Graham is a jewel of North Central Texas, offering a quality of life depicted in movies and Norman Rockwell paintings. Our town is unique is so many ways — our history, outdoor amenities, medical services, etc. — but it is the way of life that makes Graham special. We are a closely knit community that helps one another. We are a community that is progressive and blessed with visionary lead-ers who look for the next course of action to ensure that our community stays vibrant.
One of the recent steps in securing Graham’s future is with the addition of the North Central Texas College Graham Campus. We now have educational opportunities for many of our young students and older individuals seeking new skills. By providing this key com-ponent to our community, we will be able to grow our own job and business opportunities. Our first class of LVN students will graduate in the spring from our state-of-the-art nursing education facility on NCTC’s campus.
Graham has a population just under 10,000, but our amenities and services are comparable to a much larger city. Some of the latest projects recently completed or soon to be finished include renovations to the Graham Memorial Auditorium, the Graham Municipal Airport expansion, the Wellness Center, and Graham High School’s $30 million renovation and addition. Other key projects commenc-ing include a municipal master plan and an aggressive water treatment plant renovation.
The City of Graham is involved in many areas that enhance our quality of life. We are proud of this place, and we welcome you to stay and enjoy the good life in Graham.

T he story of Young County, Texas, begins with the dramatic struggles of frontier living in the 1850s. The establishment
of Fort Belknap in 1851 provided the first focal point and military presence in the area, which at the time contained a blend of both frontier settlers and Native Americans. During the fort’s eight-year mission, it saw the open-ing and closure of two nearby reservations and the 1856 establishment of Young County, named for Texas Ranger and pioneer Col. William Cooke Young.

The closure of Fort Belknap in 1859 and the demands of the Civil War left Young County with only the state’s Frontier Regiment to keep the peace. Hostility broke out in October 1864 when a raiding party consisting of 600 to 1,200 Native Americans attacked settlements along Elm Creek. While the Elm Creek Raid was short lived, it resulted in the death of seven settlers and five members of the Frontier Regiment. Six women and chil-dren from the frontier families were taken captive; the stories of their captivity and release are now legendary.
In 1869, brothers Gustavous A. and Edwin S. Graham came to North Texas. The two purchased a salt works on Salt Creek in 1871. They are credited with drilling the first gas well in Texas, having stumbled upon it while drilling for salt water and recognizing what it was from previous experiences with oil and gas in Kentucky. The Grahams then turned their attention to surveying the site of a new town. With a downtown square more than a mile in circumference and streets wide
enough for a wagon to turn around, the town of Graham, Texas, was established in 1872.
The cattle industry was an important part of Young County’s economy in the late 1800s, and the organization that became the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association was founded in Graham in 1877. Established to protect local herds from cattle rustlers, the association had charter members whose brands are listed in the Young County Brand Book. These early cattlemen are important figures in Texas history. Among them was James C. Loving, whose father helped found the famous Goodnight-Loving Cattle Trail and is credited by many as a pioneer of long-distance cattle drives.
The organization that became the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association was founded in Graham in 1877.

Oil production emerged in the early 1900s, becoming the key industry in Young County. The establishment of the first oil well in the county is credited to Bruce Knight in 1904, and commercial oil production south of Graham began on July 4, 1920, with McCluskey #1, a well that produced 500,000 barrels of crude in its first eight months. During the 1920s and 1930s, Young County alternated with two other counties as the richest producing oil reserve in Texas. Wealth from the new industry paved the streets of Graham with brick in 1923.
Thanks to the pioneering spirit of its residents and the philanthropy of the Graham families, Graham, Texas, has grown from a frontier settlement to a thriving community. The restored town square pays tribute to a rich history, as Graham looks forward to writ-ing more chapters of success in the future.

Housing in and around Graham offers wonderful variety that spans from brand-new construction to lovely, vintage homes from the early 1900s. Typical prices for single-family homes range from around $45,000 for quaint, two-bedroom cottages to $200,000 and up for new four-bedroom homes. Adding to the diversity is the continued development of new homes in the southern part of the town, including 1,379-square-foot, two-bedroom townhouses selling for $145,000 per unit.
The sprawling ranches and small farms surrounding Graham offer rural living at its finest and come in a wide spectrum of sizes and prices. Attractive lakefront homes and cabins line the shore of Lake Graham north-west of town, with three-bedroom homes starting from $130,000. Small-acreage tracts are available for those who want to build cus-tom homes in the wide-open spaces; average prices begin at $2,000 per acre.

