A.IntroductiontotheSociologyGraduateProgramThegraduateprograminSociologyatPurdueUniversityisdesignedtopreparestudentstobecomewell‐roundedresearchers,scholarsandteachers.Theprogramoffersstudentsawell‐balancedtheoryandmethodscorecurriculumandanindividualizedplanofstudydesignedtotrainstudentstoconductsociologicalresearchattheforefrontofthefield.Wealsoofferanumberofopportunitiesforgraduatestudentstobecomefirst‐rateclassroominstructors.Inadditiontothecorecurriculum,ourprogramoffersconcentratedtraininginsixfieldsofsociologicalspecialization:FamilyandGender;Health,Aging,andtheLifeCourse;LawandSociety;SociologyofReligion;SocialInequality;andSocialMovementsandPoliticalSociology.Thefirsttwoyearsoftheprogram,leadingtoanMSdegree,focusonthecorecurriculumandonefieldofresearchspecialization,andculminateineachstudentproducinganoriginalresearchproduct,theanalyticproject.FurtherstudytowardthePhDexposesstudentstootherareasofspecializationandemphasizesthedevelopmentofgreaterdepthofknowledgewithintheareathatwillbethesubjectofastudent’smajorresearchproduct,thedissertation.Studentsareencouragedtopublishandtoteachastheyworktowardthedoctorate.Asmallstudent‐facultyratioprovidesgraduatestudentswiththeopportunitytoworkcloselywithfacultymembersintheirresearch,teaching,andpublicationactivities.Thedepartmentsponsorstraveltoprofessionalmeetingsandacolloquiumseriesfeaturingoutstandingsociologists.TheGraduateCommitteeorganizesinformalprofessionalseminarsandmeetingstoassiststudentsindevelopingtheirplansforconductingresearchandteaching.Thedepartmentmaintainsup‐to‐datecomputerhardwareandsoftwaretoassisttheresearchprocess.MoststudentsinthePhDprogramteachtheirownclasses.PreparationforteachingisprovidedinpartthroughassistingfacultyintheclassroomduringtheMSprogramandtakingSOC610“SeminaronTeachingSociology”duringtheirsecondyearintheMSprogram.Inaddition,studentsareencouragedtotakeadvantageofgraduateteachingcertificatesofferedthroughPurdue’sCenterforInstructionalExcellence.
B.AdmissionRequirementsPurdueUniversityseeksgraduatestudentswithdiverseintellectualperspectivesandexperiences,andacceptsstudentswithoutregardtoage,race,gender,ethnicity,creed,nationalorigin,disabilities,orsexualpreference.ThefacultymembersoftheGraduateCommittee,selectedtorepresentthedepartment’sfacultyandinterests,makeadmissionandfunding(financialaward)recommendationstoPurdue’sGraduateSchool.TheGraduateCommitteeevaluateseachapplicantintermsofpotentialforsuccessasagraduatestudentinthisparticulardepartmentandpotentialforsuccessfulprofessionalworkinthefieldofSociology.1. GeneralRequirementsThereisageneralwrittenEnglishproficiencyrequirementforalldegree‐seekinggraduatestudentsinSociology.IncomingstudentsareexpectedtofulfilltheEnglishproficiencyrequirementbeforebeginningtheirgraduatestudiesatPurdue.StudentswhosenativelanguageisEnglishsatisfytherequirement(a)byearningagradeofBorbetterinanundergraduateEnglishComposition

course(oritsequivalent)priortograduateadmissionor(b)scoring600ontheoldGREscale,or160asperthenew(2011andafter)GREscorescale,orhigherontheverbalsectionoftheGRE.StudentswhosenativelanguageisnotEnglishsatisfythewrittenEnglishproficiencyrequirementifthey(a)havecompletedanEnglishproficiencytestwithvalidscoresor(b)600,or160asperthenew(2011andafter)GREscorescale,orhigherontheverbalsectionoftheGRE.TheSociologydepartmentrequiresvalidEnglishproficiencytestscoresfromallinternationalapplicantsapplyingtothegraduateprogram.ThedepartmentwillNOTwaivethisrequirementevenforapplicantswhohavereceivedabaccalaureate,graduate,orprofessionaldegreefromaU.S.institutionwithinthepast24months&inadditionthedepartmentMAYrequirethoseadmittedtotakePurdue’sOEPPtest.StudentsadmittedtotheMSprogrammusthavecompletedaBAorBSdegree.Itisstronglyrecommendedthatapplicantshavesuccessfullycompletedasociologicaltheorycourse,asocialstatisticscourseandaresearchmethodscourse.StudentsadmitteddirectlytothePhDprogrammusthavecompletedanMAorMSinSociology.Studentswithadvanceddegreesinrelatedfields(e.g.,familystudies,law,gerontology,socialwork,theology,orappliedSociology)maybeadmittedtotheMSprogram,butnotthePhDprogram.StudentsmaybegintheMSorPhDprogramonlyduringthefallsemester.Inadditiontotheelectronicapplicationanda$60fee,fouradditionaltypesofinformationarerequiredforanapplicationfile:Grades:Twocopiesoftranscriptsforallpreviousundergraduateandgraduateworkarerequired.Aminimum3.0(“B”)undergraduatecumulativeGPAisrequiredforadmission.AptitudeTestScores:GraduateRecordExamination(GRE)scoresarerequiredforallapplicants.TheTestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage(TOEFL)examisrequiredforinternationalnon‐nativespeakersofEnglishwithaminimumacceptablescoreof27onthespeakingsectionoftheexam.StudentsmayalsotaketheInternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem(IELTS)andarerequiredtoscoreaminimumof8onthisexam.Letters:Threelettersofrecommendationarerequired.Thelettersshouldbefrompersonswhocanassessyouracademicpotentialsuchasacollegeoruniversityprofessor.Pleasedonotincludelettersfromemployers,academiccounselors,orindividualsinthecommunity.PersonalStatement:Abriefstatementofscholarlyinterestsisrequired.Yourstatement,approximately300‐500wordslong,shouldindicateyourpurposeforundertakinggraduatestudyandprofessionalworkinSociology.Thestatementshouldalsoidentifythearea(s)ofconcentrationorspecializationthatattractyoutotheSociologyprogramatPurdue.WritingSample.Apaperormanuscript‐lengthwritingsampleshouldbeincluded.Donotsubmitfullthesesordissertations.Thewritingsampleshouldbethestudent’sownwork,notwritingthathasbeenpreparedincollaborationwithmentorsorcolleagues.2. AllrequiredtestscoresmustbetransmittedtoPurdueUniversitybyETSpriortotheapplicationdeadlineofDecember15th.TheinstitutioncodeforPurdueUniversityWestLafayetteis1631.BecauseETStransmissionmaytakeseveralweeks,applicantsshouldcontactETSassoonaspossibletorequestthattestscoresbereportedtoPurdueUniversity.GraduateRecordExamination(GRE)scoresarerequiredforallapplicants.TheTestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage(TOEFL)examisrequiredforinternationalnon‐nativespeakersofEnglish.Applicantsmustscore550orhigheronthepaper‐basedtestor77orhigherontheInternet‐basedtestinordertobeconsideredforadmission.Inaddition,applicantswhotaketheTOEFLiBTmustachievethefollowingminimumtestscores:reading,19;listening,14;speaking,27;andwriting,18.AsanalternativetotheTOEFLand/ortheTSE,applicantsmaysubmitInternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem(IELTS)scoresof8.0orhigher.FinancialSupport:Internationalstudentswillbeconsideredfordepartmentalfundingintheformofteachingassistantships,researchassistantshipsorfellowships.StudentsnotofferedfinancialsupportbythedepartmentmustprovidetothePurdueUniversityOfficeofInternationalStudentsandScholarsevidenceofsufficientfundsavailabletopaytuitionandlivingexpensesduringresidenceintheU.S.OralEnglishProficiency:PurdueUniversityrequiresthatanystudentwhosefirstlanguageisnotEnglishdemonstrateadequateoralEnglishproficiencybeforebeingassigneddutiesinvolvingdirectinstructionofstudents.ThisisdonebytakingPurdueUniversity’sOralEnglishProficiencyProgram(OEPP)SpeakingTest.InternationalstudentsofferedteachingassistantshipsatPurdueareexpectedtopasstheOEPPSpeakTestassoonaspossibleaftertheyarriveoncampus.ThedepartmentgraduatesecretarywillschedulewithOEPPdaysandtimesforinternationalstudentstositforthisexamandinformthemviaemailaswhenandwheretheyshouldreportfortheexam.Studentsmustreceiveascoreof50‐60tobecertifiedbyOEPP.IfthestudentisnotcertifiedtheymustenrollintheENGL620coursebeforetheywillbeallowedtoteachtheirowncourseinthedepartment.Purduewillacceptascoreof8ontheInternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem(IELTS)orascoreof27onthespeakingsectionoftheTOEFLiBTfororalEnglishcertification.

