Message from the Vice-Chancellor

I am delighted to welcome you here for this graduation ceremony.

Well done to all who are graduating today for successfully completing your course. At this time we must also acknowledge the Swinburne academic and professional staff who made your learning experience possible, as well as parents, spouses, siblings, partners and friends whose encouragement has played a crucial role in your success.

Today your graduation allows us to celebrate your achievements. You have fulfilled the requirements of a demanding course of study with focus and discipline and your reward is an excellent education.

Such an education is all the more important today because of the need to respond to a rapidly changing world. Within our knowledge‑based society, many people are engaged in ‘knowledge‑based’ work, across a range of fields and disciplines.

The achievement of high quality education and training positions you to attain greater prosperity and participate more fully in a dynamic knowledge‑based global economy. Swinburne is consistently named as one of the top universities in the world according to the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities. Therefore, I hope you take pride in knowing that you graduate from Swinburne with a high‑quality education, obtained from a world‑ranked university.

I strongly encourage all of you who graduate today to address the new challenges that face your community and make a positive contribution. I urge you to seize these opportunities and help lead our society into a promising future.

History of the universityThe Swinburnes lived for many generations in Northumberland, in the north of England. In early times, the family owned a castle on the banks of the Swin Burn, the brook of the boars. By 1245 the Swinburne coat of arms was ‘Gules: three boars heads argent’.

George Swinburne arrived in Melbourne in 1886, aged twenty-five. His early days in Melbourne were spent setting up gas plants and bringing gas‑light to the cities and towns. As his business stature increased, he entered State Parliament and became a minister.

Swinburne was established as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne and the first students were enrolled in 1909, when classes began in carpentry, plumbing and blacksmithing. In 1913 the institution changed its name to Swinburne Technical College, to commemorate the Honourable George Swinburne. Soon afterwards, a boys’ junior technical school and the first girls’ technical school were established.

Following an extensive reorganisation of advanced education in Victoria in the late 1970s, Swinburne was given the power to grant bachelor degrees. The first of these was awarded at a conferring ceremony held on 21 May 1981 at the Camberwell Civic Centre.

In 1992, Swinburne achieved university status with the passage by the Parliament of Victoria of the Swinburne University of Technology Act. This marked not only Swinburne’s distinguished history as a provider of further education, but the beginning of a new period of growth and innovation for Swinburne.

In recent years, Swinburne has progressed to become one of the world’s leading research‑intensive teaching universities and a leader in online education, expanding the educational opportunities available to a new generation of learners.

Swinburne’s emphasis is on high‑quality, engaged teaching and research in science, technology and innovation – teaching and research that makes a difference in the lives of individuals and contributes to national economic and social objectives.

Swinburne holds a unique place among educational institutions in Australia in the link that persists between it and the founder and his family. The conferring of a modification of the family’s coat of arms preserves and strengthens that link.

The arms The basic colours of red and white, and the cinquefoils charged on the shield, commemorate the arms of the Swinburne family.

The crest The demi‑Boar and the cinquefoil perpetuate the Swinburne connection; the book is symbolic of learning.

The mottoThe College of Arms’ translation of the motto is: Achievement through learning.

The flag The basic colours of red and white with cinquefoils.

The mace and the chair In universities, a mace is used as a symbol of institutional authority and it is carried in procession before the Chancellor as a symbolic weapon of protection. The ceremonial items of the office of the Chancellor of Swinburne University were designed by Professor Emeritus Helmut Lueckenhausen, former Pro Vice‑Chancellor, Internationalisation. Fabricated from Queensland silky oak, sterling silver and gold, the mace has eight facets resolving as an open silver finial and crown which contains a carving of the rampant boar from the Swinburne coat of arms. The chair also has eight divisions on the seat and back with an engraved silver boar and the Southern Cross on the upper back. Artists and craftspeople involved in the project with the designer were Ian Higgs, cabinet maker, Geoffrey Dunne, Swinburne design graduate, Sue Wraight, netsuke carver and Hendrik Forster and Marion Marshall, silversmiths. Civic contributions made towards the purchase of these items included the former City of Prahran for the University for the Mace, the former City of Hawthorn for the Chancellor’s Chair and the former Shire of Lillydale for the Chancellor’s Gown.


Academic regaliaThe academic dress worn at Swinburne today is a modification of everyday dress worn by scholars and teachers in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It consists of a gown and a scarf‑like stole or hood, which is a remnant of the cowl that was once worn to cover the head and shoulders to keep off the rain and snow. Trencher caps or bonnets are worn as indicated below, with the tassel down over the left eye and in a vertical position.

The style of academic dress adopted by Swinburne University of Technology is based on that of the University of Oxford.

Honorary doctorate A cardinal red gown with silver grey front and sleeve facings. The hood is cardinal red, fully lined in silver grey and is worn with grey showing on both shoulders. A tudor bonnet with a silver cord and tassel is worn.

