Complete Subject and Predicate

Simple Subject and Simple Predicate

Remember! The simple subject and the simple predicate are often (but not always) right next to one another!

it is the main noun, without modifiers, that the sentence is about or that is doing something in the sentence; it answers the question, “what jumped?”

it is the main verb without the modifiers; it answers the question, “what about the fox?

Direct and Indirect Objects

The skunk in the log gave the fox a fright.

it receives the action of the verb; it answers the question: “Gave what?” The skunk gave a fright.

it tells to whom or what the action is performed; it answers the question: “gave the fright to what?” The skunk gave a fright to the fox.