D.FinancialSupportandDepartmentalAwards
1. FinancialSupportTheSociologyprogramoffersfinancialsupportintheformofateachingassistantship(TA),aresearchassistantship(RA),orafellowshiponacompetitivebasistoqualifiedstudents.Financialsupportincludesamonthlystipend,withamountsdeterminedbytheCollegeofLiberalArtsortheGraduateSchool,andawaiveroftuition.Applicantstothegraduateprogramareautomaticallyconsideredfordepartmentalfunding.Noseparateapplicationoradditionalinformationisrequired.StudentsenteringtheMSprogramwithanofferoffundingaregenerallyguaranteedfundingforfiveyears:twoyearstocompletetheMSdegree,twoyearstocompletecourseworkandpreparationforthePhDpreliminaryexamination,andafifthyearoffundingtocompletethePhDdissertation.StudentsenteringthePhDprogramaregenerallyguaranteedfundingforthreeyears:twoyearsoffundingtocompletePhDcourseworkandpreparationforthePhDpreliminaryexamination,andathirdyearoffundingtocompletethePhDdissertation.
Fundingguaranteesareconditional:studentsmustremainingoodacademicstandingandmustmakesatisfactoryprogresstowardsdegreeobjectives(includingmaintainingacumulativeGPAof3.0orgreater)eachyearinordertoretainfunding.Students’progresstowarddegreegoalsischeckedattheendofthefallsemester,andafullreviewofallaspectsofstudents’academicprogressstudentsisconductedannuallybytheGraduateCommitteeneartheendofthespringsemester.StudentsmakingunsatisfactoryprogresswillbenotifiedinwritingbytheGraduateCommitteeattheendofthefallandspringsemesters.AnystudentwhoseGPAfallsbelow3.0attheendofthefallsemesterisnotmakingsatisfactoryprogressandwillbenotifiedthatsheorhehasbeenplacedonprobation;thestudentmustraisehisorhercumulativeGPAto3.0orhigherbytheendofthespringtermtoremainintheprogram.Further,receivingagradeof“F”inanycoursewillresultinterminationoffundingforthefollowingsemester.SeesectionE7“EvaluationofMSWork”,sectionF14“ASummaryofthePhDProgram”andsectionI“UnsatisfactoryProgress”formoreinformation.