Honorary master degree A cardinal red gown with silver‑grey front facings. The hood is cardinal red, fully lined in silver grey and is worn with silver grey showing on both shoulders. A black trencher with a silver cord and tassel is worn.

Doctor of philosophy A black gown faced with chilli red and silver grey. The hood is chilli red, fully lined in silver grey and is worn with silver grey showing on both shoulders. A tudor bonnet with a scarlet cord and tassel is worn.

Professional doctorate A black gown faced with chilli red and the discipline colour. The hood is chilli red, fully lined in the discipline colour, and is worn with the discipline colour showing on both shoulders. A tudor bonnet with a scarlet cord and tassel is worn.

Double masters degree A black master gown, hood and trencher. The hood is black, and fully lined with the colours of both disciplines. It is worn with the colours showing on both shoulders.

Masters degree A black master gown, hood and trencher. The hood is black, fully lined with the discipline colour, and is worn with the colour showing on both shoulders.

Graduate diploma A black gown, stole and trencher. The stole is black, lined with the discipline colour, and is worn with the colour showing on both sides.

Graduate certificate A black gown, stole and trencher. The stole is black, lined with the discipline colour, and is worn with the colour showing on the left hand side.

Bachelor honours degree A black gown, hood and trencher. The hood is black, half lined with the discipline colour and laced with a silver braid, and is worn with the colour showing on the left‑hand side.

Double bachelor degree A black gown, hood and trencher. The hood is black, half lined with the colours of both disciplines, and is worn with the colours showing on the left‑hand side.

Bachelor degree A black gown, hood and trencher. The hood is black, half lined with the discipline colour, and is worn with the colour showing on the left‑hand side.

Associate degree A black gown, stole and trencher. The stole is black, lined with the discipline colour, and is worn with the colour showing on the right‑hand side.

Advanced diploma, associate diploma and diploma A black gown and stole. The stole is black, lined with the discipline colour, the right‑hand edge being trimmed with white cloth, and is worn with the colour and white trim showing on the right‑hand side.

Advanced certificate, certificate IV, certificate III and apprenticeship A black gown is worn.

Indigenous stoles A stole in the colours of the Aboriginal Australian flag can be worn by indigenous graduates and staff at graduation ceremonies. The stole is worn under any academic colours, or where there are no academic colours (i.e. certificate and apprenticeship recipients) the stole is worn under the gown.


Ceremonial regaliaChancellor A black gown of English Queen’s Counsel style, with ten gold bands on the sleeves and scarlet satin trimmings on the front, collar and bottom edge of the gown. A black velvet trencher with gold trim on the base and a gold braid and tassel is worn.

Deputy Chancellor A black gown, similar in style and colour to the Chancellor’s, with five gold bands on the sleeves. A black velvet trencher with a gold cord and tassel is worn.

Vice-Chancellor A black gown of English Queen’s Counsel style, with ten silver bands on the sleeves and scarlet satin trimmings on the front, collar and bottom edge of the gown. A black velvet trencher with silver trim on the base and a silver cord and tassel is worn.

Deputy Vice-ChancellorsBased on the design of the Vice‑Chancellor’s regalia, a Deputy Vice‑Chancellor’s regalia is of similar style and colour, but with five silver bands on the sleeve. The mortar board of a Deputy Vice‑Chancellor has no braid on the bottom.

Members of CouncilCouncil members wear a university stole featuring the Swinburne Coat of Arms with the academic dress for their qualifications. The stole is cherry red with an embroidered crest at the base of each side of the stole, and is worn with the colour and crest showing on both sides.

• Guests are asked to remain in their seats for the entire ceremony. When the academic procession enters the venue, guests and graduates are asked to stand and remain standing until after the singing of the National Anthem.

• Our graduation custom is that each graduate is applauded as their name is announced. We encourage all guests and graduates to join us in following this tradition.

• Please note that the ceremony will be photographed and videotaped.

• Please ensure all mobile phones are turned off during the ceremony.

• In the event an emergency evacuation is announced, please follow instructions and exit the venue promptly under the directions provided.

Jarrod Andrew GottThesis title: Creativity and dreams: an investigation into the genesis of images, and altered conscious states

Dreams, imagination and hallucination constitute examples of conscious states where the veridical contents of the retina are overridden by ‘synthetic’ content of internal generation. How the brain is able to do this is not comprehensively understood, with phenomenal investigation still comprising the most practical way to apprehend such states for scientific researchers and clinicians both. The development of empirical models will therefore necessitate interdisciplinary methods, to generate hypothesis and contextualise research findings. The thesis comprises an interdisciplinary attempt to understand internally generated content, and establish construct validity between neurophysiological and neuro‑philosophical accounts of mental imagery and its genesis.

