The Kaneb Center supports the pursuit of teaching excellence by stimulating scholarly reflection and

New TA OrientationEvery fall during the week before classes begin, the Kaneb Center offers a two-day orientation to all graduate students who are serving as a TA or preparing to teach their own course.

Teaching CertificatesGraduate students and postdoctoral scholars are eligible to earn Kaneb Center teaching certificates. The requirements listed below may be fulfilled over multiple semesters. Additional information is available at kaneb.nd.edu/programs/.

—Striving for Excellence in TeachingAttend five eligible teaching workshops and write a two-page reflective essay connecting what you learned to your current or future teaching.

—Teaching Well Using Technology

Earn as many badges as you choose. To achieve the certificate, earn one badge from each of four categories. All work may be completed independently, but some face-to-face options are also offered.

—Advanced Teaching ScholarAttend five additional teaching workshops and complete a significant teaching project with Kaneb staff or departmental faculty. Projects must be pre-approved and could include a teaching portfolio for the academic job market, implementation and analysis of new teaching strategies, or a course design.

LibraryThe Kaneb Center offers over 1,000 books, journals, manuscripts, and videos on topics including course design, classroom strategies, assessment design, student feedback, and academic career development. The entire collection is searchable through the University Libraries’ online catalogue.

ConsultationsGraduate students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to schedule a consultation to discuss course/syllabus design, teaching methods, Course Instructor Feedback (CIF) results, or any other aspect of teaching and learning. Arrange an appointment by contacting [email protected] or 574-631-9146.

Mentored Teaching Opportunities—Graduate Student Teaching Apprenticeship (Sci. & Eng.)This program supports graduate students in the Colleges of Science and Engineering in carrying out a mentored advanced teaching experience within their department. Teaching activities will be jointly determined by the faculty mentor and the apprentice and could include class observation, literature review, planned micro-teaching, etc. Students who complete this program are also eligible for the Advanced Teaching Scholar certificate.

—Arts & LettersThe Kaneb Center collaborates with some departments within the College of Arts and Letters to offer discipline-specific programming and teaching certificates. Please contact your DGS or the Kaneb Center for more information on these opportunities.

Summer Graduate Courses on University Teaching & Learning (GRED)These courses are in various fields and available to all graduate students. They are taught by experienced Notre Dame faculty representing a variety of disciplines. Additional information is available at registrar.nd.edu. Please contact your department for Graduate School funding information.
