The Australian campus of
Carnegie Mellon University
was established in Adelaide in
2006 as the first international
university in Australia. To date,
nearly 800 international and local
students have undertaken Masters
degrees in information technology,
information systems management
and public policy and management
from Carnegie Mellon University in
Australia.
The University was founded in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1900
by philanthropist and industrialist
Andrew Carnegie, who was driven
by a desire to educate young
people and prepare them to have
an impact on their communities and
professions by applying science
and technology to solve practical
problems.
This ceremony celebrates the
culmination of Andrew Carnegie’s
vision and passion, combined with
the dedication, commitment and
drive of each of our graduating
students.
Order of Proceedings
President Donald J. Trump nominated
Ambassador Arthur B. (A.B.) Culvahouse
Jr. to be the United States Ambassador to
Australia on November 6, 2018. Confirmed
by the U.S. Senate on January 2, 2019 by
unanimous consent, he was formally sworn
in by Vice President Mike Pence on February
19, 2019. Ambassador Culvahouse presented
his credentials to Governor-General Sir Peter
Cosgrove on March 13, 2019.
Ambassador Culvahouse serves as the
President’s personal representative to the
government and people of Australia. He
leads the U.S. Mission to Australia, which is
comprised of the embassy in Canberra and
three consulates in Melbourne, Sydney, and
Perth.
Ambassador Culvahouse has a long and
distinguished career. He is the former Chair
of O’Melveny & Myers, an international law
firm he was associated with for more than
four decades. He began his career as Chief
Legislative Assistant to United States Senator
Howard H. Baker, Jr. and later served as White
House Counsel to President Ronald Reagan.
In 1989, President Reagan awarded
Ambassador Culvahouse the Presidential
Citizens’ Medal, an award to “recognize
citizens who performed exemplary deeds of
service for the country or their fellow citizens.”
In December 1992, then-Secretary of
Defense Dick Cheney awarded Ambassador
Culvahouse the Defense Medal for
Distinguished Public Service for his work on
the Federal Advisory Committee on Nuclear
Failsafe and Risk Reduction.
Both President Trump and the late-Senator
John McCain tapped Ambassador Culvahouse
to head the search to select their running
mates.
Ambassador Culvahouse was raised in Ten
Mile, Tennessee and attended the University
of Tennessee and the New York University
School of Law. He is the proud father of three
accomplished daughters.
On behalf of colleagues in the faculty and
staff of CMU, I would like extend my sincere
congratulations to each of you. I would also
like to thank your family members and friends
who have helped you reach this momentous
occasion.
You are entering a world in which technology
is impacting economies and polities in far-
reaching ways at rates faster than previous
times in history. This global transformation is
placing enormous challenges and pressures on
communities, enterprises and governments.
The speed and substance of changes demand
evidence-based decision-making and smarter
policies and programs to ensure humanity’s
equitable and sustainable progress. The time
we live in clearly calls for leaders who have
knowledge and skills in the intersection of
people, policy and technology.
Such are the leaders that Heinz College seeks
to educate and propagate. I am confident that
each of you, having completed the rigors of
a CMU education, possess the potential to
become such leaders – or what Bill Cooper, the
founding Dean of Heinz College, envisioned as
“men and women for intelligent action”.
I hope and trust you will embody and
articulate this vision of leadership.
Best wishes.
Congratulations! You have earned the coveted
Carnegie Mellon degree. The degree is a
testament of competencies and skills at the
cutting-edge. You have been rigorously trained
so do lead and contribute to your chosen field
of endeavour.
As the 4th Industrial Revolution is underway,
you will encounter numerous opportunities
and challenges for personal and career
advancement. Many of these opportunities
and risks will be unprecedented. For never in
human history have there been breakthroughs
in science and technology as we are seeing at
present.
People are accumulating knowledge,
developing technologies, and applying
innovations that are rapidly changing
economies and societies around the world.
Individuals and organisations now have
more access to information, networks and
computing power that can amplify and
leverage their impact.
You will need to continuously learn and
connect with others in this brave new world. It
is my hope that your education has come with
wisdom and that your decisions will be driven
by good judgment.
May each of you become specialists with spirit
and knowledge workers with heart, so that in
combination you will contribute to an inclusive
and sustainable world.
Best wishes.

Internship leads to job offer
Xiang (James) Tan was only half way through
his internship in his last semester at CMU-A
when he received a lucrative job from his
internship host in Adelaide!!
James, a graduate from Jilin University in
China, came to CMU-A in 2017 to undertake
the 21-month Master of Science in Information
Technology degree.
“My passion is being able to use historical
data to predict outcomes and drive decision-
making, but I knew that I needed to go to grad
school to build my technology knowledge and
skills”, said James.
“I chose CMU because it’s the #1 university in
the world for analytics education.
“The internship part of my degree was
excellent. The experience has helped me hone
my technical skills, learn new skills and really
grow as a person, said James.
“I was always confident with technology, but
thanks to my internship I’ve been able to work
on my non-technical skills such as working in
a team, presenting ideas to management and
working with clients.
Butterflies the winners from CMU-A internships program
As part of her Master of Science in Information
Technology degree, Fan Feng undertook a
10 week internship at the South Australian
Museum with the Butterfly Conservation South
Australia (BCSA) team.
Her brief was to re-build and redesign the
long out-of-date website for BCSA, an
important project given it’s the principal
resource for scientists and is a repository of
over 1,500 images and 20 years of research
into butterflies by renowned Adelaide
Lepidopterist, Roger Grund.
During her internship Fan worked with
Jan Forrest and Michael Moore (Chairman
of Butterfly Conservation and a volunteer
taxonomist at the SA Museum) on the
website. She worked with over 270 html files
(pages) and 1569 images, maps and diagrams,
mostly life history images of South Australian
butterflies and their habitat.
“Fan has done a superb job for us. And I’m
delighted to say the results have far exceeded
our expectations”, said Jan.
Without Fan and the CMU-A internship
program BCSA simply wouldn’t have been
able to afford to do this project. Its truly
amazing and I can’t think about where we’d be
without Fan or CMU-A,” she said