Doctor of Philosophy

Karen Leanne ConradThesis title: Public relations education in Australia – perspectives from educators in the Higher Education (HE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) sectors

Dr Conrad’s thesis, the first comprehensive national review of public relations education in Australia, is based on interviews with 51 public relations educators and records their insights and perspectives. It reveals that university public relations courses are usurping the traditional and philosophical role of VET by mostly providing industry‑focused vocational training designed to prepare graduates for work in the public relations industry. Its findings report a blurring of the sectors and include that if public relations degrees do nothing more than take over the vocational training role then the status of public relations as an academic discipline is unlikely to improve.

David Geoffrey DawsonThesis title: Attitudes and decision making in digital education

Schools face monumental challenges when implementing digital technologies and training stakeholders in using digital technologies and in acquiring digital literacy. In Dr Dawson’s mixed‑methods research, surveys were conducted, and data analysis indicated significant differences in attitudes and disconnects between educators and students. These disconnects were related to training and decision-making that impacted on effective use of digital technologies. In‑depth follow‑up interviews were conducted with educators skilled in digital technologies. Decision-making was confirmed as a factor limiting uses of digital technologies, undermining implementations, curriculum applications and effective training. Poor school management practices were uncovered, and recommendations made for managing digital technology systems.

Zsuzsanna HorvathThesis title: Evaluation of the Mobile Forensic Mental Health Service

Although mental illness is considerably more prevalent in prisoner populations as compared with general community samples, few mental health services are available in prisons. The Mobile Forensic Mental Health Service is a novel service providing psychiatric and psychological assessment, intervention, and clinical management to prisoners as they transition through the various custodial environments within Victoria, Australia. There is a strong focus on clients experiencing depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Dr Horvarth’s thesis comprises two studies, an evaluation of the group treatment program, and a data linkage study that further explores the efficacy of group and individual psychological treatments.

Shae HunterThesis title: Media-engaged home renovation and the transition to zero carbon homes: understanding change in everyday practices at home

Dr Hunter’s thesis explores how media engagement shapes home renovation and the transition to zero carbon housing. Drawing on qualitative data from 17 households across Victoria, Australia, it demonstrates how the house is reimagined via meanings and competencies of comfort, cleanliness and control, shaping future practices and the spatial and material configurations that support them. The critical role of imagination in media engagement and crises in routine as a precursor to change are emphasised. Findings reveal opportunities for media content to engage with future imagined practices and for environmental sustainability to be reimagined as a shaping principle in home renovation.



James Daniel KeanThesis title: Investigations into two novel nutraceutical nootropic interventions, PCSO-524® and CDRI 08®, on the behaviour, cognition, mood, and neurophysiology of children and adolescents with clinical and subclinical levels of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has a prevalence rate of 3.4% worldwide, with subclinical levels of associated symptoms estimated to be upwards of 23%. Dr Kean’s thesis explored the effects of two novel alternative interventions on the behaviour, cognition, mood, and neurophysiology of children and adolescents exhibiting clinical and subclinical levels of ADHD. Improvements were reported in cognitive outcomes, neurophysiology, and parent‑reported behaviour. This work provides an original insight into the field of subclinical ADHD symptoms, and the safe and efficacious use of alternative treatments in a vulnerable population.

Peter KyriakoulisThesis title: The efficacy of cold facial immersion and the diving response in panic disorder

The diving response is an innate human adaptation which, when elicited through cold facial immersion and apnea, produces a reduced heart rate. Panic disorder is a common anxiety disorder characterised by spontaneous and recurrent panic attacks. Hence Dr Kyriakoulis’ research aimed to investigate the application of the diving response and cold facial immersion in reducing panic and anxiety symptoms in individuals who suffer from panic disorder. This novel research investigation demonstrated that the diving response can reduce physiological and cognitive symptoms of anxiety/panic and that it is an easy to use and practical application that individuals that suffer from panic disorder can benefit from.

Tessa Jayne MaguireThesis title: Enhancing risk assessment and nursing interventions to prevent aggression and reduce the use of restrictive interventions in forensic mental health units

The ultimate aim of Dr Maguire’s thesis was to test whether structuring nursing interventions and linking them to the Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression (DASA) would lead to a reduction in aggression and restrictive interventions in a forensic mental health unit for female patients. Initial studies showed that the DASA has modest predictive validity for both males and females, although these is a need to revise the risk bands, and that some nursing interventions may aggravate patients, leading to an increase rather than decrease in aggression. These results were used to develop an Aggression Prevention Protocol, which was embedded in an electronic application of the DASA. The introduction of this APP resulted in a lessening of restrictive interventions, administration of PRN medication, and verbal aggression, with an increase in documented nursing interventions.

Angeline MayasariThesis title: Using pictorial language to mediate emotions and support meaningful relationships between grandparents and adolescent grandchildren separated by distance

Dr Mayasari’s thesis explores the use of designed communication tools and mobile communication technology to add value to communication and to promote meaningful relationships between grandparents and grandchildren during the challenging stage of adolescence. There are three studies, each offering insights into common emotions and experiences that grandparents and adolescent grandchildren encounter in maintaining connectedness using communication tools. The thesis also provides characteristics of successful communication and conditions in allowing the key characteristics of successful communication to be fulfilled using mobile communication technology. Considering these characteristics and conditions when designing communication tools can contribute positively to the maintenance of meaningful relationship.

