In this lesson the teacher will read a story called “The Giving tree”. Next the class will discuss the needs of the boy in the story.After this play a game with the students where they classify needs and wants. When the game is over go over the answers with the students. Lastly have the children draw images of the needs and wants they learned in the lesson.

After the discussion have the students go around in a circle and share their items with the class. After this have every student place their items at their seat and have the class walk around looking at the objects and treating the need and want items with respect.

Have students recognize influential factors in why they are buying certain goods.(1.4.2)

In small groups have students discuss why they buy the things they buy. Next as a whole group create an anchor chart of why they buy different items. Also discuss whether some of the items are needs or wants.

Have students write in their journals about what they buy and why they buy them. Base the assessment on how well they understand the influence different ads have on them. Use a rubric to evaluate the entry.

Goods and Services

Students should be able to recognize different goods and services in their communities but they should also be able to give examples of goods and services outside their community.(1.4.3)

Have a large image of the world map on the wall in the classroom. Have images that are local, provincial, national, and international cut out. Next the teacher will hold up each image and ask the students where they think it belongs on the map and why they think it goes there. This will

Community Services

Students should understand that every community is different and what might be a service in their community is not a service in another community.(1.4.3)

Have a class discussion about how all communities are different. Have students go back to their seats and create their own make believe communities and that have to have at least 3 services talked about in class. After the drawings are complete have the students share their work with the class. While sharing point out how everyone put different services in their community.