ExPansions and oPPortunitiEsThe economic picture is bright in Graham,
and economic development organizations and leaders are looking to grow business opportu-nities with a targeted strategy.
The Graham area is looking to expand its retail space. Four national retail stores have been added in the last three years. And the community will continue to look for comple-menting businesses for both the downtown shopping area and the planned development area at the south end of Highway 16.
Tourism continues to be a focus for the area as well, and the Tourism Bureau is mar-keting the area to tourists. The Young County Arena and the Wildcatter Ranch & Resort are the biggest draws for events and general visi-tors. The multi-purpose arena plays host to a wide range of horse, rodeo, and other events and is quickly being recognized as one of the premier arenas in the region.
Local partnerships have been an impor-tant factor in growth. The Graham Industrial Association plans to partner with the new North Central Texas College branch campus in Graham on job development and vocational education programs. The new NCTC campus has been improved through the Economic
Development Corporation and a combina-tion of private and public donations, as the historic library was converted into a high-tech lab and instructional facility for a nursing program, and in August 2009, a vocational nursing program began with 30 students.
The Graham Industrial Association is work-ing to capitalize on opportunities in a number of ways, promoting the region’s message to new and potential businesses. Through the private Industrial Association and the tax-funded Economic Development Corporation, Graham can offer businesses incentives in financing, grants, land, and buildings. They also work closely with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development in applying the many programs that are offered through the state. In addition, the Industrial Association has taken an active role with the Economic Development Department at Oncor Electric Delivery through participation in large-scale trade shows, allow-ing them to establish contact with companies that could potentially locate in Graham.
The Graham area has seen positive signs of growth. One is the new Holiday Inn Express that opened on the north side of town. With the growth of the Young County Arena, a need was identified for more and better facilities to
house the growing number of people partici-pating in arena events. Surrounding cities are seeing huge drops in sales tax revenue, but Graham has been staying at or above previous years’ levels. In this economy, local leaders see that as a very positive sign that the region is on the right track.

I n May 2007, the voters of Graham overwhelmingly approved a $30 mil-lion bond to enhance and expand Graham High School. Working with
an architectural firm and construction com-panies specializing in institutional design, Graham ISD began the construction process in late 2007. After more than two years of planning and hard work, GHS has now com-pleted its amazing transformation.
The project included both renovations to the original 1938 building and the construc-tion of a brand-new, 104,000-square-foot addition. Changes within the original build-ing included the relocation of the library to a former gymnasium, the expansion of administrative areas, and a reconfiguration of the first- and second-floor layouts. Within the new expansion, students and faculty now enjoy 15 new classrooms, four new computer
labs, additional science labs, a fine arts wing with a performance hall, and a brand-new competition gymnasium.
Other changes at GHS include a new softball field and football field house, an expansion of the Career & Technology facility, and the renovation of the 1963 competition gymnasium. The project was completed in December 2009.

north cEntral tExas collEGE oPEns nEW camPus in Graham
Located at the former Shawnee Elementary, the Graham Campus is the newest addition to the North Central Texas College family.
The Graham Knowledge Base Foundation funded the renovation and created the facili-ties, the technology, and the distance-educa-tion capabilities for instruction and workforce training. The facility has over 49,800 square feet of instructional and administrative space, including a large lecture hall, a performance stage, distance-education classrooms, a state-of-the-art culinary arts center, and a computer lab.
More than 50 community college classes were offered from fall 2007 through summer
2008, providing oppor-tunities for community and dual-credit students. Lifelong Learning courses have also been offered, including culinary arts, computer classes, and certified nursing assis-tance programs.
The Graham Economic Improvement Corporation and the Graham Industrial Board provided funding for the renovation of a historic
library on the campus into facilities for a nurs-ing program. In August 2009, NCTC started an LVN program on the Graham Campus in this beautifully restored building. The facility was designed with historic preservation in mind, but offers the latest in technology and training. An all-purpose science lab has also been included in this project.
The future is bright for the new partner-ship of North Central Texas College and Graham. The long-awaited dreams of this vibrant and progressive community have become a reality.