Joanna Adobea NkyekyerThesis title: Investigating the impact of hearing aid use and auditory training on cognition, mood, and social interaction in older adults with hearing loss

The number of people worldwide with hearing impairment exceeds 600 million. This number is expected to rise with the aging population. The aim of Dr Nkyekyer’s thesis is to learn how auditory training and hearing aid use, together with brain training for improved listening and speech perception, impacts on a person’s cognition and psychosocial function. Results suggest that several cognitive domains are associated with speech perception and hearing loss at baseline. The hearing intervention provides evidence of reduced depressive symptoms. This important work has the potential to help millions of people worldwide not only with improved hearing but may play a part in delaying or slowing the progression of dementia.



Kaelasha Cameron David TylerThesis title: Heideggerian phenomenology and the electrophysiological correlates of consciousness

Heideggerian phenomenology is used to inform a theoretical position regarding consciousness and its relationship to domains traditionally considered to be outside of consciousness, such as ‘the world’ or ‘matter’. This theoretical position is tested through four studies investigating the relationship between the neurobiological representations of conscious and non‑conscious processes in the brain. It is suggested that such research contributes to a richer philosophical basis for the neurosciences and provides a novel avenue to explore the ways in which the brain is involved in the process of conscious perception.

Richard William WhiteheadThesis title: Nonattachment and nonattachment to self: the role of letting go in optimal psychological health

Dr Whitehead’s thesis provides a comprehensive investigation of the benefits of the Buddhist construct ‘nonattachment’, defined as the absence of fixation on experience needing to be any way in particular. The results showed that being more non‑attached is related to greater psychological and subjective well‑being, and increased wisdom, self‑actualisation and self‑transcendence. Further, the thesis provided the first qualitative investigation of high and low levels of nonattachment, and created a new measure of ‘non‑attachment to self ’. The findings provide detailed insight into how Buddhist concepts such as nonattachment can play in important role in Western conceptualisations of mental health.

Biruktayt ShiferawThesis title: The utility of gaze entropy measures in estimating visual scanning efficiency to detect driver impairment

Driver monitoring technologies are increasingly becoming available in new vehicles and as standalone devices. Yet, their utility is limited to specific symptoms of impairing conditions such as drowsiness and looking away from the road. Dr Shiferaw’s thesis investigated how gaze data from driver monitoring technologies can be used to infer internal cognitive impairment. The results presented herein indicate that such technology may be used to detect impairment in real‑time and alert drivers, which may help reduce traffic accidents.

Ming Adin TanThesis title: Development and validation of smart insoles for gait monitoring of diabetic patients

Dr Tan’s thesis aims to develop low‑cost, high‑resolution pressure sensing insoles for gait monitoring. Properties of flexible piezoelectric pressure sensors were investigated in detail and several iterations of screen‑printed insoles were produced. A new material property, electrical viscosity, was discovered and an industrial standard proposed. A novel validation method was developed to ensure the accuracy of the insoles. The insoles were used for a healthy volunteer study, which involved 20 participants and a clinical trial comprising of 14 diabetic patients. Novel gait indices, which measured gait symmetry, laterality and consistency, were developed from the experimental data.

Carolyn Hong ThaiThesis title: Electrophysiological measures of aesthetic processing

Neuroaesthetics is an area of research that investigates the underpinnings of aesthetic processing. Dr Thai’s thesis aimed to explore processing of art and design stimuli and whether there are any commonalities for positive and negative aesthetic responses between the two types of stimuli using electroencephalography. Research into neuroaesthetics is bridging the gap in the literature of aesthetic research with regard to ordinary objects. The thesis reports on two experiments that investigated two experiments which investigated two parallel lines of inquiry: the neural correlates of aesthetic responses, and the role of Typicality and Novelty in aesthetic preference of common objects.


Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology)

Alison Therese FogartyThesis title: Resilience in children exposed to intimate partner violence: a maternal perspective

Intimate partner violence is associated with significant disruptions to children’s emotional behavioural development. Dr Fogarty’s thesis utilises a mixed methods design to explore resilience in children exposed to intimate partner violence. Drawing on a secondary data analysis of a large, longitudinal study of first time mothers and qualitative interview with mothers, results highlighted the important protective role which mothers often play. Specifically, mothers’ physical and mental health were identified as key protective factors for children exposed to intimate partner violence, underscoring the importance of accessible psychological and physical health services for women and children following experiences of intimate partner violence.

Christopher Roy JillardThesis title: Understanding the reasons negative evaluation is feared by individuals with social anxiety

Individuals with higher levels of social anxiety, compared to those with lower social anxiety, exhibit greater fear of negative evaluation by others. However, the reasons underlying this fear of negative evaluation, and mechanisms of change underlying its response to treatment, are unclear. Dr Jillard’s thesis established that the experience of shame in response to negative evaluation was a key mechanism contributing to heightened fear of negative evaluation and its response to treatment. The clarification of this mechanism makes a valuable contribution to understanding of how cognitive behaviour therapy can be modified with new treatment targets.

