Ryan Ferns is a 2001 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He participated in several sports including basketball, soccer and track. In his senior year, he won the 100-meter state championship. He was also a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, he continued his education at Wheeling Jesuit University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree in 2005 and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2007.

Ryan began his career working as a physical therapist in a variety of settings throughout West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. It was during this time that Ryan developed a strong urge to be a part of change in his home state of West Virginia. Realizing that many of his former classmates had moved on to other areas of the country, Ryan determined that it was a lack of opportunity here at home that was the cause.

Ryan saw serving his hometown and state in the West Virginia Legislature as a pathway to make the changes necessary to create new job opportunities here at home. In 2010, he committed to run for a seat in the West Virginia House of Delegates. He won that election and was re-elected in 2012. Also during that time, Ryan invested in the community by starting a health and wellness business called The Ryan Ferns Healthplex. During his second term in the House of Delegates Ryan became frustrated by the House leadership's lack of willingness to move West Virginia forward, and in 2013, Ryan changed his political party affiliation and announced he was running for a seat in the State Senate. The 2014 election saw Ryan promoted to the State Senate, and after serving two years as the Health Committee Chairman, he was named the Majority Leader of the Senate, where he serves today.

She also plays the piano, takes voice lessons, volunteers at Wheeling Hospital, volunteers as an assistant dance teacher at the Oglebay Institute School of Dance and volunteers as an assistant yoga teacher for pediatric patients. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, baking with her friends and spending time with her family (without whom none of this would be possible). Lexie wants to remind everyone to “not just break out of the proverbial box, but to tap dance on it when necessary.” Upon graduation from Central, Lexie plans to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant with a minor in Spanish. She will be entering Seton Hill University in the fall as a student in their Direct-Admit Physician Assistant Program. Her ultimate career aspiration is to work in a pediatric hospital serving critically ill children.

“If your dreams don’t scare you, then they are not big enough.” During the past four years at Central, my dreams have been achieved and surpassed beyond my wildest imagination. Central is not just a school building, but a place filled with knowledge, love and compassion experienced by all who enter the front doors. The teachers, administration, staff and students all hold a special place in my heart. I have been blessed by the opportunities that Central has given me. God Bless and Go Knights!” — Lexie Kosanovic, Valedictorian, Class of 2017

“Family, Faith, and tradition are three words that distinguish the unique environment found at Wheeling Central. The teachers, faculty, and student body invest their time, talent, and compassion in helping one another be their best. I’m very grateful for my experiences at Wheeling Central and for becoming a part of the Central family.”
