DOCTORAL PROGRAM
The Chemistry Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston offers a comprehensive doctoral program dedicated to cultivating creative and conscientious scientists. The department offers educational opportunities in six doctoral tracks, with a special emphasis on interdisciplinary research. Students immerse themselves in research labs early in the program and tailor their academic plan in accordance with their research interests. The program prepares students for careers in industry, government, and academia.
Requirements for the PhD include: completion of 60 credits, a literature seminar presentation, completion of four written qualifying exams, an oral qualifying exam, a published dissertation, and a dissertation defense.
Student coursework entails six 4-credit courses. Two courses must be selected from a list of core courses. The remaining 36 credits are fulfilled through seminar and research credit enrollment.

MASTER’S PROGRAMS
BS/MS Degree
This dual degree is designed to take UMass Boston under-graduates to a master’s degree. Students who wish to apply for this program must do so at the beginning of junior year. It is possible to complete both BS and MS in five years if graduate courses are taken during senior year. To do this, students must accelerate their BS degree. Students who plan to enter this program should have a strong high school record, particularly in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and English. This schedule is possible only for students who declare their intention to enroll in the program early.
Requirements for the BS/MS and MS degrees include: com-pletion of 36 credits (six 4-credit courses, graduate seminar credits, and master’s thesis credits), a literature seminar presentation, a published thesis, and a thesis defense.
Master’s Degree
This flexible program is designed for recent graduates and those holding positions in the chemical industry, high schools, and community colleges who seek advancement through further professional training. For students who are intent upon continuing their studies in a doctoral research-oriented graduate program, the curriculum offers the opportunity for both extensive coursework and research.
To learn more about all graduate degree programs, visit www.umb.edu/academics/csm/chemistry/grad.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The department has resources to support a limited number of teaching assistants, awarded to the most qualified applicants. A full teaching assistantship provides a stipend, a full tuition waiver, as well as a waiver of the education operations fee. Other fees are not waived and are the responsibility of the student. Applicants who would like to be considered for a teaching assistantship should apply to the program as early as January for fall matriculation or early October for spring matriculation.
Students may also be appointed research assistantships and, for exceptional students, awarded fellowships.
Students may also apply for federal Financial Aid:www.umb.edu/admissions/financial_aid_scholarships.