Stephanie Jacqueline MathewsThesis title: ‘Now I know how to cope with it’: the trajectory of the self over time in depression and anxiety

Dr Mathews’ research examined how individuals with a depressive and/or anxiety disorder perceive the self over time. Anxiety was associated with helpful comparisons between past, present and future selves. People perceived an upward trajectory of their ability to cope with their symptoms. In contrast, depression onset appeared to disrupt the upward trajectory. People tended to make unhelpful comparisons between the present symptomatic self and the self prior to symptom onset. However, improvement was perceived when comparing the past symptomatic self and current self. The results highlight the importance for treatment to reinforce the upward coping trajectory and target unhelpful temporal comparisons.

Elizabeth Suzanne DaffThesis title: Youth intimate partner abuse: relationship conflict among Australian youth

Youth intimate partner abuse is a pervasive issue impacting many adolescents. Dr Daff’s thesis provides contemporary figures on the experiences of abusive behaviours in adolescent relationships. It also explores the influence of individual risk markers on perpetration of relationship aggression, and whether these operate in a manner suggested by theory. Findings showed that adolescents were most likely experiencing a combination of abuse victimisation and perpetration in their relationships. Several cognitive constructs influenced this perpetration, however developmentally relevant correlates did not prevent perpetration in an anticipated manner. These results help to inform intervention to reduce perpetration of relationship violence among youth.

Mr Gupta’s research investigates the factors that motivate customers to participate in creation of brand user generated content in social networking websites. The content generated by customers of different brands are considered as more trustworthy than those generated by the organisations. The theoretical framework of this research is based on the self‑determination theory which focuses on the intrinsic underlying motivations (autonomy, relatedness and competency) and the service dominant logic, which focuses on the customers’ resources (brand knowledge and social network strengths). The findings will assist brand managers in designing strategies to encourage customers’ participation in brand user generated content on social networking websites.

The value of philanthropic foundations contribution to society has been discussed for 20 years. One important aspect of foundations value is their ability to catalyse and support social innovation. Foundations are often immune from the external pressures that cause businesses or even government to innovate. Innovation includes inputs, processes, outputs and outcomes. Innovation occurs internally through innovative practice, processes and investment in innovation capability and externally through the support of innovative grant making, initiatives and investing. Natasha ChassagneThesis title: Buen Vivir as an alternative to sustainable development: the case of Cotacachi, Ecuador

Buen Vivir (Good Life) is a Latin American worldview that values the wellbeing of the environment as equally as human wellbeing. Dr Chassagne’s research explored whether Buen Vivir could become a practical alternative to the current human‑centred model of sustainable development. It looked at the Cotacachi county in Ecuador as a case study because of its geographical, social and environmental situation and the people’s pursuit of Buen Vivir. The study examined its principles and what it looks like in practice, and found that it could be a viable tool for community‑led social and environmental wellbeing, in any context.

Joelle HawaThesis title: Financing medtech innovation in Melbourne: a case study in economic and phenomenological sociology

Dr Hawa’s thesis examines how Australian medtech entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and government officials make sense of their environment and engage in the development of the medtech financing space and the medtech innovation system of Melbourne. The findings from this qualitative study suggests that the multiple meanings emergent from the three sets of actors create a cycle of disconnect, leading to struggles and incremental development of the medtech innovation financing field and the medtech innovation system of Melbourne. The study highlights the tensions existent in the medtech innovation field providing evidence based implications for policymakers working in the medtech innovation field.

Jialing LinThesis title: Antecedents of customer value perception of green brands and their influence on green brand attachment and loyalty: a study in mainland China

Dr Lin’s study examines the effectiveness of green branding through the customer value approach in the context of a developing country. It offers critical theoretical contributions for the green marketing initiatives as well as important managerial implications for organisations intending to implement green marketing and corporate social responsibility strategies. The findings of this study suggest that a well-implemented green branding strategy can lead to more effective green communication, higher customer value and more attached and loyal customer‑brand relationships.



Zakir MorshedThesis title: Regulation and performance of the microfinance industry

A major change to the regulatory regime in the microfinance industry in Bangladesh occurred when the Microcredit Regulatory Authority Act was enacted in 2006. Under the Act, microfinance institutions had to register with the Authority. Using as its theoretical underpinning responsive regulation and stakeholder theories, this study investigates differential governance and performance outcomes at both organisational and client level for institutions that did and did not register. Dr Morshed’s findings reveal that registered institutions perform comparatively better in terms of governance practices, outreach and financial sustainability and that their clients’ financial literacy and financial status is better than for unregistered institutions.