StudentsarestronglyencouragedtoseekexternalfinancialsupportforthePhDdissertationresearch.StudentswhoaresupportedasTAsorRAsbythisdepartmentarerequiredtomaintainfull‐timeregistrationforeachfallorspringsemesterduringwhichtheyreceivedepartmentalsupport.StudentsonfellowshiparerequiredbytheGraduateSchooltomaintainfull‐timeregistrationforeachsemesteroffellowshipsupport.InformationregardingPurdueUniversityfellowshipsandexternalfundingsourcesisavailableontheGraduateSchoolwebsiteathttp://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/funding/.2. DepartmentalTeachingAssignmentsTheresponsibilitiesofgraduateTAsmayincludeanytaskrelatedtotheinstructionofstudents.Studentswhoassistfacultymembersmaybeassignedtogradepapersorexams,preparecourse

materialsandupdateinformationonBlackboard,holdofficehours,orsupervisearecitationsection.Studentswhoareassignedtoteachtheirowncourseassumeresponsibilityforalldutiesrelatedtotheinstructionofthatcourse.Generally,MSstudentsareassignedtoassistfacultymembers.PhDstudentswhowishtoteachmaybeassignedtoteachtheirowncourse.StudentsmustsuccessfullydefendtheAnalyticProjectpriortoservingasaninstructorofrecord(i.e.,teaching“theirowncourses”).StudentsarealsorequiredtocompleteSOC610“SeminaronTeachingSociology”beforeservingasaninstructorofrecord.TheSOC610requirementmaybewaivedbytheGraduateCommitteewhenastudenthastaughtastheinstructorofrecordatthecollegeoruniversitylevel.Studentsteachingtheirowncoursearerequiredbythedepartmenttoparticipateeachsemester(includingsummer)inPICES(PurdueInstructorCourseEvaluationService)teachingevaluationsadministeredbyPurdue’sCenterforInstructionalExcellence.3. DepartmentalAwardsAnannualcontestisheldwithinthedepartmentforthe“OutstandingGraduateStudentPaper,”andallstudentswhoteachtheirowncoursesmaybenominatedforthe“OutstandingGraduateTeacherAward.”Winnersareawarded$100.00prizesbythedepartment.ThesubmissiondatefortheOutstandingGraduateStudentPaperisannouncedinthespring.TheGraduateCommitteereviewsallthesubmittedpapersanddeterminesthewinner.PaperssubmittedshouldbepreparedaccordingtotheASRStyleGuide.Althoughthereisnopreferenceforanyparticulartheory,topic,orresearchmethod,theGraduateCommitteeexpectsthesubmittedpaperstoberevised,finaldrafts,moresuitableforsubmissiontoaprofessionaljournalthanacourseorseminar.Pleasenotethatnamesshouldnotbeincludedanywhereonthepaperssubmittedforconsideration.Thedepartment’sTeachingCommitteesolicitsnominationsfortheOutstandingGraduateTeacherAward.Generallytheawardismadetoamoreadvancedstudentwhohasindependentlytaughtoneormorecoursesinthedepartment.TheGraduateCommitteealsoadministerstheWalterHirshGraduateStudentDissertationAward.WalterHirschwasafacultymemberinSociologyatPurdueUniversityfrom1947untilhisretirementin1989.Theawardprovidesupto$1000.00tohelpwiththecostofdissertationresearch.AnyPhDcandidateinSociologyiseligibletoapply.
E.TheMasterofScienceDegreeinSociology1. MSCourseworkTheMSdegreeprogramisatwo‐yearprogramthatrequiresaminimumof38semesterhoursbeyondtheBA/BSdegree.Tworequiredtheorycoursesandthreerequiredmethodsandstatisticscoursesmustbecompleted.StudentsmustalsocompleteSOC591(ProseminarinSociology)inboththefallandspringoftheirfirstyearandSOC610(SeminaronTeachingSociology)inthespringoftheirsecondyear.Threeelectivecoursesandatotalof9credithoursofSOC695“AnalyticProjectinSociology”arerequired.ThefollowingscheduleshowsthesequenceofcourseworkandSOC695creditsfortheMSdegree.