Graham Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is a 42-bed, nonprofit municipal hospital owned by the city of Graham. The hospital operates independently of tax revenue and is governed by a board of directors appointed by the Graham City Council.
GrowthOver the last 10 years, GRMC has evolved
into an award-winning, state-of-the-art facility that serves all of Young County with pride and distinction.
Much of GRMC’s growth is due to the activities of the Graham Hospital Foundation, which has raised more than $6.8 million in funds toward improving the hospital’s facili-ties. Since its inception in 1997, the founda-tion has raised the money to renovate much of the hospital, including creating a trauma Level IV emergency room and new surgery, radiol-ogy, and laboratory suites.

Wellness CenterGRMC completed construction on a new
Fitness & Rehabilitation Center in March 2008. The new facility includes cardio work-out equipment, free-weight training, aerobics and water aerobics, and an Olympic-style lap pool. The new center also provides expanded and improved cardiac rehabilitation, occupa-tional therapy, respiratory therapy, and physi-cal therapy services.
Women’s CenterOpened in the spring of 2008, the
Women’s Center was constructed to meet the obstetrical needs of patients in Graham and the surrounding areas. This 16,000-square-foot facility provides women’s health services like comprehensive obstetrical care, including modern labor, delivery, and recovery (LDR) suites; postpartum care; and post-operative care following select same-day surgeries.
Award-Winning CareIn recognition of GRMC’s efforts to improve
patient care, the TMF Health Quality Institute (formerly the Texas Medical Foundation) awarded the hospital the Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Achievement Award in 2009. This coveted award is given only to hospitals in the state who exemplify compli-ance with quality measures, and acknowl-edges improvements in care related to acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia. Old Post Office Museum and Art Center
Located within Graham’s former U.S. Post Office (1937–1992), the Old Post Office Museum & Art Center is an education in the history and culture of Young County. Focusing primarily on the period of 1850 to the pres-ent, the museum provides historical exhibits that help visitors understand the struggles and triumphs of those who developed the North Texas frontier. Inspiring fine art displays cap-ture the essence of Young County’s culture and growth, including famed regional painter Alexandre Hogue’s 1939 mural, Oilfields of Graham. The Young County CourthouseThe reorganization of Young County in
1874 made Graham the county’s second seat. In 1884, the county embarked on building its third courthouse: a $68,000 structure that was paid for over a 20-year period. The building was razed after the present courthouse was completed in 1932, but the iconic sandstone arch of the entrance was preserved and is a centerpiece of the downtown square.
The present courthouse is both architectur-ally and historically interesting. Designed by the firm of Withers & Thompson, the exterior of the four-story courthouse is constructed of Marble Falls granite and Indiana limestone. Bas-relief panels depicting the development of the county are carved in the exterior walls, and the vintage 1930s art deco interior includes the original fixtures and furnishings.
Young County Veteran’s MemorialThe Young County Veteran’s Memorial
honors an entire century of men and women from the county who served in the armed forces. Spanning the years of 1900–1999, the stone wall displays the names of over 5,400 veterans who served in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and peace time. The center section, which honors those killed in action, was dedicated on Memorial Day in 2000, and the outer wings were dedicated on Veterans Day the same year. Historic Walking and Driving Tours
The Young County Historical Commission created a historic walking tour of the largest downtown in the United States and a driving tour of Young County so visitors and residents can learn about Graham’s history. The tours are available at the Chamber of Commerce or the CVB/Main Street Office; driving tours are $5. Call 866-549-0401 for more information.
Fort BelknapFort Belknap was established in 1851
as a second-line frontier fort to safe-guard settlers. Its mission became more
complex in 1854 with the establishment of the Upper and Lower Brazos River Indian Reservation, when the fort was tasked to protect both the settlers and the Native Americans from each other. The reservations were dissolved in July 1859, and their closure led to the decom-missioning of Fort Belknap. The fort was pressed back into service for six months in 1867 but was ultimately abandoned and fell into ruins.
In celebration of the Texas Centennial, portions of the fort were restored or reconstructed in 1936. The fort’s original magazine structure is still standing, and the reconstruction included the corn-house, commissary, two barracks, and the well. A period kitchen house was also added.
Fort Belknap is one of eight posts along the Texas Forts Trail, a recom-mended 650-mile driving loop within a 29-county region of Central West Texas. The Texas Forts Trail was the pilot proj-ect of an initiative to revive the Texas Department of Transportation’s “10 Travel Trails of Texas.” Since the Texas Forts Trail was revived in 1999, the sites on the trail have seen a significant increase in visitation, and both residents and Texas visitors have become more aware of these important icons of Lone Star State history.