Andrew Dougall RobertsThesis title: Copengauging: toward a grounded theory of middle-managerial coping

Despite the move towards flatter organisations, middle managers continue to play a pivotal role. Dr Roberts’ thesis offers insights on how middle managers cope with shift in realities and unrelenting pressures. In‑depth interviews revealed that middle managers undertake an iterative and dynamic psycho‑social process through which they reflexively gauge their environment and then cope by varying their levels of engagement. Thus the thesis, somewhat counter‑intuitively, puts forth ‘disengagement’ as a legitimate coping mechanism. The findings inform organisations on how they might lower the stress levels and enhance the mental health and well‑being of their employees in general and middle managers in particular.

Thi Dan Tra VuThesis title: Corporate social responsibility practices of multinational subsidiaries in Vietnam: The role of corporate social performance and organisational practice transfer

Drawing on an integrated theoretical approach encompassing corporate social performance, organisational practice transfer, institutional theory and resource‑based views, Dr Vu’s research explores how multinational subsidiaries adapt their corporate social responsibility practices in Vietnam. The research may benefit multinational subsidiary communities in Vietnam and other developing countries, which still struggle to gain legitimacy and competitiveness in their host countries. The research also responds to the gap in literature on corporate social responsibility, corporate social performance and organisational practice transfer and the lack of multi‑theory and multi‑level analysis of corporate social responsibility of multinational companies in developing countries.

Chieh Ren QuekThesis title: Epitope mapping of the Non-Structural Protein 2 (NSP2) of Rotavirus

Rotavirus infection causes diarrhoea among young children worldwide. To date, a number of previous studies have revealed animal and human antibody reactions targeted towards the non‑structural proteins, including NSP2. This study was designed to map the epitope region of NSP2 reacting to an NSP2-specific monoclonal antibody. Western blot results together with further dot blot, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics analyses revealed two putative epitope sequences on NSP2: QYNKFAVITHGKGHYRIVK and YRIVKYSSVANHADRVYAT. Knowledge on the epitopes of NSP2 protein can be applied in further immunological studies of NSP2 and may be important in the future design of next generation rotavirus vaccines.

Geek Ching TanThesis title: Expression of the Non-Structural Protein 4 (NSP4) of rotavirus in Escherichia coli based expression systems

The non‑structural protein NSP4 is an enterotoxin of the rotavirus acting against the intestinal lining of the infected hosts. In this study, the expression of full‑length NSP4 proteins was attempted in two E. coli‑based systems. Construction of appropriate recombinant plasmids was successful. However, after inducing the expression of NSP4 in E. coli host cells, the optical densities of the bacterial cultures declined, indicating that the expressed NSP4 proteins were toxic to the bacterial cells. The declining bacterial cell numbers also accounted for very low expression levels of NSP4 proteins and made the purification of the expressed proteins difficult.


Caitlin Isabel AdamsThesis title: Linking large-scale structure and peculiar velocities in the low-redshift

To understand the universe as a whole, it is important to understand how gravity behaves between galaxies. This behaviour is closely related to the rate at which galaxies and galaxy clusters grow. Dr Adams’ thesis develops a new way to measure this growth rate from the positions and motions of galaxies. We modelled the correlation between the density of galaxies and the movement of galaxies at many different points in the local universe. This relationship revealed new information about the behaviour of gravity, leading to a better measurement of the growth rate of galaxies and galaxy clusters.

Matthew Terence AgnewThesis title: A dynamical search for habitable worlds and solar system analogues

The search for habitable worlds around other stars is an area of immense interest to the exoplanetary science community. However, with the intractably large sample of known exoplanet systems, how do we decide which are the most promising locations to look to find Earth-like planets? Dr Agnew’s thesis explores this question by numerically simulating the most scientifically interesting subset of exoplanetary systems, and determining whether as yet undetected planets of astrobiological interest could reside within them. This work also takes the important step of determining which of these planets would also be detectable with the next generation of observational instruments.

Md Yeasin AhmedThesis title: The influence of roadside vegetation on pavement roughness affected by alluvial expansive soil deposits in Victoria, Australia

Dr Ahmed’s research has investigated the influence of roadside vegetation on pavement roughness progression rates. For this purpose, a rural highway located in North West region of Victoria was selected as a potential site that contained moderate to highly expansive sub‑grades and semi‑arid climate conditions. Roughness data was retrieved from VicRoads and roadside vegetation data was collected using satellite and street view imageries. The roughness data (both in IRI and waveband roughness indices) were analysed against roadside vegetation data to understand the inherent relationship between these variables. Roughness progression rate models were developed for all waveband indices to better understand the tree contribution at various roughness wavelengths. Furthermore, a safe tree plantation design guideline has been proposed which can reduce the risk of deterioration relevant to the presence of trees in road reserve. Finally, a tree proximity ratio and design charts have been developed which can used as a design standard for roadside tree plantation strategies, and help in asset management and cost reduction in maintenance and rehabilitation strategies.