SelectionoftheMajorProfessorandAdvisoryCommitteeAstudentworkingtowardtheMSdegreemustselectamajorprofessorandanadvisorycommitteebytheendofthefirstyearofthegraduateprogram.ThemajorprofessormustbeamemberoftheSociologyDepartment.StudentsrequestapprovaloftheirmajorprofessoronadepartmentformthatissignedbytheDirectorofGraduateStudies.AnMSadvisorycommitteemustincludeatleasttwofacultymembersinadditiontothemajorprofessor.Professorsfromoutsidethedepartmentwhoarequalifiedandwillingtoassiststudentsingraduatestudymayserveontheadvisorycommittee.RetiredfacultymembersandfacultymembersfromotheruniversitiesmaybeonthecommitteeifcertifiedbytheGraduateSchoolandiftheydonotmakeupamajorityofthemembers.TheGraduateSchoolapprovestheadvisorycommitteelistedontheMSplanofstudy.TheMajorProfessorAppointmentRequestformshouldbesignedbythestudentandthemajorprofessorandreturnedtoGraduateSecretaryfortheDirector’ssignature.3. TheMSPlanofStudyThemajorprofessor,theadvisorycommittee,andthegraduatestudentjointlydevelopandsubmitaplanofstudy(POS)fortheMSdegreetotheGraduateSchool.Aplanofstudyincludesaprimaryresearcharea,thespecificcoursesthestudentwillcompletetosatisfydegreerequirements,andexpecteddateofdegreecompletion.AnapprovedPOSconstitutesformaladmissiontocandidacyfortheMSdegree.StudentsmustsubmitthePOStotheGraduateSchoolforapprovalduringtheirthirdsemesterintheprogram.FailuretosubmitacompletePOSbeforetheendofthethirdsemesterintheMSprogrammayprecludegraduationinthefourthsemester.Thus,itisstrongly

4. TheMSAnalyticProjectTheanalyticprojectinSociologyisdesignedtogiveMSstudentsaresearchexperiencethatincludes:

Theexpectationisthattheanalyticprojectbecomparableinqualitytoamanuscriptpreparedforsubmissiontoanacademicjournalforpublication.Inadditiontopublishingtheirwork,studentsarestronglyencouragedtopresenttheirresearchatscholarlyconferences.Eachstudentselectsamajorprofessorbytheendofthefirstyearinresidence.Theanalyticprojectiscompletedoveratwo‐semesterperiodduringthesecondyearinresidence.Secondyearstudentsenrollin3credithoursofSOC695,theanalyticprojectcourse,forthefallsemester.Thestudentcompletesaproposalfortheresearchprojectbytheendofthethirdsemester.Themajorprofessor,thestudent,andthestudent’sadvisorycommitteemeetforanoraldefenseoftheproposalbytheendofthatsemester.Theadvisorycommitteesignsadepartmentalformshowingthatthecommitteemetanddiscussedtheprojectwiththestudent.Iftheprojectisnotapprovedbythestudent’sadvisorycommitteeatthefirstmeeting,aseconddateforanoraldefensemustbeset.Allanalyticprojectproposalsorabstractsmustbeapprovedinthismanner.Themajorprofessorgradesthe3‐creditSOC695analyticprojectproposal.OnlygradesofAorBareacceptable.5. I.UnsatisfactoryProgressAfullreviewofallstudents’academicprogressisconductedannuallybytheGraduateCommitteeneartheendofthespringsemester.StudentswhodonotmakesatisfactoryprogressthroughtheMSorPhDprogram,asdescribedinthismanual,aresubjecttohavingtheirfundingrevokedand/orbeingdroppedfromtheprogram.Thefollowingconditionsconstituteunsatisfactoryprogressinthegraduateprogram:
1.LowGPA:AstudentwhosecumulativeGPAfallsbelow3.0attheendofanyacademicyearwillbedroppedfromtheprogram.AstudentwhoseGPAfallsbelow3.0attheendofthefallsemesterisnotmakingsatisfactoryprogressandwillbenotifiedthatsheorhehasbeenplacedonprobation.Sheorhemayremainintheprogramandcontinuetobefundedbythedepartmentinthespringsemester;however,thestudentmustraisehisorhercumulativeGPAto3.0orhigherbytheendofthespringtermtoremainintheprogram.Further,receivingagradeof“F”inanycoursewillresultinterminationoffundingforthefollowingsession.StudentscompletingtheirMSdegreewithacumulativeGPAlowerthan3.25willnotbeadmittedtothePhDprogram.
