MOVIE MANIA: APPLYING LITERARY

TECHNIQUE TO MOVIES

Frozen, Inside out, Shrek! Need we say more? ANIMATED FILMS, especially the ones produced by Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks, are one of the most POPULAR entertainment media among children today. The characters, visuals, plot and songs are just a few of the many reasons why these movies are loved. Before you belt out “Let it Go...Let it Go….” - did you know that these films could not have been produced without a few basic SKILLS? CHARACTERISATION, writing DIALOGUE, and PLOT building are just a few examples! Those are the very same skills and techniques that our students have been taught at The Writer’s Place. We aim to DEMONSTRATE and help our young movie lovers UNDERSTAND how the techniques they have already been taught are APPLIED to such movies. During this workshop, students will

✐ Watch and analyze short animated films. ✐ Have the opportunity to write their own dialogue script. ✐ Engage in Role Playing: Act out characters of their own. ✐ Apply writing skills: Creating a plot for a film on their own

Through various Fun activities, students will be taught the essential skills needed for the challenging components of Paper 2. They will get their hands on fictional and non-fictional passages. *One activity includes students bringing their own magazine or newspaper article to create their very own cloze passages! Skills taught:

✐ Understanding parts of a speech to aid cloze passage syntax

✐ Using contextual clues ✐ Searching for information quickly by recognizing the main

idea and details

Students who: ✐ Have difficulty

comprehending passages

✐ Need to strengthen their grammar

✐ Are not consistent in scoring well in these areas

5-DAY CREATIVE WRITING FOR

NEW STUDENTS

A great opportunity for those who like to experience just how we instill that knack for writing. Children will be mastering basic writing techniques and applying them in their compositions. Grammar Rescue!

Many children dislike grammar because it is often viewed as boring and tedious. The reality is that grammar is frighteningly important for it is the foundation of English! Grammar can be likened to piling works done before any building is constructed. The process is often unpleasant and causes great inconvenience and discomfort. However, without a strong foundation, buildings will not last. The Writer’s Place to the rescue! We have simplified and made grammar fuss-free. Guaranteed! Common mistakes explored: children will be made aware of common errors that they aren’t even aware of!

Elementary class (P2-P3) ✐ Young learners who

are not able to identify and apply parts of a speech.

✐ Upper Primary

students who have yet to master the fundamentals of grammar.

Intermediate class (P4-P5)

✐ Students who have a

good grasp of basic grammar and are looking to form complex and mature sentences. Especially useful for students who want to do well in sentence synthesis!

SYNTHESIS AND TRANSFORMATION

Synthesis and Transformation are big words that may sound daunting, but it just means adding and changing sentences! Students will become master transformers in this class, learning the critical ability to combine and alter sentences whilst keeping the meaning intact! They will learn: ✐ To identify active verbs, reported pronouns and reported

verbs ✐ How and when to use the correct tenses ✐ Understanding the different types of questions they will

encounter ✐ Various sentence structures… yes, this is useful when writing

compositions too!

PSLE INTENSIVE CREATIVE WRITING

This course goes beyond helping your child write a complete composition with impressive vocabulary. It aims to impart the OOMPH into your child’s writing, setting it apart from the scores of other compositions and bringing it ever closer to that elusive A*. Crucial Skills covered include designing an alternative story, creating an unexpected ending and much more! ✐ Concentrate on IMPORTANT elements in writing e.g.

characterization, beginnings and endings ✐ Overview of a GOOD story ✐ Deepen children’s THINKING PROCESS in plot development and

how to think out of the box! ✐ Significant amount of time will be dedicated to developing

content of their story ✐ Group work (encourages children to learn from one another)
