Language Central for Math addresses the needs of English language learners, the fastest growing student population in the U.S. Teachers from an ethnically diverse school district developed the curriculum. Dr. Jim Cummins framed the coherent and deliberate plan.

Dr. Jim CumminsDr. Cummins is a professor and research chair

at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education,

University of Toronto. His research focuses on

language and literacy development in multilingual

schools. Dr. Cummins helped identify a five-

principle framework for teaching content-area

subjects to English language learners.

Fitchburg Public Schools The Fitchburg Public School System received a

grant from the Massachusetts Department of

Elementary and Secondary Education to develop

a content-based ESL curriculum. Approximately

30% of its students come from homes where

a language other than English is spoken. Key

members of the school district helped create the

curriculum of Language Central for Math.

Inspired by a world-renowned ELL expert and a concerned school district.

The goal of the program is to directly address the academic vocabulary issues that prevent students from focusing on the math concepts being taught….We’ve seen that often it was the language, not the math, holding them back.

Language Central for Math helps English language learners and struggling students develop the academic vocabulary necessary to master math. Oftentimes it’s the math vocabulary, not the mathematical concepts, that hinder student mastery. Language Central for Math directly addresses this issue, supporting the core instruction in your math classroom.

The Pearson ELL Curriculum FrameworkDr. Jim Cummins and a team of ELL educators

identified five principles that support English

language learners. Language Central for Math

organizes instruction based on these principles.

How can teachers make complex academic English comprehensible for children still in the process of learning English? We can scaffold students’ learning by modifying the input itself.

Dr. Jim Cummins, Consulting AuthorUniversity of Toronto

Identify content and language objectives in each lesson/module.

Activate prior knowledge, build background, preview text, preteach vocabulary, and make connections.

Use multiple modes of instruction: visual, verbal, aural, and kinesthetic. Foster oral and written language development through pair and group work.

Assesss and spiral learning to build content knowledge and language expertise.

Language is central to learning math.