Nuha Yahya Abdulmohsin Al-AttabiThesis title: Effect of conductive fillers on the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of polyurethane composites

Conducting polymers have attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications in biosensors, drug delivery systems, biomedical implants and tissue engineering. In biomedical applications, conventional conductive polymers, such as polypyrole and polyaniline, have limitations due to poor solubility (polyaniline) and biocompatibility (polypyrrole) as well as processability. The aim of this study is to develop a new family of conductive polymer composites through the addition of conductive fillers into the bulk polyurethane (PU, Elast‑Eon™). These PUs are a thermoplas tic elastomers which behave as electrical insulators, they have been studied extensively for biomedical applications because of their good biocompatibility, biostability, excellent processability and good mechanical properties.

Steve Michael BeguinThesis title: Multi-electrode array for high resolution impedance-based analysis of adherent cell cultures

Dr Beguin’s research project was directed towards the development of a microscale multi electrode array device as a tool that probes electrical properties (i.e. the impedance spectrum) of adherent single cells to identify their biological characteristics. The existing models of the cell impedance were refined to obtain a parametric model of the single cell adherent on a microelectrode. The simulations allowed to find corresponding biological markers from the impedance spectrum acquired by culturing mouse cells and human stem cells in the device. Direct applications range from fundamental research in cell biology, to applied medical diagnostics, to cell farms for cell therapies.

Lu ChenThesis title: Efficient cohesive subgraph search in big attributed graph data

Models for finding cohesive subgraph previously have focused on graphs having no attributes. However, these graphs provide only partial representation of real graph data and miss important attributes describing a variety of features for each vertex in the graphs. As such real graph data are better modelled as attributed graph. Investigations for cohesive subgraph search in attributed graphs are still at preliminary stage. Searching cohesive subgraphs in an attributed graph can discover communities and find useful information for keyword queries. In Dr Chen’s thesis, several cohesive subgraph models considering spatial and textual attributes are studied, which fit into various real applications.

Mohammad Jabed Morshed ChowdhuryThesis title: Subject-driven data sharing: a framework for sharing access to personal data across organisational boundaries

Nowadays, data sharing has become part of life. Sharing data involves context, privacy, and re‑sharing. Capturing these requirements and enforcing them is a challenging job. In addition, individuals are usually restricted by the administrative domain while sharing their data and individuals do not get a global view of their shared resources. In Dr Chowdhury’s research, a framework was developed to enable individuals to share their data from a common place irrespective of the organization, which is actually hosting the data. Finally, research was conducted in blockchain technology to provide data provenance in data sharing.

Pavel KolesnichenkoThesis title: Optical spectroscopy and hyloscopy of monolayers of tungsten disulphide

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides have been studied extensively during the last decade as they provide platforms for realization of valley‑selective and spin‑polarized optoelectronics. However, the existing fabrication techniques are far from meeting industrial needs and commonly result in randomly distributed monolayer islands with heterogeneous optoelectronic properties. Here, to study optoelectronic properties of these materials, optical imaging and time‑resolved Raman techniques were developed. Deeper insights into the optical heterogeneities and crystal growth pathways were obtained using multi‑dimensional analysis of spatially‑resolved excitonic spectra, and dendritic domains of elevated n‑doping levels were recognized. Dr Kolesnichenko ‘s research helps to resolve some conjectures regarding the nature of commonly observed spatial heterogeneities and offers an advanced method for examination of monolayer matter (hyloscopy). The latter, in turn, promises to advance the research around 2D materials and facilitate understanding of their properties and relevant fabrication techniques.

Pengpeng LiThesis title: Influences of risk tolerance, perception and safety climate on unsafe behaviours in construction: workers and managers

Despite improvements made in construction safety over the last few decades, injuries and fatalities still occur on a regular basis. So, how to prevent unsafe behaviours on site for both workers and managers is an important issue. Dr Li’s research tries to understand how construction practitioners process safety risk information from the perspective of how people perceive and tolerate safety risks under certain safety climate. Based on these behaviour analyses, it provides valuable practical insights for better and more effective construction safety management.


Qiming LiuThesis title: Two-scale topology optimization of dynamic structures and material microstructures

Dr Liu’s thesis investigated two‑scale topology optimization of dynamic structures and their material microstructures on performances including natural frequency, damping and dynamic compliance. Comparing to the one‑scale topology optimization, two‑scale topology optimization provides more design freedom and can essentially invent high‑performance structures. Nevertheless, the research on the two‑scale topology optimization is still limited especially on the design of dynamic structures, which are of significance for practical applications. The modern version of the bi‑directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method has been proved to have the ability to generate convergent and reliable optimized solutions for various design problems. Three numerical algorithms of two‑scale topology optimization based on BESO are provided on natural frequency, damping and dynamic compliance. This proposed two‑scale topology optimization technique provides a solid foundation for designing practical dynamic structures.

