that the human body can use, so a person with diabetes may not need to take insulin injections. Third, camel’s milk is very similar to human milk. Many people who have health problems with cow’s milk are able to drink camel’s milk.”

4) There are other good reasons for using camels instead of cows for milk in the UAE. The desert is not a natural place for cows to live. Cows need a lot of water everyday, or their milk will stop or become bad. Camels, on the other hand, can produce 15 to 20 liters of milk per day and feed their babies in the middle of the summer heat. They can live for 10 days without water and still produce the same amount of good quality milk as they usually produce.

5) Larry Stafford, manager for Al Ain Dairies says, “I know nothing about the benefits of camel’s milk. People here like cow’s milk.” He said the cow’s milk industry is very big, and there is no need to sell camel’s milk.

Reading Task Two: Read the passage, and then answer the questions that follow.

1) The Olympic Games were the most important sporting event of the ancient world. For almost 1200 years, people from all across the country of Greece gathered (came together) to enjoy exciting sporting activities. But how did the Olympic Games begin?

2) In 776 BC, several groups of Greeks were at war. A Greek leader decided to make a treaty, or an agreement, with the kings from the fighting cities. In this treaty, they agreed to end fighting in all of Greece during the time of special games. At these games, the people that were fighting realized that they had a lot of things in common with their enemies. So, from this “sporting” agreement, the ancient Olympic Games helped to unite different (and sometimes fighting) sportsmen in a peaceful way.

3) The very first Olympics were held in Greece in the city of Athens. The Games lasted one day and there was only one event: running. This was called a marathon. Slowly, over the years, the Games grew from a one-day celebration of athletics to a five-day festival which happened every four years. In total, the ancient Olympic Games grew to 10 events, including: running, jumping, boxing, and horseracing.

4) All Greeks could participate in the Olympic Games. However, organizers did not allow women to take part, except as owners in the horse races. Women were also forbidden to watch the Games. They had games of their own, the Heraia. These “female Games” were held every four years in honor of the ancient Greek goddess Hera.

5) One month before the Games began, the athletes (sportsmen) arrived. The sporting events began with an oath by the athletes, or a promise that they would participate with honor. The winners enjoyed many rewards and there were great celebrations in their hometowns.

6) The Olympic Games lasted for twelve centuries and came to an end in 393 A.D. There were two main reasons for this. First, young people became interested in cultural activities, such as literature and art. This took their attention away from physical sports. Next, when the Romans conquered, or took control of, Greece, they replaced athletes with slaves (workers who are not paid). The slaves had to fight against wild animals, and many people enjoyed this new type of “sport.” This was a big change from the honor and fair play that defined the Olympics. One of the emperors of Rome, Theodosius the Great, commanded an end to the Olympic Games.
