THE LESSONS seated

FIRST READING Wisdom 6:12-16

Reader A Reading from the book of Wisdom.Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her,and is found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty, for she will be found sitting at the gate. To fix one’s thought on her is perfect understanding, and one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, because she goes about seeking those worthy of her,and she graciously appears to them in their paths,

and meets them in every thought.

ReaderThe Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 53 Dixit insipiens

S 411

1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”*All are corrupt and commit abominable acts;there is none who does any good.

2 God looks down from heaven upon us all,*to see if there is any who is wise,if there is one who seeks after God.

3 Everyone has proved faithless;all alike have turned bad; *

there is none who does good; no, not one.4 Have they no knowledge, those evildoers *

who eat up my people like breadand do not call upon God?

5 See how greatly they tremble, such trembling as never was; *

for God has scattered the bones of the enemy;they are put to shame, because God has rejected them.

6 Oh, that Israel’s deliverance would come out of Zion! *when God restores the fortunes of his peopleJacob will rejoice and Israel will be glad.

SECOND READING Romans 5:1-11

Reader A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans.Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because

9

Page 10: Gradual - christchurcheureka.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewHoly and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become

God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

ReaderThe Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Bishop proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS S128 William Mathias

The people stand or kneel.

The Bishop continues

20

Page 21: Gradual - christchurcheureka.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewHoly and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:  Bishop and People together say

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

The Bishop continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Bishop then continues

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

About Christ Church Eureka

In November 1868, Anglican lumberman Thomas Walsh wrote to the Humboldt Times, saying that he proposed erecting “an Episcopal Church in Eureka called Christ Church” since he understood Christ to be the “Door to Heaven.” The next year, after William Carson deeded a lot to the vestry, the church was built in downtown Eureka on 4th and E Street. When the vestry asked Bishop William Ingraham Kip for a rector, he responded, “I would be happy to comply with your request if you would but tell me where Eureka is located.” Happily, the Rev. John Gierlow found his way to Eureka and

became the parish’s first rector, holding the first service on May 22, 1870. Bishop Kip then consecrated the new church on February 5, 1871. In 1938, because of an encroaching marsh and noisy trolley traffic, the church broke ground for a new building at its present location on 15th and H Streets. Over the years, the church has grown, thanks to the generosity of donors such as William Carson and William Smullin and the leadership of many beloved rectors such as the Rev.’s J. Thomas Lewis, John L. Thompson, and W. Douglas Thompson. This year, the church celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the dedication of the custom-designed Kegg organ and, of course, the arrival of our new rector, Father Daniel London. As we approach our 150th anniversary, we look forward to the many ways that we will continue to fulfill the 150-year-old vision for Christ Church to be an ever more welcoming and open “Door to Heaven.”

About St. Anselm of CanterburyAnselm lived in an age when ignorance and raw power often went hand in hand. His life was spent in opposing these enslaving forces, especially in England. He was born of noble Christian parents in Burgundy and educated at the monasteries at St. Leger and Bec in Normandy. He joined the latter community and, after an impressive career as teacher and author, became its abbot. He first visited England at the invitation of William the Conqueror, by whom he was well-loved.
