T his work was originally composed for full orchestra and chorus and included the entireCatholicliturgicaltextfromthe“Gloria”portionofthe“Ordinary”oftheMass.ThepiecewaspremieredbytheNewYorkPopsOrchestraandtheUniversityChristianChurchChancel

ChoirofFortWorth,TXduringDecemberof1990,underthecapablebatonofSkitchHenderson.

The setting contains multi-metric, dance-like rhythmic sections contrasted with passages ofsinging,romanticlyricism.Whiletonallytriadicinconceptanddesign,itcontainsmanychromatickeyshiftsandextensivecontrapuntalfigurescoupledwithmilddissonanceandangularrhythms.Thepiecefallsgenerallyintoathree-part“arch”form,althoughthereareintimationsoftherondostructureaswell�asthecompositionalmaterial issuccinct,repetitive,anddevelopsthroughoutinvariousways.

It ishoped that thewindbandversionof thispiece retains the spirit andpowerof theoriginalchoral-orchestral work and that, although the text will not be heard, the intent of the textualunderlay will be nonetheless sensed and experienced by listeners. This Gloria setting may beappropriately programmed in a variety of concert situations, but is particularly well-suited toinclusiononChristmasorholidayprograms,astheoriginalLatintextismostappropriatetothatsegmentoftheChristianchurchyear.