Jonathon Luke MiegelThesis title: Methods for improving the ease of use of hearing aids

Dr Miegel’s thesis explores two main avenues for improving the user experience of hearing aids. To address user concerns regarding ease of use and manipulability, a modular interface was designed and prototyped to facilitate a modular hearing aid. The design, development, and testing of an acoustic wireless communication system between a smartphone and a hearing aid is also presented. By leveraging the existing hardware and firmware on the hearing aid an always‑on low power wireless receiver can be implemented to address user concerns regarding both battery life and ease of use.

Ahmed Mohamed Abdelhamid OsmanThesis title: Bacterial attachment and microbiologically influenced corrosion in dynamic/flow systems

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) refers to changes in corrosion caused by the presence of microorganisms, typically as a result of their metabolic activities. While MIC causes major problems of rapid corrosion in a range of industries, the fundamental mechanisms involved are poorly understood. Many of the areas in which MIC is a problem occur in systems with moving fluids, such as piping systems. Despite this, most of the research on MIC is typically performed in static conditions. The overall aim of Dr Osman’s research is to better understand the effects of fluid flow on MIC.

Kirubajiny PasupathyThesis title: Field and laboratory investigation of the durability performance of geopolymer concrete

Dr Pasupathy’s thesis investigated the long term durability performance of geopolymer concrete exposed to atmospheric and aggressive environments. Despite many decades of research, the use of geopolymer concrete in construction industry is very limited due to insufficient knowledge on long term durability. In this study, two major factors influencing the durability of concrete, known as carbonation and chloride diffusion, were studied for different geopolymer concrete types. It was found that the use of slag in geopolymer concrete enhances the durability, compared to fly ash based geopolymer in field environment. Nevertheless, the durability of all studied geopolymer types were still lower than Portland cement concrete. Recommendations were provided to develop suitable geopolymer chemistry and mix design to enhance the durability of geopolymer concrete for industrial applications.

Epma Lupita Ismudya PutriThesis title: Gas transport mechanism for bubble nucleation in aluminium electrolysis

Understanding bubble nucleation behaviour is essential for energy saving possibilities in the aluminium smelting process. However, there are still matters of debate regarding the bubble nucleation behaviour. The main reason for this is the CO/CO2 gas transport mechanism on the underside of anode and its correlation between gas diffusion, anode and bath properties is not yet fully understood. Hence Dr Putri’s research will use experimental techniques to measure the diffusion coefficient of CO2 in porous anode and molten salt, in conjunction with the measurement of properties of anodes materials. Theoretical values for these diffusion coefficients will be calculated for comparison.



Mohammad Al Hossaini ShuvaThesis title: Analysis of thermodynamic behaviour of valuable elements and slag structure during e-waste processing through copper smelting

Waste of electronics and electrical equipment and other end‑of‑life high technology products can be viewed as resources for metals, as they do not only contain the common metals but also trace valuable and rare elements. Elements have different thermodynamic properties that govern the partitioning behaviour during the process. Dr Shuva’s study investigated the thermodynamic behaviour of germanium, palladium and tantalum metals and determine their distribution‑ratio in slag‑metal equilibrium reaction during black copper processing. Moreover, it also examined the ferrous‑calcium‑silicate slag structure using vibrational spectroscopy and correlation between the degree of polymerization and distribution‑ratio was developed using multiple regression analysis.

Ming XiaThesis title: Investigation of cementitious materials for powder-based 3D printing

3D concrete printing is an emerging technology that is set to revolutionize the construction industry by allowing ‘free‑form’ construction without the use of expensive formwork. Powder‑based 3D concrete printing is one of such techniques, which is capable of producing building components with significantly high resolution. One of the main challenges of this technique is the very limited scope of printable cementitious materials that can be used for construction applications. Dr Xia’s research aims to overcome the issues and barriers by developing a systemic methodology to adapt conventional construction materials to the powder‑based 3D concrete printing technique.

Lingkai XingThesis title: Artificial neural network-based foreign exchange market modeling and analysis

Foreign exchange market is one of the most influential and complex financial markets. Due to the complexity of foreign exchange market, the modeling and prediction of FX market is an extremely complex challenge faced by scientists and economists today. In this research, Dr Xing explores the use of artificial neural networks for modeling and analysing the market with financial big data. Investigations and researches are mainly focusing on developments of structures and training algorithms of neural network models to provide consistent and reliable foreign exchange market predictions for financial planning, decision‑making, investment and risk management for financial institutes and governments.

Jianjun ZhangThesis title: Plastic deformation and energy absorption of lightweight cellular materials

Dr Zhang’s thesis is to investigate the energy absorption and plastic deformation of the three novel lightweight cellular materials: auxetic materials, origami materials and graded materials. The mechanisms of plastic deformation and the effect of cell geometries and loading conditions on their energy absorption and protective performance are to be explored. Three research methods are to be employed: experiments, finite element simulation and analytical modelling. The research findings are expected to pave the way for engineering applications of lightweight cellular materials as energy absorbers and protective equipment.
