The ceremony will conclude with the
sound of the bagpipes. Please stand as
the faculty and graduates depart the
Auditorium.
The Australian campus of
Carnegie Mellon University
was established in Adelaide in
2006 as the first international
university in Australia. To date,
nearly 800 international and local
students have undertaken Masters
degrees in information technology,
information systems management
and public policy and management
from Carnegie Mellon University in
Australia.
The University was founded in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1900
by philanthropist and industrialist
Andrew Carnegie, who was driven
by a desire to educate young
people and prepare them to have
an impact on their communities and
professions by applying science
and technology to solve practical
problems.
This ceremony celebrates the
culmination of Andrew Carnegie’s
vision and passion, combined with
the dedication, commitment and
drive of each of our graduating
students.
Order of Proceedings
David Radzanowski is Senior Vice President
of the Equator Corporation currently fulfilling
the role of Strategic Business Director for
Australia’s Future Submarine Program, the
largest Defence procurement program in
Australia’s history. In this role he provides
overall leadership for the financial, human
resources, information management, security,
export control, and administrative functions of
the program.
Radzanowski retired as the Chief Financial
Officer of the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration in January 2017 after nearly 28
years of federal service. He was confirmed as
Chief Financial Officer by the United States
Senate in September 2014 and appointed by
President Barack Obama. Before becoming
Chief Financial Officer in 2014, Radzanowski
served as Chief of Staff and principal advisor
to NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden, Jr., a
position he held beginning May 2010.
Prior to this appointment as Chief of Staff, he
was the Deputy Associate Administrator for
Program Integration for the Space Operations
Mission Directorate where he had oversight
responsibility for the administrative functions
of the Directorate as well as Space Shuttle
Transition and Retirement activities. In
February 2006, he joined NASA as Assistant
Associate Administrator for the Resources
Management and Analysis Office within Space
Operations.
Radzanowski’s NASA career included
supporting the Review of U.S. Human
Spaceflight Plans Committee, otherwise
known as the Augustine Committee, which
conducted a comprehensive review of NASA’s
human space flight plans. He provided
assistance and guidance primarily in the areas
of budget and program costing. He received a
Meritorious Presidential Rank Award in 2009,
NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2011,
and NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal in
2017, the highest agency honor bestowed on
civil servants.
Prior to NASA, Radzanowski served
eight years at the White House Office of
Management and Budget (OMB) as Deputy
Associate Director for Appropriations, Office
of Legislative Affairs; Chief, Science and Space
Programs Branch; and Program Examiner for
the National Science Foundation, Science and
Space Programs Branch.
Prior to joining OMB, Radzanowski served
eight years as an analyst in aerospace policy
for the Congressional Research Service on
Capitol Hill. In this position, he wrote over 30
reports on space issues and testified twice
before Congress on NASA issues.
Radzanowski earned his bachelor’s degree
in Astronomy-Physics from the University
of Wisconsin-Madison in 1988. Radzanowski
earned a master’s degree in Public Policy
and Management from Carnegie Mellon
University’s Heinz College in 1990. He is
married to Jennifer Kron of New Jersey and
resides in Canberra, ACT Australia.
On behalf of colleagues in the faculty and
staff of CMU, I would like extend my sincere
congratulations to each of you. I would also
like to thank your family members and friends
who have helped you reach this momentous
occasion.
You are entering a world in which technology
is impacting economies and polities in far-
reaching ways at rates faster than previous
times in history. This global transformation is
placing enormous challenges and pressures on
communities, enterprises and governments.
The speed and substance of changes demand
evidence-based decision-making and smarter
policies and programs to ensure humanity’s
equitable and sustainable progress. The time
we live in clearly calls for leaders who have
knowledge and skills in the intersection of
people, policy and technology.
Such are the leaders that Heinz College seeks
to educate and propagate. I am confident that
each of you, having completed the rigors of
a CMU education, possess the potential to
become such leaders – or what Bill Cooper, the
founding Dean of Heinz College, envisioned as
“men and women for intelligent action”.
I hope and trust you will embody and
articulate this vision of leadership.
Best wishes.
Congratulations! You have earned the coveted
Carnegie Mellon degree. The degree is a
testament of competencies and skills at the
cutting-edge. You have been rigorously trained
so do lead and contribute to your chosen field
of endeavour.
As the 4th Industrial Revolution is underway,
you will encounter numerous opportunities
and challenges for personal and career
advancement. Many of these opportunities
and risks will be unprecedented. For never in
human history have there been breakthroughs
in science and technology as we are seeing at
present.
People are accumulating knowledge,
developing technologies, and applying
innovations that are rapidly changing
economies and societies around the world.
Individuals and organisations now have
more access to information, networks and
computing power that can amplify and
leverage their impact.
You will need to continuously learn and
connect with others in this brave new world. It
is my hope that your education has come with
wisdom and that your decisions will be driven
by good judgment.
May each of you become specialists with spirit
and knowledge workers with heart, so that in
combination you will contribute to an inclusive
and sustainable world.
Best wishes.
